SUMMARY:Stoa Nova: Should We Believe in a Stoic God? (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The ancient Stoics were pantheists\, they believed that the cosmos is a living organism endowed with reason\, which they called God. Some modern Stoics insist that if we abandon that sort of belief\, then the Stoic ethical system will irremediably suffer. In particular\, the Stoic notion of Providence will become untenable\, and with it the idea that we should not just endure\, but embrace our fate. What do you think? \nSuggested readings: https://thesideview.co/articles/the-stoic-god-is-untenable-in-the-light-of-modern-science/ \nhttps://thesideview.co/articles/again-modern-science-does-not-support-the-stoic-god-and-thats-okay/ \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Leader Emerita Anne Klaeysen: Pandemic Poetry (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In his poem\, “The Waste Land\,” T.S.Eliot called April “the cruelest month.” As a pandemic wreaks havoc upon our lives\, April this year indeed feels very cruel. But it is also National Poetry Month\, launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996 to remind the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture – and that poetry matters. More and more people are turning to poetry now because it can bring solace and strength. In the platform address\, Anne will share poems that she has found meaningful. \nNOTE: Due to the coronavirus epidemic\, in-person events at Ethical NYC have been suspended. This Sunday Platform will be presented online via Zoom. \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Discussion - Suppressed: The Fight to Vote (Online)
DESCRIPTION:As the November election approaches\, democracy faces twin threats: plots to suppress the vote and the coronavirus pandemic that’s being used as an excuse. \nWatch the new documentary Suppressed: The Fight to Vote for free online\, then join us for an online Zoom discussion to learn how you can help fight voter suppression from your home and in person. \nWe’ll be joined by activists Laura Hembree\, Brian Kramer\, Betsy Malcolm\, and Sandra Radoff. \nWatch Suppressed: The Fight to Vote below or at fighttovote.org. \nClick here to join the discussion at start time. Meeting ID 930-3548-6038 \n \nAbout Suppressed: The Fight to Vote: \nThis new documentary by Robert Greenwald (Director of Outfoxed\, Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price\, and Making A Killing: Guns\, Greed\, & the NRA) weaves together personal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeniable picture of voter suppression in the 2018 midterm election where Stacey Abrams fought to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. \nThe issues Georgians faced included polling place closures\, voter purges\, missing absentee ballots\, extreme wait times and a host of voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented many students and people of color from casting their ballots. Suppressed: The Fight to Vote features experts\, poll watchers and everyday Georgians speaking to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses in 2020. \nIn a race that was ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, the film exposes that the basic constitutional right to vote continues to be under siege in America. \nFor more information about all of Ethical NYC’s Zoom programming\, and instructions for how to use Zoom\, visit ethical.nyc/live.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Leader Curt Collier: Live As If The Universe Depended On It (Online)
DESCRIPTION:If your personal ethics didn’t challenge you today\, maybe you have the wrong ethic. Ethics has nothing to do with guilt\, or shame\, or a desire to be good\, or any other such nonsense forced on you to get you to stop hitting your sister when you were seven. Rather\, ethics is a process for creating a space for life to flourish\, a place that’s transformative\, sometimes chaotic\, and requires real maturity and a strong dose of humility. Entering this space is far more exciting than even your Sunday School teacher imagined. It beckons us all to join\, and may be the only way to save our planet from ourselves. \nCity Harvest Fundraiser – This week the Society is raising money for City Harvest\, who are working diligently to feed our hungry neighbors. For more information and to donate\, please visit https://ethical.nyc/donate/. \nCurt Collier has served as an Ethical Culture Leader in the environmental community for over 12 years. He is also the National Youth Program Director for Groundwork USA\, an organization which works to raise the capacity of communities to deal with their own environmental challenges.
