DESCRIPTION:I grew up in a village on the Erie Canal east of Rochester. Everyone was white. The first Black person I met was Terry\, who joined my third-grade class when his family worked on a local farm during harvest season. We became friends but he did not stay long. Migrant workers must follow the crops. A decade later\, I met a second Black person. Priscilla was my freshman roommate at SUNY Albany. We became friends\, too\, but grew apart after that first year. Now that I am much older\, and challenged by the work of anti-racism\, I wonder about them. How did they navigate the mostly white spaces where I met them? Did I fail them? How do I confront white supremacy\, in all its blatant and subtle forms\, today? \nDr. Anne Klaeysen is Leader Emerita of the New York Society for Ethical Culture\, Humanist Chaplain at New York University\, and Ethical Humanist Religious Life Adviser at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:In February 2018\, Renaldo Pearson gave a speech at the inaugural Unrig the System Summit in New Orleans\, where he outlined a new framework for the democracy movement that he calls “The 7 Deadly Sins of American Democracy.” His speech anchored the first day of the largest annual cross-partisan gathering of democracy reformers in the country. Global think tank and government corruption watchdog Transparency International has since credited his new framework for becoming “a touchstone for thousands of anti-corruption and pro-democracy activists around the country.” In his January 2021 NYSEC talk\, he will present this framework in the context of an anti-democracy decade that started with the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United and 2013 Shelby decisions — making his generation the first to witness America become less democratic — and culminated with the historic 2020 election\, as he invites the audience to explore whether we should now be conducting a postmortem for American democracy itself. \nRenaldo Pearson serves as Chief Diversity Officer & Director of External Affairs for RepresentUs\, the country’s largest grassroots anti-corruption campaign that builds cross-partisan coalitions to advance electoral reforms state-by-state to unrig the system. In 2018\, the movement celebrated more pro-democracy and anti-corruption wins at the local and state level than at any point in U.S. history. What do our shared values lead us to do now in order to cultivate a world in which we bring out the best in each other and ideas are allowed to flourish without threat of violence? Join us as Harriet Shugarman\, climate educator\, economist and author of the 2020 book\, How to Talk to Your Kids About Climate Change\, Turning Angst into Action\, shares her unique insights and some best practices for having these meaningful conversations. \nSelected as a 2020 New York City Climate Hero and a 2019 featured speaker at the Global Engagement Summit at United Nations Headquarters\, Harriet Shugarman is an influencer and connector in the climate movement. Harriet is the Executive Director of ClimateMama\, an on-line community that reaches individuals in over 110 countries and all 50 states. As a leader and mentor with The Climate Reality Project\, Harriet established the Climate Reality New York City Metro Chapter\, serving as its first chair. She was the recipient of the prestigious Climate Reality 2017 Green Ring Award and is also profiled in former US Vice President Al Gore’s 2017 book: “An Inconvenient Sequel\, Truth to Power.” Harriet’s writing and thought pieces on climate solutions appear in international\, national and regional publications on-line and in print. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly staged reading and discussion\, now online! This month’s play is American Son by Christopher Demos-Brown: \nIt’s 4 a.m.\, and a white man and Black woman wait in a Miami police station for news of their son. He’s been involved in a traffic stop\, but no one seems to know where he is or if he’s alive. As the morning wears on\, tensions rise\, revealing seemingly unbridgeable chasms between Black and white\, police and civilian. \nThe play will be performed by Erin Cherry\, Daniel Petzold\, Matt Golden\, and Jerome Preston Bates\, and is directed by Patricia Floyd and Eric Phillips. Following the play reading\, Betsy Ungar will lead an audience discussion of the ethical issues of the play.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "The Queen's Gambit and The Undoing of Social Stereotypes" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:“The Queen’s Gambit” is the most popular series that Netflix has ever produced — and deservedly so. It is a beautifully and meticulously crafted production and tells a most unusual and intriguing story. Based on a novel written in the 1980s\, it takes place in the 1950s and early 60s and tells the story of a girl who is orphaned\, deeply traumatized\, yet reveals herself to be a chess genius. The protagonist\, Beth Harmon\, is driven\, lonely\, and inscrutable\, yet fascinating. There is irony in a woman becoming a champion in a world populated exclusively by men. But “The Queen’s Gambit” is more than the story of a young woman. It surprises us by upending stereotyped assumptions we are accustomed to make about women\, men\, and the world in which there may be more goodness to be found than we often assume. I will speak about the social messages this marvelous series conveys\, that I found ironic\, uplifting\, indeed liberating. \nOf the very many addresses I have given\, I have based very few on specific books and never on a television series. This talk is an exception. If you haven’t seen “The Queen’s Gambit\,” I strongly recommend you do—but I warn you\, in this talk there will be many spoilers. \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. This coalition of religious and human rights organizations provides services for asylum seekers released from federal detention. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961\nFor full join information\, please also see this week’s Ethical Weekly email. \nPresider: Kathleen O’Connell \nShared Charity: Heifer International’s girls education program \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.
