SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Curt Collier: "The Emergence of Biocentric Ethical Culture" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:A unique outlier in many respects\, Ethical Culture has allied itself and been a home to many philosophical partners over the years\, including humanism\, free thought\, progressivism\, religious liberalism\, agnosticism\, atheism and so forth. Adherents to these belief systems have found a home because of Ethical Culture’s emphasis on deeds above creeds and its work towards many issues common to liberal and progressive agendas. Despite these similarities\, Ethical Culture is also radically different than these beliefs. Had Adler continued living into the present age\, how would he have applied the Ethical way of life to modern environmental and societal challenges? \nCurt Collier is the Interim Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, and has served as Leader of three other Societies during his nearly 20 years of service. Collier is also the National Youth Program Director for Groundwork USA\, an organization created by the National Park Service and the EPA to help raise the capacity of communities to deal with local environmental challenges. He has created a number of programs with federal partners and supporting agencies to create environmental job training\, resume building experiences\, and career pipelines for diverse youth of color in multiple states. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Sarah Sprott \nThis Week’s Charity: Rise & Root Farm \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Pathways to Ethical Culture: "Felix Adler’s Philosophical Challenge" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Adler was a philosopher with a moral mission facing an urgent problem that we continue to confront in the modern world: How do we ensure that the human being has inherent worth? How do we philosophically guarantee that human beings are not merely expendable when doing away with them will serve a compelling purpose? Adler believed that traditional religion did not effectively do this\, nor could science. Where did he turn to find the answer? This presentation will delve into his creative solution which inspires Ethical Culture to this day. \nThis series in an orientation to Ethical Culture directed at our newer members as well as veterans of our Society who want to deepen their knowledge of Ethical Culture. The interested public is invited as well. Each session will be a combination of a presentation and a discussion. \nFor more information and to receive recommended readings\, please contact Membership Coordinator Maggie Determann at mdetermann@nysec.org. \nAbout this series: \nEthical Culture is a humanist community that esteems ethics as its core precept\, human worth and dignity as its central value\, and community\, sustainability and freedom as its principal goals.  Where did Ethical Culture come from?  What does it say to us today regarding the human condition? What is its unique contribution for our lives and our future? \nJoin us for a five part program that explores the origins\, the history and the values of Ethical Culture – from its founding a century-and-a-half ago to the 21st Century.   The topics will be: \n\nThe social and intellectual roots of the Ethical Culture Movement.\nFelix Adler’s philosophical challenge – How to prove inherent worth of the human being in a harsh and precarious world when one abandons traditional reliance on God and the supernatural?\nEthical Culture’s rich social justice history in the age of reformation and the modern era.\nThe NY Society and Ethical Culture’s place in today’s world of modern humanism.\nLiving Ethical Culture – How it offers a life of meaning\, growth and authenticity. The Program is facilitated by the Society’s Leaders: Dr. Joseph Chuman and Dr. Richard Koral.   Meets monthly for one hour on the 3rd Wednesday of each month\, March through July at 2:00 p.m. on Zoom.\n\nClick here to join at start time | ID 814 7073 5630 | Passcode 158119\nFor complete join details\, please also see our daily event emails. \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. DESCRIPTION:As a Grower and Activist\, I know how important it is to be healthy and eat healthy. This virus has affected the most vulnerable population\, the poor and infirm. While we all wait for the vaccine\, having access to healthy food is important now than ever before. SUMMARY:Book Discussion: "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" By Isabel Wilkerson (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Caste points to our entire social structure as an unrecognized caste system. Wilkerson agrees that America is indeed racist. She says that we tend to refer to slavery as a “sad\, dark chapter” in America when in fact it lasted for hundreds of years—but\, in order to maintain a social order and an “economy whose bottom gear was torture\,” it was necessary to give Blacks the lowest possible status. Whites\, in turn\, got top status. In-between came the middle castes of Asians\, Latinos\, indigenous people\, and immigrants of African descent. Such a caste system allowed generations of whites to live under the same assumptions of inequality. \nPresented by the Ethical Action Committee. Join link will be provided via email.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "Felix Adler's Problem and Our Own" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Ethical Culture was born out of the ferment and problems of its time. \nThe catalyst for its creation were the evils wrought by the Industrial Revolution -workers without rights or protections laboring in factories\, growing poverty under the oppression of robber barons\, the exploitation of children in factories and devoid of education\, and a monstrous wealth gap. \nThe problem of that age was how to ensure that human beings counted for something. How could the humanity of women\, men and children be safeguarded? That remains our problem. Growing awareness of structural racism lays bare the reality that some lives count more than others. The pandemic has unmasked similar realities\, bringing to clarity the division between the privileged and unprivileged. “Essential workers” is arguably a euphemism for “expendable workers.” \nBut Adler\, intellectual that he was\, was also aware of philosophical challenges the modern age presented. Darwin had brilliantly shown how human beings have evolved from earlier forms of life\, devoid of a Creator who has endowed us with a soul. But by placing us in the seamless kingdom of nature\, Darwin deprived human beings of any special status that religion had provided; religion that Adler and fellow moderns could no longer believe in. \nAdler’s challenge was to rescue the dignity\, the worth the humanity of people\, from the maws of social oppression and soulless science that deprived men and women of what makes us human. Ethical Culture was the answer. \nIn my address\, I will explore further what lay behind Adler’s problem and how he creatively tried to resolve it. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nFor full join information\, please also see this week’s Ethical Weekly email. \nPresider: Maggie Determann \nShared Charity: Young Ethical Explorers’ AIDS Walk fundraiser \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
