SUMMARY:AEU All-Society Platform: "W.E.B. Du Bois: Will the Truth Set You Free?" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:On February 7\, 1949\, renowned scholar and civil rights activist Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois gave a speech (the written version unearthed by our own Carolyn Parker) at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. We will be listening to a reading of this historic address as Dr. Du Bois speaks about the importance of acknowledging the hardships that African Americans have faced as well as their contributions to this country’s success. \nThis historic address is consistent with the resolution passed at the 2017 AEU Assembly titled “Toward Repairing the Harm of Racism.” There\, the AEU stated its goal of addressing racial inequality by examining the effects that racial discrimination has had and continue to have on people of color. Dr. Du Bois’ address echoes this sentiment\, a timeless reminder that we cannot create a better future without looking into the past. This event will take place virtually on Zoom on Sunday\, January 30th\, at 11am Eastern Time with Dennis D. Parker reading Dr. Du Bois’ speech. We hope to see you there! \nWe are excited to have Dennis D. Parker of the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) do the verbal reenactment of Dr. Du Bois’ address. Prior to his work at the NCLEJ\, he fought for racial equality on behalf of other social justice-focused organizations like the ACLU and NAACP. Dennis has also published multiple pieces on civil rights including articles and books as well as teaching the subject as an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School/Teachers College and NYU Law School. \nSpecial thanks to the volunteer planners of the 1/30 All-Society Platform: Susan Solomon of the Ethical Society of Northern Westchester\, Carolyn Parker of the Ethical Society of Austin\, Taty Sena of the Brooklyn Society For Ethical Culture\, and Joanna Brandt of the Baltimore Ethical Society! \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nClick to Join at Start | Zoom ID 891 9333 5697 \nPresider: Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nShared Charity: Students for Justice \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Film Focus: "Parasite" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Film Focus at Ethical\, a new monthly series exploring ethical themes in classic and contemporary cinema. Watch the film on your own beforehand\, then join our guest presenter for an in-depth discussion. At this inaugural session\, Greg Berger will lead an examination of the award winning Korean film Parasite. \nParasite is currently available for streaming and/or rental on Hulu\, Apple Movies/iTunes\, YouTube\, Amazon\, Vudu\, Google Play\, and more. \nAbout this session \nFor over a century\, cinema has been an effective means to communicate pressing ethical and social dilemmas to mass audiences. Perhaps no contemporary film has been as effective at portraying social inequality as South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” (2019)\, winner of the 2020 Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. The film’s social message\, however\, extends far beyond its storyline. In Parasite\, Director Bong meticulously deploys visual metaphors within nearly every frame of his 132 minute film to characterize the dysfunctional relationship of the globe’s social classes. In images sometimes subtle and sometimes so transparent as to seem in-your-face\, Bong masterfully and beautifully communicates the toxic elements of global capitalism to his viewers. In this session\, we will review some of the political and cinematic traditions which have shaped the work of Bong Joon Ho\, and examine how he pointedly employs audiovisual language to drive home his social observations. \nDr. Gregory Berger is a filmmaker\, comedian\, Mexican television personality\, and Professor in the School of Humanities and Education at the Tecnológico de Monterrey\, Cuernavaca campus\, and a Research Fellow at the UAEM University in the Mexican State of Morelos. In Mexico he is known for his popular comedy journalism project “El Joe T. Hodo Show” which has been a fixture on social media since 2013. Since 2019 he has been a correspondent for the nationally broadcast comedy journalism television shows “El Almohadazo” and “Capital por Cual.” He has also produced comics for “El Chamuco\,” known as the “MAD Magazine of Mexico.” Berger’s academic research\, focusing on the intimate relationship between social movements and cinema\, has been published in numerous academic anthologies from Routledge Press and Peter Lang. His films have been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art and El Museo del Barrio in New York City\, and Los Angeles’ Getty Center among other venues. \nClick here to join at start time | Zoom ID 814 7073 5630 | Passcode 158119 \nIf you would like to lead a discussion\, please contact jrose@nysec.org

SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas In: Public Art with Rose DeSiano (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, sculptor\, and photographer Rose DeSiano joins us to explore the ethical dilemmas raised by works of public art. Public Art is a service to the community\, but questions arise from aspects of its planning\, placement\, purpose\, and relevance. \nWhat is its role as a method of activism\, bringing topics of social importance to the surface? How can the physical artwork become a conduit for community concerns? Who makes the decision on what art will be installed\, and do the decision-makers represent the local residents? Can it be used to fundraise for non-profit social service organizations? \nRose DeSiano brings together photography and sculpture into a public art practice. Her artwork examines cultural symbolism\, the collective consciousness\, and is interested in bringing to the surface lost or undiscussed topics of history. Using art in public spaces to foster community\, DeSiano sees public art as an act of advocacy and activism. \nCommissioned by multiple cities\, her photo-sculptures have appeared throughout New York City (most recently in Prospect Park)\, in San Diego\, and Cleveland\, and have received multiple awards\, including the Uniqlo Parks Grant and FLOW.17 Public Art Award. Her gallery artwork has been exhibited in solo shows in the US and Europe\, featured in several group museum exhibitions; Bronx Art Museum\, Allentown Museum of Art\, Heritage Museum of Málaga\, and has been included in international art fairs; Photoville\, FOTOFOCUS\, and Orange Changsha Photo\, China. She is also currently the 2021 Artist in Residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. \nHer work appears in numerous publications including; Hyperallergic\, Vogue\, Time Out\, ArtNews\, and UK’s Aesthetica. DeSiano has her MFA from Art Center\, LA\, her BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. She currently lives in NYC and is a Professor of Art at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Visit her online at desiano.com and on Instagram @rosedesiano. \nClick to join at start time | ID 868 4443 0081 | Passcode 600242 \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Boat by Nam Le\, Stories 1-4 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:With a jaw-dropping versatility of voice and point of view\, The Boat is an extraordinary work of fiction that guides us to the heart of what it means to be human. The seven stories take us across the globe\, from the slums of Colombia to Iowa City; from the streets of Tehran to a foundering vessel in the South China Sea. \nAmong many accolades this book won Australian author Nam Le the 2008 Dylan Thomas Prize\, the world’s top cash prize for young writers. Michiko Kakutani (New York Times) called the opening story “a singular masterpiece.” \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nOkay\, the original word was a little stronger during the Bill Clinton presidential campaign\, but it’s always about the economy! These two articles give insight into how our economy has been affected during the COVID-19 siege\, as well as how inflation (shocking\, not shocking) can disproportionately impact those with the least resources. \nThis week’s readings: \nWhat We Learned About the Economy in 2021 – The New York Times (nytimes.com)\nOpinion | The Missing Data in the Inflation Debate – The New York Times (nytimes.com) \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 861 1417 5760 | Passcode 347145 \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person. All others are invited to join us via Zoom. We hope to open up to the public again as soon as possible. \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. Zoom is available for tablets and smartphones in both main app stores\, Apple and Google Android. Attendees don’t need to register for a Zoom account although it’s free and helpful. To join a meeting\, simply click the event’s invitation link above.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: Second Verse\, Same as First (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nAs we enter year 3 of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it can seem as if we have gotten caught in a loop\, drearily repeating the same story over and over. On February 2\, Punxsutawney Phil\, the celebrity groundhog from the Pennsylvania town of the same name\, will have been enticed out of his den to read the future for 2022. Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow\, Dr. Rost will reflect on what to do when the pandemic seems unending\, when each day looks like the one before and you’re stuck in a rut. The 1993 movie “Groundhog Day” will be liberally referenced. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. SUMMARY:Colloquy: "Freedom of Speech in the Era of Cancel Culture" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Share your reflections on the topic based on quotes\, parables\, poems\, etc. presented by the moderator. There are no right or wrong answers\, just your individual response shared in a contemplative atmosphere. Matthew Benson hosts. \n***** \nToday’s subject is “Freedom of Speech in the Era of Cancel Culture”. The United States has always prided itself on freedom of speech. In other countries citizens can be arrested and incarcerated for speaking their minds about their country\, religion\, history\, events of the day and defying power structures just to list a few examples. \nWith the advent of the internet and all of its instantaneous\, forever recorded and documented capabilities\, everything that someone types in an email or says near a recording phone or videocamera can be captured\, stored and reposted for the purposes of condemning or out-and-out obliterating the reputation of an individual and “canceling” them. We see this with artists\, academics\, journalists\, organizational leaders and politicians constantly today. One tweet\, one post of outrage\, one biased article in a newspaper\, magazine or social media platform can instantly and virally pass judgment on an individual without any context or— outside of platforms with journalistic ethics that source and verify veracity—judgement can be passed dishonestly. \nIn high minded circles\, pre-internet\, “gossip” was considered to be tawdry\, dubious hearsay and not to be readily trusted. All of us have at some point experienced being on the wrong side of “gossip” that has resulted from misunderstandings or ill intentions of the gossip spreader. Our standing in a group would be shaken\, but people at least we had the opportunity to refute and quash inaccurate gossip before it spread too far. \nThe question we have before us today in our colloquy is is the current practice of cancelling individuals ethical? To what degree should it be tolerated in our media and our communities? We have all said foolish things in the past. All of us continue to evolve and change our views and would not wish to be judged today by something we said many months or years ago. Should individuals be suspended\, fired or otherwise ousted from a community because of something they mused aloud about in a country that protects freedom of speech? As Americans\, we have the freedom to speak our minds and offer our opinions about absolutely anything and it is good to bring crimes and dishonesty to light\, but at what point does cancel culture overreach? Are we in danger now of living in a society where no one freely speaks their mind\,and no one has the courage to stand up to unfair cancellations out of fear that they too may be canceled? \nThis is the subject of our colloquy today. \nI will play a brief interlude of music and allow us to contemplate how we feel about cancel culture. We will ruminate on when it goes too far and also reflect on any positive aspects to this new reality of cancel culture and what we hope the future of this social phenomenon to be. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 814 7073 5630 | Passcode 158119\n \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. In 2007 he won the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. \nRatner handled some of the most significant cases In American history. This book tells why and how he did it. \nHis last case\, which he worked on until he died\, was representing truth-telling whistleblower and now political prisoner Julian Assange\, the editor of WikiLeaks. \nRatner “moved the bar” by organizing some 600 lawyers to successfully defend habeas corpus\, that is\, the ancient right of someone accused of a crime to have a lawyer and to be brought before a judge. \nZachary Sklar\, edited “Moving the Bar” for OR Books\, and Michael Smith\, who wrote the book’s introduction. \nBuy the book here. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974.
