SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "'The Arc of the Moral Universe Is Long\, but It Bends Toward Justice.' Does It Really?" (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThis quote\, much beloved by Barack Obama\, was proclaimed by Martin Luther King. But it did not originate with King. It came from a speech given by the Unitarian minister\, Theodore Parker\, who was a firebrand of abolition in the years leading up to the Civil War. \nIt is an inspiring line to be sure. But how can humanists understand it? Is it a useful notion for us\, or does it bespeak a determinism in the course of events which humanists usually eschew? We are at a very dark moment in our nation’s history. Is this insight something we can hold on to? \nIn my address of June 19th\, I will investigate the history of the adage and whether it is worthy of our belief or promotes unwarranted optimism. \nAbout Leader Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. \nDuring his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. \nCurrently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nEthical NYC Food Drive: Please bring a can of protein–tuna\, chicken\, beans\, etc.–a jar of nut butter\, or box of pasta to Platform to support our Food Insecurity Initiative. Spices and cooking oils are requested as well\, as they are not covered by SNAP and the price of cooking oil has skyrocketed.  \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Kathleen O’Connell \nMonthly Collection: Destination Tomorrow \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

The ensemble educates\, entertains\, and empowers its audience and community through the dynamic vehicles of a cappella singing and American Sign Language interpretation for the Deaf and hard of hearing. Sweet Honey’s audience and community comes from diverse backgrounds and cultures throughout the United States and around the world\, and includes people of all ages\, economic/education/social backgrounds\, political persuasions\, religious affiliations\, sexual preferences and differing abilities. Visit them online at sweethoneyintherock.org. \nAbout Nona Hendryx \nIn the spirit of two fisted political singer songwriters such as\, Nina Simone\, and Joni Mitchell\, Nona Hendryx tackles social issues\, love and politics with a smoky vocal tessitura somewhere between funk and the end of the stratosphere. Hendryx’s legendary career spans six decades of sound and style evolution. Fans know her as a founding member of the girl group\, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles known as “the Sweethearts of the Apollo Theatre” and inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 1999. In the 70s\, the group morphed into the Rock & Funk Glam Diva’s ‘Labelle’ with the #1 record\, Lady Marmalade. Nona Hendryx emerged as the chief songwriter of the group’s socially conscious and illuminating message songs. If Labelle fans grieved the end of Labelle\, Nona Hendryx fans welcomed a new one as the revolutionary art-rock\, new-wave goddess embarked upon her own impressive Solo career\, which spanned eight studio albums and engaged her with an impressive lineup of collaborators\, resulting in top ten hits and a Grammy nomination. Visit her online at nonahendryx.com. \nAbout Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. \nHarlem Mothers S.A.V.E. has been a grassroots movement advocating for victims of gun violence and their families since 2006\, organizing marches\, town hall meetings\, forums\, and fighting for sensible and responsible gun laws. They partner with local\, city\, and state officials and agencies\, as well as other community leaders and organizations\, to provide victim services to families and individuals dealing with trauma from gun violence. Visit them online at harlemmotherssave.org. \nAbout The New York Society for Ethical Culture \nFounded in 1876\, The New York Society for Ethical Culture is a non-theistic\, Humanist community dedicated to ethical relationships\, social justice\, and environmental stewardship. A cornerstone of the Progressive movement and a longstanding home for activism in New York City\, the Society’s members put ethics in action to organize\, educate\, and build coalitions to end racism\, poverty\, and war; abolish the death penalty; welcome refugees and immigrants; fight climate change and pollution\, and more. SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas in the Law: The Experiences of Lawyers and Their Clients (Online)
DESCRIPTION:What does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Each month Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds—medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, and more—who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields. \nRetired lawyers Karen Raschke\, Ellen McBride\, Richard Koral and Joe Fashing present. \nJoin our lively discussion! Janet Rose facilitates. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Our Speakers \nEllen McBride \nEllen McBride’s legal background was as second career. McBride went to law school at 35 and practiced for 16 years mostly in corporate and textile arbitration with her father. They handled stockholder derivatives as well and one major client kept their two person firm busy. …Atari.. – Ellen McBride \nKaren Raschke \nKaren Raschke graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington\, DC in 1980 and spent the first half of her legal career as in-house counsel for several health care corporations\, both regional and national. As in-house counsel\, she advised the companies on compliance issues pertaining to the statutes and regulations governing the provision of health care. She spent the second half of her career working for the Federal government in the Medicare and Medicaid Programs\, developing and implementing regulations governing the health care corporations providing care under those programs. \nRaschke spent the last two years of her career at a little-known Federal agency named the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration\, part of the Department of Transportation\, where she worked for the agency Administrator implementing improvements to the regulatory compliance function. After retiring in 2014\, she moved to New York. \nRichard Koral \nBefore entering Ethical Culture Leadership\, Richard Koral was an AV rated lawyer (deemed as having the highest ethical standards and preeminent legal ability. Only lawyers with the highest ethical standards and professional ability receive a Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating of “AV.”). \nKoral worked for over three decades in commercial law and litigation and specializing in business bankruptcy reorganizations. He worked in firms both large and small in New York City. \nJoseph Fashing \n“My legal career was the result of what I describe as a colossal mid-life crisis. Having just received tenure at the College (SUNY Purchase) where I was teaching sociology\, I wondered if I really wanted to continue that work for a lifetime. Consequently\, when I returned from my first sabbatical I enrolled in Pace University’s Law School which was close enough to Purchase that I could literally attend classes between the classes for which I was responsible. As the organizer of our faculty union chapter and its president for many years \, my only two goals were to finish law school before my daughters graduated from college (I beat them by one year) and to sue the University when the opportunity presented itself. \n“Once admitted to the Bar I took a leave of absence for one year to see if I would be able to support myself as a lawyer. While I decided that I could\, I also rapidly rediscovered the virtues of academic life and the law has remained an avocation since. I’ve dabbled in labor law and related areas\, done some divorce and divorce mediation and handled some political asylum cases among other things. While I’m now retired from the academic world\, I continue to make occasional forays into the legal arena.” \n\nWhat does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds — medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, etc. — who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields. Monthly\, 3rd Monday.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Anne Klaeysen: Humanism on Campus (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nFor over twenty years\, I have served one or more university campuses in Humanist chaplaincies: assisting colleague Barbara Myerson at Columbia University; as chaplain at Adelphi University in Garden City\, NY; and returning to Columbia\, as well as adding New York University\, where we are called religious life advisers and spiritual life advisers\, respectively. Although the Pew Research Center (https://www.pewresearch.org/topic/religion/) reports a significant increase in religiously unaffiliated people aka “nones” and young people who identify as SBNR or “spiritual but not religious\,” there are only a handful of us serving their needs on campuses of higher education. This needs to change. I’ll share with you my experiences and hopes for the future. \nAbout Leader Anne Klaeysen \nDr. Anne Klaeysen retired as clergy leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture almost three years ago but continues to serve the campuses of Columbia University and New York University as chaplain. She also co-chairs The Encampment for Citizenship and serves on the board of Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools. She holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Hebrew Union College and Masters degrees in German from SUNY Albany and business administration from NYU. She is a member of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture where she was married and raised her two children. \nPresider: Leader Nori Rost \nMonthly Collection: Encampment for Citizenship \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.

SUMMARY:Film Focus: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Starring Sidney Poitier\, Kathryn Hepburn\, and Spencer Tracy\, with Hepburn’s niece\, Katharine Houghton\, this was one of the very few films of the time to depict interracial marriage in a positive light. When it premiered in 1967\, Variety reviewer A.D. Murphy wrote\, “Problem: how to tell an interracial love story in a literate\, non-sensational\, and balanced way. Solution: make it a drama with comedy.” You decide how much is drama\, how much comedy\, how much romance\, and how much is credible. \nWatch the film beforehand and then join our lively online discussion! SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Round House by Louise Erdrich (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. \nThis novel plays on a North Dakota Ojibwa reservation in the late 1980s and brings up conflicts of jurisdiction and sovereignty. A heinous crime has been committed against Geraldine on the rez. Her husband\, who is a judge\, and their 13-year-old son Joe have their own ways of dealing with the situation. The main focus of this book\, vibrant with woods\, lakeside beaches and legendary local characters\, is the coming-of-age of Joe. \nThe Boston Globe called it one of Erdrich’s very best novels: “concentrated\, suspenseful and morally profound.” \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Celia Fisher: Why Parents Resist COVID Vaccines for Their Children
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nTo date\, 38% of U.S. children ages 5 – 12 have received the COVID-19 vaccine. Our national survey of mothers in the U.S.\, found that reasons for and against vaccination include differences in beliefs about children’s susceptibility to and severity of the disease; trust or distrust in vaccines in general and in the effectiveness and safety of the COVID vaccine; whether vaccination has family and community support; confidence in FDA and physician recommendations; and personal values. Understanding parents’ pediatric vaccination decision-making has important implications for public health policies promoting children’s health during the current and future pandemics. \nThe barrage of conflicting scientific\, government\, and social media messaging regarding children’s susceptibility to COVID-19 and the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine has created significant challenges for parents deciding whether to vaccinate their children against the disease. \nAbout Dr. Celia Fisher \nCelia B. Fisher\, Ph.D. is the Fordham University Marie Ward Doty Endowed University Chair in Ethics\, founding Director of the Center for Ethics Education and Professor of Psychology. She also directs the HIV/Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Institute funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. With over 300 articles and books\, Dr. Fisher is internationally known for her contributions to research and practice promoting the rights and welfare of vulnerable children and adults from diverse communities. Her book\, Decoding the Ethics Code: A Practical Guide for Psychologist (Sage Publications) now in its 5th edition\, is required in professional psychology training programs across the U.S. Dr. Fisher has chaired and served on numerous government ethics oversight committees including for the Department of Health and Human Services\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, the National Institutes of Health\, the National Academy of Medicine\, and the NYS Board for Psychology. She has also chaired major revisions for the Ethics Codes of the American Psychological Association\, the American Public Health Association\, and the Society for Research in Child Development. Her awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Human Research Protections and the APA Award for Outstanding Contributions to Ethics Education. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time.
