SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion - 'Doña Bárbara' by Rómulo Gallegos
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Click here to view the upcoming schedule. \nThis week: \nDoña Bárbara tells the tale of an epic struggle between two cousins for a vast estate and ranch in the Venezuelan llano\, or prairie. Doña Bárbara\, a mysteriously and powerfully beautiful woman\, is consumed with hatred for all men. When her cousin Santos Luzardo\, bred on the plains but educated in the city\, returns to reclaim his land and cattle\, their battle becomes one of violence\, magic\, and seduction. Rómulo Gallegos’s vivid prose brings the world of Doña Bárbara to life\, and blends fantasy\, adventure\, and romance. \nPublished in 1929 and all but forgotten by anglophone readers\, Doña Bárbara is one of the first examples of magical realism\, laying the groundwork for later authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Derek Tesser: Perspectives of the Chocó Rainforest from Space to the Understory
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThe most biodiverse and threatened tropical rainforest in South America is not the Amazon. While less renowned\, the Chocó Biodiversity Hotspot along the Pacific Coast of Ecuador and Colombia lost 98% of its primary forest due to industrial oil palm expansion and illegal logging in the last few decades. \nYet hope is not lost. A complex history weaves together diverse cultures throughout the Chocó. Today\, local communities alongside conservation efforts promote sustainable cultivation of the Chocó. \nWith a combined focus on biodiversity\, music and culture\, the Itapoa Project has advanced scientific understanding alongside amplifying the voices of local communities within this unique and delicate ecoregion. \nDerek Tesser is a Lecturer of Science at CUNY’s Guttman Community College since the college opened in 2012. Derek’s background is in history\, biology and environmental science\, and he holds degrees from New York University and Brandeis University. \nDerek has led multiple study abroad expeditions with NYC community college students to the Chocó rainforest in Ecuador. These trips explore the Chocó’s rich biodiversity and investigate anthropogenic causes of deforestation and land use change. Derek also works with the Itapoa Project to cultivate sustainable cacao farms for local chocolate production in the Chocó. \nDerek is completing a PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center with a focus on satellite imagery techniques to study tropical ecosystems and biodiversity. Derek is currently involved with the development of a NASA campaign to investigate mangrove ecosystems in the Chocó. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nMonthly Collection: New York Harm Reduction Educators \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Good Neighbor Initiative Back to School Supply Drive
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Amsterdam Houses Community Room at 218 W 64th Street on Saturday\, August 27 from 12:00-3:00pm for our Good Neighbor Initiative Back to School Supply Drive\, sponsored by Ethical NYC\, the Social Justice Network\, and the National Action Network Second Chance Committee. \nWe’re collecting backpacks and school supplies for K-12 children at NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses. Please bring whatever you can! \nThe Society’s Ethical Action Committee and Social Service Board have mobilized to help our Upper West Side neighbors by partnering with the Resident Association at NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses\, collecting donations of food and other household necessities that we drop off each month. Now\, we’re proud to add school supplies to the list! \nFor questions\, please contact Social Service Board Community Outreach Coordinator Marlene Williamson at mwilliamson@socialserviceboard.org.
