SUMMARY:Reclaim Our Vote Postcard Writing w/ Third Act NYC: Help Georgians Fight Voter Suppression
DESCRIPTION:Join Ethical NYC’s Ethical Action Committee and our friends at Third Act NYC on August 31 for an in-person postcard writing gathering. Postcard packets will also be available to take with you and complete at home if you prefer. \nReclaim Our Vote is back for the 2022 mid-term elections. So far\, our volunteers have blanketed Texas\, North Carolina\, Alabama\, South Carolina\, and Florida with postcards to help voters–especially minority voters–learn about\, and then beat\, voter suppression in their states. \nNext up: Georgia. \nPostcards from this event will be mailed to Georgia voters by early October\, ensuring they arrive before the midterm elections. \nPlease RSVP by August 26th to rov.nysec@gmail.com if you plan to attend. \nFighting voter suppression is more challenging than ever\, and directly engaging voters is absolutely crucial to protecting and expanding our democracy. Thank you for whatever help you can give! \nFor more information\, please read the guidelines for postcard writers\, and watch this short ROV training video:

SUMMARY:Mary Anne Trasciatti: 'With Justice for All: Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nFrom New York to California\, from Italy to Bangladesh\, people remember the 146 workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in Greenwich Village in 1911. Mary Anne Trasciatti\, co-editor (with Edvige Giunta) of Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire\, reflects on various ways the Triangle story continues to inspire activists\, artists\, writers\, teachers\, and scholars in the U.S. and internationally to stand together and fight for a better world. \n“If there is injustice\, someone can always stand up and speak up. If there is someone\, then why not you?” – Kalpona Akter\, founder and executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity\, quoting her mother. \nMary Anne Trasciatti\, Ph.D. is Professor of Rhetoric and Director of Labor Studies at Hofstra University\, President of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition\, and co-editor (with Edvige Giunta) of Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire (New Village Press\, 2022). For over a decade\, she has been leading the project to build a permanent memorial to honor the 146 mostly Italian and Jewish immigrant women and girls who died in the 1911 Triangle fire. Scheduled for dedication in 2023\, the Triangle Fire Memorial will be the first labor memorial and one of only a small number of memorials to women in New York City. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. SUMMARY:Colloquy: Attachment Styles in Adult Relationships (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Share your reflections on the topic based on quotes\, parables\, poems\, etc. presented by the moderator. There are no right or wrong answers\, just your individual response shared in a contemplative atmosphere. \nA colloquy led by Matthew Benson \nAs the authoritative modern text on the subject\, “Attached: the New Science of Adult Attachment” by Amir Levine\, M.D. and Rachel S.F. Heller M.A. presents\, based on the research of psychologist Mary Ainsworth and psychiatrist John Bowlby in the 1950s\, our adult attachment style is developed in early childhood in response to our relationships with our earliest caregivers and evolves depending on our past trauma\, self awareness and life experiences. Approximately 50% of people have a secure attachment style and the other half have either an anxious\, dismissive avoidant\, or fearful avoidant attachment style. \nThis Mind Body Green article explains the four adult attachment styles: \nhttps://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/attachment-theory-and-the-4-attachment-styles \nOur colloquy discussion will explore these four adult attachment styles and how we can come to recognize our individual adult attachment style and do the personal work to emotionally heal\, evolve\, and develop a more secure attachment style for the most enriching and lasting relationships with our loved ones and friends in life. \nUnderstanding these attachment styles is also fascinatingly enlightening\, as they can help us understand why our partners and friends in life treat us the way they do\, and recognize that the kind or hurtful ways they treat us may not entirely be there fault\, but merely reflective of the attachment style they developed\, based on how they were treated by their caregivers in early childhood. Ideally we can all discover our own attachment style and do the personal work necessary to cultivate a more secure adult attachment style for ourselves and our loved ones and friends in life. \nit is not required\, but it is encouraged that you take the free 5-minute attachment style quiz below at Minds Body Green before joining the colloquy. There will be time to do this quiz online in the colloquy as well and\, once we have determined our attachment style\, we can discuss how our and different attachment styles affect ourselves and others in our relationships. \nClick on this link below to take the free 5 minute quiz to determine what your adult attachment style is: \nhttps://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/attachment-style-quiz \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527 \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. SUMMARY:Nori Rost: One More Light
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nEach year on September 10th is World Suicide Awareness Day. The statistics are staggering: every 40 seconds\, someone completes suicide. For each person who dies by suicide\, there are at least 40 more attempts. Many of us have been touched by this tragic event in our own lives. In this platform cantata\, Dr. Rost will explore the many reasons that can lead people to attempt (and in many cases\, complete) suicide and how we can help ourselves and others find a way through the shadows. \nPrior to joining the New York Society for Ethical Culture as its newest Leader\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. SUMMARY:Introductory Session: 'The Fire Next Time: Creating Brave Spaces'
DESCRIPTION:Join the New York Society for Ethical Culture for The Fire Next Time: Creating Brave Spaces\, a free seven-Saturday course taught by NYU adjunct lecturer and Social Justice Network Founder Terrence Coffie. This course will take a deep and thoughtful dive into James Baldwin’s 1963 book\, The Fire Next Time: \nA national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963\, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. \nAt once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice\, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two “letters\,” written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation\, that exhort Americans\, both black and white\, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. \nDescribed by The New York Times Book Review as ‘sermon\, ultimatum\, confession\, deposition\, testament\, and chronicle…all presented in searing\, brilliant prose\,’ The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of our literature. -Vintage \nTerrence L. Coffie\, MSW is a public speaker\, reentry consultant\, and a criminal justice reform advocate. He is an adjunct Lecturer at New York University and the Founder of Social Justice Network. Wade\, the world is watching. \nOn Wednesday\, September 14 at 6:30pm\, join leaders from the Center for Reproductive Rights\, the Guttmacher Institute\, and MSI Reproductive Choices for a conversation on the global state of reproductive rights in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision\, moderated by Flora Peir\, News Editor at The 19th. Hosted by the New York Society for Ethical Culture\, this conversation is the first in their Global Citizens series and will be followed by a Q&A session. \nRegression on abortion rights in the United States threatens access to critical sexual and reproductive health services for many of the most marginalized communities in the world – and it emboldens global opposition movements\, which often draw funding and strategy from their U.S. counterparts. \nThis timely dialogue invites all global citizens committed to sexual and reproductive health and rights to consider the far-reaching ramifications of regressive U.S. policies – and to imagine how we can unite to advance these rights around the world as we share stories of resilience and hope from the front lines. \nFREE – Click here to RSVP on Eventbrite! \nPanelists/Co-Organizers\, Moderator\, and Host \n\nRebecca Brown\, Senior Director of Global Advocacy at the Center for Reproductive Rights\n\n\nHeather D. Boonstra\, Vice President for Public Policy at the Guttmacher Institute\n\n\nDr. Carole Sekimpi\, Senior Country Director at MSI Reproductive Choices\n\n\nFlora Peir\, Moderator\, News Editor at The 19th\n\n\nDr. Nori Rost\, Host\, Resident Acting Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture\n\nThis event is co-organized by the Center for Reproductive Rights\, the Guttmacher Institute\, MSI United States\, and the New York Society for Ethical Culture.

SUMMARY:Speaking of Science with Eve M. Valera\, Ph.D.: 'Intimate Partner Violence and Traumatic Brain Injury' and 'The Brain and Adult ADHD'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly series exploring current discoveries and debates in science. This month’s topic: Intimate Partner Violence Related Traumatic Brain Injury: \nThe Valera Lab uses MRI in conjunction with measures of cognitive functioning to assess the effects of physical abuse resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) in women sustaining intimate partner-violence (IPV). In our current work\, we are using a range of methodologies including neuroimaging\, neuropsychological assessment\, and interviews to characterize women’s partner-related TBI history and its relationship to neural\, cognitive\, and psychological functioning. \nDr. Eve M. Valera is currently Director of the Valera Lab\, an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School\, and a Research Scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital. She has been working in the field of domestic violence for over 25 years. Her current work uses a range of methodologies to understand the neural\, neuropsychological and psychological consequences of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) resulting from intimate partner-violence (IPV). Dr. Valera also spent a significant portion of her career working to understand the neurobiology of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and in particular\, the role of the cerebellum in this disorder.  She frequently lectures on these topics locally\, nationally and internationally and spends much of her time training stakeholders and raising awareness of partner violence related brain injuries. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above.
