SUMMARY:Douglas Rushkoff: 'Leaving Us Behind: The Silicon Valley Mindset'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nJoin us Sunday as Leader Dr. Joe Chuman sits down with author\, professor\, and documentarian Douglas Rushkoff to discuss his latest book\, Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires: \nFive billionaires summoned Douglas Rushkoff to a desert resort for a private talk. The topic? How to survive The Event: the societal catastrophe they know is coming. Rushkoff came to understand that these men were under the influence of The Mindset: a Silicon Valley-style certainty that they can break the laws of physics\, economics\, and morality to escape a disaster of their own making—with enough money and the right technology. \nRushkoff will share how we can transcend the landscape the Mindset created—a world alive with algorithms and intelligences actively rewarding our most selfish tendencies—and rediscover community\, mutual aid\, and human interdependency. Instead of changing the people\, we can change the program. \nRushkoff will also be signing his new book\, Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires\, immediately following the program. \nDouglas Rushkoff is rofessor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at Queens/CUNY\, and an author and documentarian who studies human autonomy in a digital age. Named one of the world’s ten most influential intellectuals by MIT\, his twenty books include the upcoming Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires\, as well as the recent Team Human\, based on his podcast\, and the bestsellers Present Shock\, Throwing Rocks and the Google Bus\, Program or Be Programmed\, Life Inc\, and Media Virus. He also made the PBS Frontline documentaries Generation Like\, The Persuaders\, and Merchants of Cool. His book Coercion won the Marshall McLuhan Award\, and the Media Ecology Association honored him with the first Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity. He writes a weekly column on Medium\, and lives with his family in Hastings-on-Hudson\, New York. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nMonthly Collection: My Own Book Fund \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: The Sky is Falling
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThis month marks the 10th anniversary of the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown\, CT. During that rampage the 20 year old gunman shot and killed 26 people\, including 20 children between 6-7 years old. In June\, 2015\, Daily Mail journalist\, Dan Hodges\, tweeted\, “In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US Gun Control Debate. Once  America decided killing children was bearable\, it was over.” As we mark this somber occasion\, it appears his comments are true. But we cannot let this conversation be over. Dr. Rost will explores what does our Ethical Culture commitment call us to do to end gun violence in our communities? How can we ensure we’ve done all we can to keep our families safe while honoring the second amendment of our Constitution? \n“I believe that the tragedy started with an angry thought in Adam Lanza’s head. And an angry thought can be changed. So\, I asked everyone to start changing one angry thought into a loving thought every day. I said\, ‘By doing that\, you will positively impact yourself\, those around you and through the ripple effect\, you will make this a more peaceful and loving world.” -Scarlett Lewis\, mother of 6 year old Sandy Hook victim\, Jesse \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nDr. Nori Rost is the acting Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. SUMMARY:Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper: Spelling XthiQ-All with Everyone
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nIn a time where congregational life is in decline and words such as\, community or belonging can feel spoken in vain. How must we speak and live-out the values of Ethical Culture in such a way\, that the sound of it elicits the unthinkable and yet\, meaningful. This platform is an exploration  of love and logic used within language and changing culture.  Believing that Ethic is Everyone\, I invite you to come spell out its meaning\, sound it out with dignity\, and emphasize its vision.  Maybe Ethical Culture rest in the intelligibility action not just the spelling of it names. \nRev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper\, Ph.D. (they/them) is an artist and Cultural Humanist. Both as performer and clergy at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis and within the Ethical Cultural Movement\, their practice utilizes the body as preaching\, decolonial Humanism\, and Black Embodied-Intellectual Thought. Jé’s love for community-building involves the aesthetic ability within the envelopment of Black folk-talk– one of imagination as meaning-making. Their word-working emphasizes human freedom and interconnectedness through embodiment\, intuition\, creativity\, and improvisation. Their most recent production Keep Liv’n expresses the importance of cultural care and self-care. Also\, they are the clerical consultant at the Susquehanna Valley Ethical Society (the Valley) in Central PA. Jé as an artist has directed and created a film entitled\, Humanitas: A Conscious Coloring of Kindness\, along with other cultural programs that inform and inspire the human spirit. Exemplifying a commitment to equity and inclusion through the arts and congregational life\, Jé enjoys working closely together to decenter the stage and share the spotlight of all those voices that make up beloved community. These kinds of transdisciplinary approaches console and agitate communities in re-imagining and re-claiming narratives that honor the inherited worth and dignity within all people– a love-work that Jé is committed to! \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time.
