SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Nori Rost: Ready\, Set\, Wait
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nLast month\, Dr. Rost talked about the importance of setting intentions to create a different reality for ourselves. She reminded us that if we keep breathing for the next 365 days\, we will produce results. Will they be by default or design is the question. She gave us three first steps in setting our intentions\, so we create a year by design. \nIn this platform\, she’ll talk about one of the next steps which is determining if your dream is worthy of you! If you’re going to put your heart and passion into designing a life you love\, there are five questions you should ask first to determine if your dream is a worthy one. Join us as she shares those questions with us today. \nIf you missed last month’s platform you can watch it here. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Nori Rost\nLeader Dr. Nori Rost is the newest Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action with Dana R. Fisher\, Steven Donziger\, Sage Lenier\, and Saad Amer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for author Dana R. Fisher in conversation with Steven Donziger about her new book Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action\, followed by a discussion with youth climate activists Saad Amer and Sage Lenier. \nRSVP\nFREE for Students and Society Members – $10 Public\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Saving Ourselves\nSaving Ourselves takes a hard look at the growing frequency and severity of climate shocks and makes the case for increased climate activism as the driver of meaningful climate action. \nSaving Ourselves assesses the current state of climate inaction and provides a realistic path forward through the worsening climate crisis. It integrates Fisher’s decades studying climate politics and climate activism\, including her contributions to the most recent report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, to understand how change is coming and what to expect when it finally arrives. \nThe book concentrates on the social actors expected to bring about meaningful climate action—the state\, the business sector\, and civil society—showing how each sector has been ineffective. As a result\, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines this growing civil disobedience to identify when and how activism is most successful. The book concludes with insights on how people can take power back from deeply entrenched interests\, giving us all our best chance to Save Ourselves. \nAbout Dana R. Fisher\nDana R. Fisher\, PhD. is the Director of the Center for Environment\, Community\, & Equity (CECE) and a Professor in the School of International Service at American University. She has authored over seventy-five research papers and book chapters. Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action is her seventh book. Fisher is a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Governance Studies program at The Brookings Institution\, the President of the Eastern Sociological Society\, and the chair-elect of the Political Sociology section of the American Sociological Association. She served as a Contributing Author for Working Group 3 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Review (IPCC AR6) writing about citizen engagement and civic activism. Her media appearances include ABC\, CNN\, MSNBC\, PBS Newshour\, and various programs on NPR\, BBC\, and CBC. Her words have appeared in the popular media\, including in the Washington Post\, Slate\, TIME Magazine\, Politico\, the Nation\, and the American Prospect. Fisher holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science degree from the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her undergraduate degree is in East Asian Studies and Environmental Studies from Princeton University. \nAbout Steven Donziger\nAfter helping Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted Steven Donziger for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. The judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. \nThe private Chevron prosecutor immediately ordered Steven locked up at home with a 24/7 monitoring device on his ankle\, while his trial was delayed for over two years. He ended up spending 993 days in detention and in prison for a misdemeanor offense with a maximum sentence of 180 days; the judge denied him a jury. \nHe is still the only person ever in the US locked up in retaliation for his human rights work. Chevron used 60 law firms and 2\,000 lawyers to attack Steven. He now enjoys the support of 68 Nobel Laureates and more than 150 bar associations and civil society groups around the world and is considered a leading global spokesperson on the issues of human rights\, climate justice\, Indigenous rights\, and the law. \nAbout Sage Lenier\nSage Lenier is an activist fighting for an education system that properly prepares Gen Z for a climate-changed future. Recently\, she has been honored by TIME Magazine as one of ten 2023 Next Generation Leaders and wrapped up a Public Voices Fellowship with The Op-Ed Project & The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC). \nAt 19-years-old\, she began teaching her record-breaking program\, Solutions for a Sustainable & Just Future\, which has enrolled 1\,800 students and counting at UC Berkeley. In 2023\, Sustainable & Just Future is now a nonprofit rapidly expanding to bring the vision to a global audience. \nSage’s work covers the circular economy\, decarbonization\, degrowth\, community power\, food systems\, sustainable development\, environmental justice\, and more\, seeking to offer a vision for what a better future could look like. \nHer work has been featured in The New York Times\, The World Economic Forum\, and Teen Vogue and has brought her to speak at conferences\, universities\, and organizations around the world. \nAbout Saad Amer\nSaad Amer is a leading climate activist and environmental justice expert. He is the Founder of the consultancy\, Justice Environment\, and is a consultant to the United Nations. As one of the country’s most prolific voting rights organizers\, he has reached millions of voters and created campaigns featuring the likes of Vice President Al Gore\, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Taylor Swift. He served as an Expert Reviewer for the IPCC AR6 report and helped secure $6.5 billion dollars for the National Parks as Advisor to the National Parks Conservation Association. He has researched the impacts of climate change on the ground in the Indian Himalayas\, co-created Harvard University’s inaugural Sustainability Plan\, and discovered a new hybrid species in French Polynesia. Saad has written for National Geographic\, PBS and the World Bank\, has spoken at the United Nations\, US Department of State and TEDx\, and has been profiled by Vogue\, Nature and the New York Times. He went to Harvard University where he studied Environmental Science and Public Policy and was a Fellow at Yale University’s Public Voices on the Climate Crisis with The OpEd Project. He was named most influential voice in ESG by WWD and honored as Forbes 30 under 30 for social impact.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Eric Klinenberg: '2020: One City\, Seven People and the Year Everything Changed'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public! \nNOTICE: Due to extenuating circumstances\, this Sunday Platform will be IN-PERSON ONLY. \n2020 will go down alongside 1914\, 1929\, and 1968 as one of the most consequential years in history. Eric Klinenberg’s new book is the first attempt to capture the full human experience of that fateful time. At the heart of 2020 are seven vivid profiles of ordinary New Yorkers—including an elementary school principal\, a bar manager\, a subway custodian\, and a local political aide—whose experiences illuminate how Americans\, and people across the globe\, reckoned with 2020. Through these poignant stories\, we revisit our own moments of hope and fear\, the profound tragedies and losses in our communities\, the mutual aid networks that brought us together\, and the social movements that hinted at the possibilities of a better world. \nEric Klinenberg vividly captures these stories\, casting them against the backdrop of a high-stakes presidential election\, a surge of misinformation\, rising distrust\, and raging protests. We move from the epicenter in New York City to Washington and London\, where political leaders made the crisis so much more lethal than it had to be. We bear witness to epidemiological battles in Wuhan and Beijing\, along with the initiatives of scientists\, citizens\, and policy makers in Australia\, Japan\, and Taiwan\, who worked together to save lives. Klinenberg allows us to see 2020—and\, ultimately\, ourselves—with unprecedented clarity and empathy. His book not only helps us reckon with what we lived through\, but also with the challenges we face before the next crisis arrives. \nAbout Eric Klinenberg\nEric Klinenberg is the Helen Gould Shepard Professor in the Social Sciences and director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University. He is the coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Modern Romance and author of Palaces for the People\, Going Solo\, Heat Wave\, and Fighting for Air. He has contributed to The New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, Wired\, and This American Life. He lives in New York City. \nVisit him online at ericklinenberg.com. \nMonthly Collection\nNAACP \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.
