SUMMARY:Fortune Society Fundraiser - Theater: David Rothenberg’s THE CASTLE
DESCRIPTION:All ticket sales benefit The Fortune Society! \nJoin us for a special performance of David Rothenberg’s play The Castle featuring a cast of four formerly incarcerated New Yorkers–with 70 years behind bars between them–telling their stories of adversity\, incarceration\, freedom\, and redemption. It’s a breathtaking drama you will never forget. \nConceived and directed by David Rothenberg \nWritten in collaboration with and performed by: \nVilma Ortiz Donovan • Philip Hall • Ervin Hunt • Casimiro Torres \nDavid is a longtime friend of the Society\, having participated in The Encampment for Citizenship in his youth. The Encampment\, which brings together students “to develop critical thinking skills\, activism skills\, leadership qualities and the courage to work for social justice\,” was founded by Society Leader Dr. Algernon D. Black and civic leader Alice K. Pollitzer in 1946. \nAcclaim for THE CASTLE\n“Staggering…The theatre is a fitting place for these tales about broken lives…this effective production proves that there is hope for redemption.” -Diane Snyder\, TimeOut \n“This show has a soul-tearing bite to it…the four performers are profoundly eloquent and their unpretentious self exposure demands attention.” – Sam Theilman\, Variety \n“A simple\, fascinating production…It gives voice to a growing segment of the public\, urging that we reconsider how we treat former offenders. SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Productions Presents: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions and Ethical Culture for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, former ACLU President Susan Herman\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis \nStarring Jack Wetherall (the title character in The Elephant Man on Broadway) and Nesha Ward \nWith an added element of dance and music featuring Broadway tap dancer Gene Castle and guitarist Michael Citriniti \nFollowed by a discussion with: Martin Garbus and former ACLU President Susan Herman. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform: Ethical and Ecological Dancing with Resident Artist Jody Sperling
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nNYSEC’s Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling shares her dancemaking journey into the realms of ecology and ethics. She relates how the residency began\, the many ways that it is continuing to grow\, and the process behind making dances that respond to climate realities. Then\, she tells the story of how this climate-engaged work took her and company to Egypt–and how and why that tour was almost cancelled at the last minute. The presentation concludes with a collective movement experience. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests! \nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP on Zoom \nAbout Jody Sperling\nJody Sperling is a dancer\, choreographer\, and founder of the Time Lapse Dance ensemble. Since 2022 Sperling and company have been Eco-Artists-in-Residence at the New York Society of Ethical Culture where they are advancing their mission of dancing toward a more embodied\, sustainable\, and equitable future. \nSperling is the leading exponent of performance technology innovator Loie Fuller (1862-1928)\, and has expanded Fuller’s genre into contemporary and environmental forms. In 2014\, Sperling participated in a polar science mission and danced on Arctic sea ice\, creating the short dance film Ice Floe\, which was honored by the Creative Climate Awards. She earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature The Dancer (Dir. Stephanie DiGiusto\, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival). Sperling’s work and company are also prominently featured in the feature-length Fuller documentary “Obsessed with Light”. The Paul Taylor Dance Company performed two of Fuller’s works in their 2024 Lincoln Center Season. \nIn recent years\, Sperling’s work with her company and throughout the NYSEC residency has focused on creatively engaging with climate change and developing ecokinetics\, a practice that cultivates the relationship between human movers and ecological systems. \nMonthly Collection\nTime Lapse Dance \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Intergenerational Spring Festival: Ubuntu Circle of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nThis year’s spring festival\, hosted by Audrey Kindred & Simba Yangala\, with special guest artists\, is called “Ubuntu: circles of humanity on earth” \n\nThe concept of Ubuntu expresses a sense of interrelatedness that uplifts us all. Ubuntu is a deep concept from the cradle of humanity\, expressing a co-creational human dynamic of “creating beloved community” — interconnectedness\, mutuality\, belonging.  This term of African humanism\, expresses a notion that “people are people because of people.”  While this concept is expressed in many cultures\,  the theme of Ubuntu itself has been authentically shared with Young Ethical Explorers through the teachings of YEE teacher\, Simba Yangala.  We’ve been growing this theme since launching the Ethical community’s 2025 season with Dr. King’s emphasis on Beloved Community (with MLK fest\, banner\, special speaker\, colloquies …).\n \nGifts from Young Ethical Explorers will be shared with the community as we create a space for the deep values of ubuntu\, humanist belonging and beloved community  to thrive.\n\n\nAs Ethical NYC prepares to launch the 150th Year of the Ethical movement\, this gathering celebrates Felix Adler’s important notion\, certainly akin to Ubuntu\, that by bringing out the best others is how we can\, indeed\,  bring out the best in ourselves.\n\nOur April 13th spring festival launches Earth Day Awareness\, celebrating through the arts and community collaboration.\n\nCelebration will be followed by community lunch and social time on our peace playground.\n\nSpecial Guest Artist\nIsis Poulose\, dance choreographer and Fordham University graduate.\nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nTime Lapse Dance \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.
