Merriweather\, PhD.\nTinia is a social justice educator and applied developmental psychologist. Her focus is at the nexus of psychology and education – connected to the intersection of race\, gender\, and other identities and their interplay in the classroom and other contexts. Tinia teaches in the Ethics Department at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School and at NYU Steinhardt. With 30 years of experience\, she has taught at all levels from elementary through graduate school. Tinia aims for scholar-activism in achieving equity and justice in institutions and society. Her goal is to lead with love and toward liberation\, with a focus on Black joy. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nThe talk will be partially an autobiography\, or memoir\, of Marc Kagan’s almost fifty years in the labor movement\, his entry coming just a few years after the NYC fiscal crisis\, which marked the advent of the (still-ongoing) Neoliberal era. Kagan will also provide a critique and assessment of the labor movement today\, and its responses to this moment of crisis\, as we struggle both to preserve and reinvigorate democracy and address massive inequality. Under what circumstances might labor be in the forefront of this struggle\, as it was in Minneapolis this winter? \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nCan’t join us in person? He taught high school Social Studies for ten years; Zohran Mamdani later pronounced him his favorite high school teacher. He got his Ph.D. in History from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2023\, teaches Labor Politics at Brooklyn College\, and is the author of Take Back the Power: The Fall and Rise and Fall of NYC’s Transport Workers Union Local 100. Instead\, we will share our thoughts and observations about the impacts upon us and upon society as well as our own survival strategies. In-person only. \nAbout Dr. Pierre Arty\nPierre Arty\, M.D. is a member of the Ethical Culture Social Service Board and currently serves as the Chief Psychiatric Officer for Housing Works\, where he provides psychiatric supervision\, direct psychopharmacological treatment for adults and those with substance use disorder\, and oversees the Wellness program. \nDr. Arty was born in Cap-Hatien\, Haiti and raised in East Flatbush\, Brooklyn. He received his M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and his B.A. from Columbia College of Columbia University. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. He is also a Board member of World Compassion Fellowship\, an international humanitarian and development organization whose mission is to provide holistic development and care for the individual\, the family\, and the community. \nDr. Arty is a member of the Social Service Board of NYSEC and the author of the book Life and Death and the Things in Between\, published in 2017 and available on Amazon.

RSVP HERE\nTrash! has been described as a fascinating\, no-bullshit account of two decades in the waste industry\, offering a vivid portrait of the heroic labor\, anarchic spirit\, and often violent conditions experienced by the people who keep our cities clean. \nSimon Paré-Poupart began working as a garbageman to pay for school. After earning graduate degrees\, he pursued careers in more “respectable” professions\, yet ultimately found himself back on the truck—drawn by the physical intensity of the work\, the camaraderie of his rough-and-tumble colleagues\, and a sense of honesty and freedom that no other job had provided. \nRobin Nagle’s Picking Up is an ethnography of New York City’s Department of Sanitation based on more than a decade of work with the Department\, including time serving as a uniformed sanitation worker. In addition to her role with DSNY\, Nagle is a Clinical Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies in New York University’s School of Liberal Studies. She describes her scholarship as part of the emerging interdisciplinary field of discard studies. Please enter the Society’s western/ramp entrance on West 64th Street and follow our ushers and signs to find the room. \nUS-based businesses have been the greatest beneficiaries of the post-World War II international order\, rooted in human rights and the rule of law. Businesses thrive in stable\, democratic societies\, with strong institutions – independent courts\, a free press\, and a vibrant civil society. While many of these core democratic safeguards are being challenged\, business leaders have been reluctant to stand up. RSVP to watch on Zoom here. \nAbout Michael H. Posner\nMichael Posner is the Director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights\, the first human rights center at a business school. He also is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance. From September 2009 until March 2013\, he served in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. State Department. Before going into government\, he was the Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First\, a U.S.-based human rights advocacy organization. He is the author of Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy.
