Education is the theme of the month\, and NYSEC’s banner outside declares “Education builds Democracy.” As we meet on this Labor Day Weekend\, we’ll discuss and explore our connection with education – as learners\, as teachers\, and as a society benefiting from education. Is our system of education creating the informed citizens that a democracy requires? Is it generating the cadres of workers that industry demands? Is formal education the only road to a secure adulthood? Can education be creatively re-invented by each generation? Let’s share our ideas about what education means for us. \nDr. Richard Koral has been a Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture since 2017. Richard holds degrees from New York University and New York Law School\, and a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith pastoral counseling from the Hebrew Union College. He is the Leader Consultant to the Social Service Board and numerous committees in the Society. Active with the American Ethical Union\, Richard served on its Board as president from 2012 to 2015. DESCRIPTION:In his best-loved novel\, Balzac explores the uses and abuses of money with the particularity of a poet. A shabby Parisian boarding house in 1819 is the setting where his colorful characters collide. The sprawling\, vibrant\, and turbulent Paris of the post-Napoleonic era is itself a major character in the novel\, an emblem of the social upheaval that Balzac portrays so brilliantly. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. According to Wikipedia\, “Allyship is the practice of emphasizing social justice\, inclusion\, and human rights by members of an ingroup to advance the interests of an oppressed or marginalized outgroup. Allyship is part of the anti-oppression or anti-racist conversation\, which puts into use social justice theories and ideals.” Dr. Tyler will provide tips\, techniques\, barriers\, and future-thinking strategies to advance a system where collectiveness is the norm. \nDr. Dwinita Mosby Tyler is the Chief Catalyst and Founder of The Equity Project\, an organization designed to support organizations and communities in building diversity\, equity and inclusion strategies; and The HR Shop\, a human resources firm that supports non-profits and small businesses. She is the former Senior Vice President and Chief Inclusion Officer for Children’s Hospital Colorado\, the first African American woman to hold that position in the organization’s 100+ year history. Dr. Tyler is also the former Executive Director of the Office of Human Resources for the City and County of Denver\, the first African American woman to hold that position in the 63+ year history of the agency. She holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership\, a Master of Arts degree in Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Education\, is accredited by the Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence\, and holds a Cornell University Diversity & Inclusion certification. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Instead of meeting at the Society\, we’ll meet at the park entrance at 10:30. The Island has already become quite popular\, with long waiting lines. Please prepare for hot weather. \nLittle Island is the recently opened\, privately subsidized (with $260 million from Barry Diller) installation that replaced the old Pier 54 on the Hudson at 15th Street. The arresting structural design is by Englishman Thomas Heatherwick\, now well known for Vessel\, the “adult jungle gym” that forms the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development. Landscaping is by Signe Nielson\, the best-known landscape architect in New York\, who created the master plan for Hudson River Park and many other projects. SUMMARY:Miguel De La Torre: "Why We Come: Rethinking Our Immigration Crisis"
DESCRIPTION:The current immigration crisis on our southern borders has little to do with migrants seeking a better life. Its causes can be traced to the 1840s. Dr. De La Torre is an immigrant—once an undocumented immigrant—because of U.S. domestic and foreign beliefs and policies\, from Manifest Destiny to Gunboat Diplomacy. Because we fail to recognize the causes of our current immigration crises\, we fail to develop proper ethical and moral solutions. \nDr. Miguel De La Torre focuses his academic pursuits on social ethics within contemporary U.S. thought\, specifically on how religion affects race\, class\, and gender oppression. He is the recipient of the 2020 American Academy of Religion’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2021 Martin E. Marty Public Understanding of Religion Award. Dr. De La Torre is Professor of Social Ethics and Latinx Studies at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. He wrote the screenplay for the award-winning documentary film\, Trials of Hope and Terror. A Fulbright scholar\, he has taught in Indonesia\, Mexico\, South Africa\, Costa Rica\, Cuba\, and Germany\, and has authored over 100 articles and published 41 books (five of which won national awards). Prior to and continuing through the pandemic\, the violence in our city has risen and continues to rise every day. This is due to guns being trafficked to our great city. To end gun violence\, we need to support of the New York State Kingpin Gun Legislation [A674 (Paulin)/S6649 (Jackson) of 2019]. We must urge the state legislature to take swift and certain action immediately and contact our NY State Legislator to pass this into law. \nJackie Rowe-Adams is a life-long resident of Harlem. After losing two sons to gun violence\, she co-founded Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. to end this dreaded scourge in the community. Jackie is President of Local 299 and serves on the Advisory Board of New York City Division of Youth & Community Development’s Department of Youth Services\, as well as the boards of the Addicts Rehabilitation Center\, Harlem Week\, Inc. and Project Harmony. She has served on several community boards including the Civic Association Serving Harlem Health Care Network\, has worked with the Police Athletic League and the City of New York Parks and Recreation Department\, and is a member of the Mid-Manhattan NAACP. She has received numerous awards and citations for her social activism. \nJackie has worked with youth and seniors as a music specialist with Parks and Recreation since 1986\, and in 1996 started the non-profit organization Talented Seniors and Youth on the Move\, Inc.\, which provides performance opportunities and college scholarships. DESCRIPTION:Ethical Culture is a humanist community that esteems ethics as its core precept\, human worth and dignity as its central value\, and community\, sustainability and freedom as its principal goals.  Where did Ethical Culture come from?  What does it say to us today regarding the human condition? DESCRIPTION:The first reader of Tending the Perennials wrote: “Finally\, we have the 21st century Joseph Campbell we need.” If you remove the perennial actions and inquiries of art and religion from their institutional identities\, you start living a personal religion. Creating a life guided and fueled by the verbs of art and spirituality instead of their nouns changes everything—because you change the way you attend to what unfolds throughout the day. Don’t expect a cerebral lecture—Eric Booth experientially engages audiences (as does the book) and activates artistry in listening and discovering ideas to take away and use. \nIn 2015 Eric Booth was given the nation’s highest award in arts education\, and was named one of the 25 most influential people in the arts in the U.S. He began as a Broadway actor\, and became a businessman (his company became the largest of its kind in the U.S. in 7 years)\, and author of seven books\, the most recent is Tending the Perennials: The Art and Spirit of a Personal Religion\, which is a companion book to his bestseller The Everyday Work of Art. He has been on the faculty of Juilliard (12 years)\, Tanglewood (5 years)\, The Kennedy Center (20 years)\, and Lincoln Center Education(41 years)\, and serves as a consultant for many arts organizations (including seven of the ten largest U.S. orchestras)\, cities\, states and businesses around the U.S. and world. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy.
