DESCRIPTION:The Police Reform Organizing Project contends that the everyday practices of the NYPD\, as a matter of intentional policy\, inflict harm and hardship on our city’s most vulnerable populations: low-income persons of color\, individuals struggling with mental illness\, unhoused people\, sex workers\, street vendors\, and homeless LGBTQ youth. \nBob Gangi will describe PROP’s activities and strategies aimed at exposing and ending these abusive and racist practices and at creating a safe\, just\, and truly inclusive city for all New Yorkers. \nBob Gangi has been an activist\, community organizer and public policy advocate in New York City for over 40 years. Before he founded the Police Reform Organizing Project in April 2011\, he served as Executive Director of the Correctional Association for over 29 years. He is a recognized expert on criminal justice and law enforcement issues with a particular focus on police and prison concerns. He has cultivated ongoing relationships with members of the media and policymakers which have been critical to the CA and PROP’s advocacy and public education efforts. He has written or co-written numerous op-ed pieces for the New York Times\, Newsday\, and Albany Times Union. \nIn 2012 Bob was the recipient of the American Ethical Union’s prestigious Elliott-Black Award\, acknowledging his enduring dedication to the rights of vulnerable people caught up in the criminal justice system and his life’s work fighting for sweeping prison and police reform. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: What Humanists Can Learn From Religion at Its Best
DESCRIPTION:Humanists often see their beliefs in opposition to religion. Religion is the foil. It is superstitious\, irrational\, given to authoritarianism\, and politically too often a purveyor of misogyny\, homophobia\, and xenophobia. It often at times serves as a justification for violence. All these things are too often true. But I contend that religion is far more than that. After all\, Ethical Culture was founded as a religious movement\, though on the far-left end of religion. \nThere is also a side to religion\, the more philosophical side\, that speaks to the sublime. It asks questions about life’s deepest meaning and points to values that lie beneath the superficial manifestations of our consumer-driven lives. \nWe live in fraught times\, filled with polarizing ideologies\, political tribes\, and “political correctness.” These dynamics suffuse our political world and are spoken in a secular idiom. Yet\, I would argue that that religions at their best provide values and a vocabulary that are much needed but seldom employed in our political and secular world. Among the values I am thinking of are forgiveness\, repentance\, atonement\, and even versions of the sacred. \nI contend that we humanists would be better off if we adopted such values that people look for in religion but not often in the secular realm. We will explore these values and how our lives would be enriched if we were to embrace them. \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. DESCRIPTION:As we observe the 20th anniversary of 9/11\, we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty years ago\, it was the smoke\, ash\, and chemicals released by the raging fires in the wake of the destruction of the Twin Towers that threatened the health and safety of survivors. Today it is the invisible virus that continues to threaten us all\, while police violence that cuts off their breath always threatens Brown and Black men and women. On September 10\, 2001\, no one would have imagined the devastation that occurred here\, at the Pentagon\, and in Pennsylvania; in December 2019\, no one would have imagined how a virus would take the entire world hostage. \nHow do we catch our breath? What lessons can we learn from each of these catastrophic events? As we begin this new chapter of NYSEC\, what actions can we take to ensure a more just\, equitable world — one where everyone\, regardless of race\, religion\, ethnicity\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, can breathe easy? \nCOVID-19 Notice: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend at this time. She was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years before making a UU turn 12 years ago. Until coming to join us at NYSEC\, she served the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church as their settled minister for 13 years. Nori has been accepted by the American Ethical Union to complete course requirements to be certified as an Ethical Culture Leader. \nNori calls herself an “optimistic humanist” and believes we each have within us something that calls us to our highest selves. Whether that’s the evolutionary impulse that first led us ashore\, the universal innate experience of love or something else\, she’s still following that call and is always in awe of the miracles and mysteries of life in its most common forms. She is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. According to Wikipedia\, “Allyship is the practice of emphasizing social justice\, inclusion\, and human rights by members of an ingroup to advance the interests of an oppressed or marginalized outgroup. Allyship is part of the anti-oppression or anti-racist conversation\, which puts into use social justice theories and ideals.” Dr. Tyler will provide tips\, techniques\, barriers\, and future-thinking strategies to advance a system where collectiveness is the norm. \nDr. Dwinita Mosby Tyler is the Chief Catalyst and Founder of The Equity Project\, an organization designed to support organizations and communities in building diversity\, equity and inclusion strategies; and The HR Shop\, a human resources firm that supports non-profits and small businesses. She is the former Senior Vice President and Chief Inclusion Officer for Children’s Hospital Colorado\, the first African American woman to hold that position in the organization’s 100+ year history. Dr. Tyler is also the former Executive Director of the Office of Human Resources for the City and County of Denver\, the first African American woman to hold that position in the 63+ year history of the agency. She holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership\, a Master of Arts degree in Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Education\, is accredited by the Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence\, and holds a Cornell University Diversity & Inclusion certification. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Instead of meeting at the Society\, we’ll meet at the park entrance at 10:30. The Island has already become quite popular\, with long waiting lines. Please prepare for hot weather. \nLittle Island is the recently opened\, privately subsidized (with $260 million from Barry Diller) installation that replaced the old Pier 54 on the Hudson at 15th Street. The arresting structural design is by Englishman Thomas Heatherwick\, now well known for Vessel\, the “adult jungle gym” that forms the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development. Landscaping is by Signe Nielson\, the best-known landscape architect in New York\, who created the master plan for Hudson River Park and many other projects.
