SUMMARY:Ethical Adventures Easy Walkers: RFK Bridge
DESCRIPTION:The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (aka the Triboro) is actually a complex of bridges and elevated expressway viaducts linking Manhattan\, the Bronx\, and Queens. On the Manhattan side\, it begins with the bridge over the Harlem River to Randalls Island\, continues with the bridge over Bronx Kill\, and then the bridge over Hell Gate to Astoria\, Queens. \nVeteran Easy Walkers may recall that our first attempt at crossing the RFK Bridge was cut short by a police closure of the most spectacular section\, the Hell Gate suspension bridge. Disappointed\, we promised ourselves we’d reschedule it. The time has come! \nDetails: Meeting at Ethical\, corner of W. 64 and CPW at 9:30\, we’ll take the #1 train at W. 66th and Broadway to 103rd Street\, where we’ll transfer to the M60 and take that to 125th and Second Avenue\, the Manhattan side of the bridge. When we reach Astoria\, we’ll lunch at the Neptune Diner\, probably the most famous diner in New York. We’ll return home via the M60 and #1. (The N train is also nearby in Astoria.) Rain date: Wednesday\, June 8. \n(Image by Rublov – Own work\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=115653571)

SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series with Leader Joe Chuman: ‘Power Hungry: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement’ with Suzanne Cope (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the Puffin Cultural Forum have announced the Puffin Interview Series with our own Leader Dr. Joe Chuman! On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format\, all streamed live on Youtube. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \nThis month: Dr. Suzanne Cope \nPOWER HUNGRY: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement is the true story of two unsung women who used food as a weapon for social and political change in the Black Freedom Movement: Cleo Silvers\, a Black Panther in New York City whose work focused on child hunger and inner city health care\, and Aylene Quin\, a tavern owner and bootlegger in McComb\, MS\, whose passion was voting rights. Both were attacked by government forces. These parallel stories\, separated by a few years and a few thousand miles\, intersect in surprising ways and provide a model for activists today. Buy POWER HUNGRY here. \nSuzanne Cope\, PhD is a narrative journalist and food studies scholar with a focus on food as a tool for social and political change. In addition to her upcoming book POWER HUNGRY and SMALL BATCH (2014)\, she has written about food and culture for the New York Times\, The Atlantic\, CNN\, BBC\, among others. She also actively publishes and presents in academic forums and teaches writing and about food and politics at New York University. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband\, the musician Steve Mayone\, and her two children.  \nFor information about in-person attendance please visit the Puffin Cultural Forum’s website. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals. Joe currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. \nWatch Live Here!

SUMMARY:First Sundays: 'Twas the Night Before Pride' with Author Joanna McClintick
DESCRIPTION:A glittering celebration of queer families puts Pride gently in perspective—honoring those in the LGBTQ+ community who fought against injustice and inequality. \nAuthor Joanna McClintick joins us to share her illustrated poem ‘Twas the Night Before Pride\, that tells\, beyond the glitter and rainbows of PRIDE\, “the beautiful resistance that made PRIDE come to be.” \nThis joyful picture-book homage to a day of community and inclusion—and to the joys of anticipation—is also a comprehensive history. With bright\, buoyant illustrations and lyrical\, age-appropriate rhyme modeled on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas\,” it tackles difficult content such as the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS marches. On the night before Pride\, families everywhere are preparing to partake. As one family packs snacks and makes signs\, an older sibling shares the importance of the march with the newest member of the family. Reflecting on the day\, the siblings agree that the best thing about Pride is getting to be yourself. Debut author Joanna McClintick and Pura Belpré Award–winning author-illustrator Juana Medina create a new classic that pays homage to the beauty of families of all compositions—and of all-inclusive love. \nPraise for ‘Twas the Night Before Pride: \n“Rainbows abound in Medina’s full-color digital illustrations\, which incorporate historical references and depict a wonderfully diverse cast. . . While there is no shortage of picture books about Pride\, this one may be the most inclusive and expansive yet. . . . An affirming and kid-friendly history lesson.”\n—Kirkus Reviews \n“McClintick presents a loving survey of the queer community in all its diversity. . . Medina’s rainbow-flecked digital illustrations do a superb job of capturing the spirit and scope of Pride and the excitement it generates\, while the sprightly text joins in the celebration. With affirming discussions of togetherness and LGBTQ+ rights\, the book’s final takeaway that “being yourself is a blast” hits just the right note.”\n—Booklist \nNewcomers are always welcome! To join us in person or to receive the Zoom webinar link\, please RSVP to Youth Programs Director Audrey Kindred at youngethicalexplorers@gmail.com. SUMMARY:Jé Exodus Hooper: 'Cultural Humanism: The Next Ethical Generation' (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \n“I got myself ready and went to the Ethical Culture Society at the Century Club to hear Prof. Josiah Royce on “Race Questions and Prejudice.’ I went early… I did [before] it was crowded – but such an audience! CULTURE written on every line of their faces – an audience as you would so enjoy.” -Mary Locke (Alain Locke’s mother) \nMary Locke writes Culture with a capital “C”. Culture here is more than an elitist escape for Black Victorians and Intellectual Freethinkers at the turn of the century\, it is the cultivation of an ideal society\, one with black thriving futures. This kind of Cultural vision within our pre-dated Humanist community can become a blueprint for people on the margins rooted in oppression within a precarious existence. With this in mind\, let us contemplate Humanism’s response to Culture. How does Culture inform our Humanist practices and values? What are the lines of hospitality written on the faces we see? \nEthical NYC Food Drive: Please bring a can of protein–tuna\, chicken\, beans\, etc.–a jar of nut butter\, or box of pasta to Platform to support our Food Insecurity Initiative. Spices and cooking oils are requested as well\, as they are not covered by SNAP and the price of cooking oil has skyrocketed.  \nAn educator for 10 years in the inner-city schools of New York City\, Washington D.C and Baltimore\, Maryland\, Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper was challenged by the prevalent divide the black and brown community still faced despite their solidarity in culture. Much of his teaching was dedicated to incorporating unconventional schools of thought—expeditionary learning\, performance studies\, singing chants\, and helping students develop self-esteem by creating a micro-community that could advocate their own needs. \nJé completed a Master of Professional Studies in Arts and Cultural Management at Pratt Institute. Most recently\, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology with a concentration in Interfaith and Interreligious Engagement at Union Theological Seminary. Last year Jé was ordained as an Interfaith minister through New Seminary\, a practicum-based program through which he holds his license. Jé now serves as a voluntary Associate Director of the Interfaith Temple\, an intern of Middle Collegiate Church as the Minister of Education\, and on the Interfaith Council with the United Nations. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Nori Rost \nShared Charity: Camp Linden \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:AEU Salon on Biocentrism w/ Curt Collier (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Eighty to ninety years after its founding\, Ethical Culture saw the rise of Humanism as a new organizing set of ideas in which. to describe the aspirations of the Ethical Movement. It can be argued that this was very different from Adler’s original philosophical orientation and revealed the triumph of “Deweyism” over “Adleriansim.” Some Ethical Culture congregations went even further afield\, stating that Ethical Culture and Unitarianism were more aligned in thought. Sixty years later\, we have to ask whether Humanism has served our ideology well. \nFor the past 20 years\, Curt Collier\, the newly installed Leader of the Bergen Ethical Society and presenter for this upcoming salon\, challenged the notion that congregations need to be aligned with Humanism\, and has called for a return to some of Adler’s original thought. He argues that Ethical Biocentrism is more consistent with Adler’s Ethical Culture than Ethical Humanism\, and therefore\, is a better model going forward. This salon will cover these topics\, including a discussion of what is Ethical Biocentrism and what an Ethical Culture congregation who adopts this philosophy would do differently. \nAbout our Presenter:\n\nAn Ethical Culture Leader for over 25 years\, Curt Collier has served five Ethical Societies\, and is a co-founder of the Ethical Society of Austin. He is currently the Leader of the Bergen Ethical Culture Society and a Consulting Leader for the Silicon Valley Society. For the past 15 years\, Collier was the National Youth Programs Director for Groundwork USA\, an environmental organization created by the National Park Service and the EPA\, and has developed youth programs and corps in 20 US cities and 25 national parks.  Collier has worked closely with the National Park Service\, the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and NASA to create career training pipelines for young adults\, and has presented research on youth engagement before the American Academy for the Advancement of Science and Sigma Xi\, the National Science Research Society.  He is a single father and travels frequently between his work in New Jersey and his home in Virginia. \nZoom Info:\nJoin by computer\, tablet\, or smartphone: https://bit.ly/biocentrism-salon \nJoin by phone: Enter meeting code 892 2337 3961

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter\, Stories 5-10 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:From familiar fairy tales and legends Angela Carter created an absorbing collection of dark\, sensual\, fantastic stories. When she died in 1992 her reputation instantly went from cultish to canonical. Margaret Atwood said: “She was a quirky\, original\, and baroque stylist\, a trait especially marked in The Bloody Chamber – her vocabulary a mix of finely tuned phrase\, luscious adjective\, witty aphorism\, and hearty\, up-theirs vulgarity.” \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Screening & Discussion - "Racially Charged: America's Misdemeanor Problem" and the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Society and our allies for a screening of a short documentary Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem\, organized by 4th Universalist. Additionally\, two speakers will help push for the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act via a phoning call to action. It’s already fairly planned out so co-sponsorship would mostly mean having West End Synagogue show their support by listing their name on any materials and inviting people (no money\, on Zoom\, and little effort!). \nThe screening of Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem will be followed by a discussion about the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act with: \n\nDerrick Hamilton\, a formerly incarcerated man who became a jailhouse lawyer and whose exoneration lead him to push for the bill\nRebecca Brown\, Director of Policy at the Innocence Project\, who will give an overview of why so many innocent people plead guilty to misdemeanors (to avoid jail time and the legal process) as well as information on the bill.\n\nQ&A will follow\, along with instructions for how to contact your legislators to support the bill. \nHosted by 4th Universalist and co-sponsored by the New York Society for Ethical Culture and others. \nRegister in advance here: http://tinyurl.com/MisdemeanorProblem
