SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Game Night with City Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Philip Lindsay and Forrest Sparks (facilitator and designer)\, and the City Atlas network. \nJoin us June 14\, July 12\, and August 16! \nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite \nThe goal of these sessions is to provide a consistent time and place where the public can come to learn and play collaborative climate/environmental and energy games.  We’ll primarily play Energetic\, but also the upcoming Daybreak\, and the recently released “Climate Fresk.” We will likely also play games that deal with governance/politics. \nIf we are to confront the climate crisis at scale\, we will need to collaborate and coordinate across fields\, neighborhoods\, cultures and industries. A serious energy transition demands such coordination (that’s what Energetic the game teaches us). Collaborative games and policy making forums (such as deliberative citizens’ assemblies) point the way forward to enable us to do this at scale. They orient participants towards longterm goals and enable them to work through scenarios of the coming decades\, in order to discuss what policies will be most efficient and successful at reducing emissions while maintaining public support. \nAbout the Hosts \nPhilip Lindsay grew up in Philadelphia and lives in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. He leads the Democracy Innovation Hub (DIH) at the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College. In July of 2022\, the Hub hosted “Citizens’ Assemblies: A Workshop to Revitalize Democracy\,” which brought together over 50 public servants\, elected officials\, and community advocates. This led to the implementation of three deliberative budgeting processes in NYC government in 2023. Philip also co-taught the course “Democratic Innovation and Citizen Lotteries: from Ancient Athens to the French Climate Assembly.” The Hub also hosted the “Doing Democracy Differently Teacher Fellowship” which trains high school teachers on how to bring deliberative democracy into the classroom. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination required. Masks optional but strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Michael S. Franch: 'The Person Before You: Reflections on Worth'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nEthical Culture puts a high value on the concept of worth. Felix Adler\, our founder\, made it central to his philosophy\, and took great pains to distinguish it from “value.” This can can be challenging. Do we have to treat everyone as a person of worth and dignity? Even Adler acknowledged that this can be really hard to do! To complicate things\, sometimes we see race or gender expression or social status\, but not the totality of the person. If we really believe in worth and dignity\, how do we live our lives? \nWhat impairs our sight are habits of seeing as well as the mental concomitants of seeing.  Our sight is suffused with knowing\, instead of feeling painfully the lack of knowing what we see.  The principle to be kept in mind is to know what we see rather than to see what we know. -Abraham J. Heschel\, The Prophets\, The Jewish Publication Society of America\, 1962\, p. xv. \nDr. Michael S. Franch is an Ethical Culture Leader and an affiliate minister at Baltimore’s First Unitarian Church. Trained as a historian\, he served as Leader of the Baltimore Ethical Society before working in health policy and planning for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He is now a retired old guy. He is a board member of the Baltimore City Historical Society and the Green Burial Association of Maryland. He plays the concertina\, loves English country and contra dancing\, and riding his bicycle around town. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Nori Rost \nMonthly Collection: Billion Oyster Project \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Nori Rost: What Can Creation Spirituality Teach Us About Glorious Diversity?
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nCreation Spirituality\, first espoused in Matthew Fox’s 1983 book\, Original Blessing\, rejoices in and courageously honors the rich diversity within the Cosmos which is expressed in every individual and embodies multiple cultures\, religions\, and ancestral traditions. Creation is rife with theme and variation and yet fear has driven us to try to tame\, label and homogenize it. \nDr. Rost will explore\, from an Ethical Humanist perspective\, what we lose when we privilege dominant voices and limit perspectives and how we can create space for Glorious Diversity to be celebrated in our midst. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection: Billion Oyster Project \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:One Year Post-Roe: Reflections on U.S. and Global Abortion Rights
DESCRIPTION:As we reach the one-year mark of the fall of Roe\, the Guttmacher Institute’s dire predictions about the damage to come have borne out. Globally\, our allies watch with concern to prepare for the potential implications around the world. \nIn the face of these challenges\, Guttmacher\, together with our partners and allies in the U.S. and global abortion rights movement are fighting back. SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Student Debt Relief (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nBy now most of the graduation ceremonies have been held for all levels of students. For those who graduated from college\, another clock has begun ticking: in 6 months\, (in ordinary times\, anyway) their first student loan payment will be due. For the past several years\, the concept of student loan forgiveness has been bandied about. It was a major part of Bernie Sanders’ platform\, and President Biden has proposed a $20\,000 reduction of student loans. For some\, that would be a major relief; for others\, not even a drop in the bucket. Should the government forgive student loans? Should there be stipulations? Who should qualify. What can we do about the rising cost of education? \nhttps://www.nytimes.com/article/biden-student-loan-forgiveness.html \nhttps://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/26/house-passes-bill-blocking-student-debt-forgiveness.html \nhttps://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/12/as-supreme-court-weighs-biden-forgiveness-plan-student-debt-swells.html \nFree and open to the public!\nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Masks are optional but strongly encouraged. \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 861 1417 5760 | Passcode 347145

SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Rest as Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Stop by our final Unplugged of the season in-person and receive a special gift! \nIn-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimagining of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Come early for wine and snacks! \nWhile we’ve been talking about about sexuality and embodied pleasure over the past few weeks\, there are plenty of ways to experience embodied pleasure in a non-sexual way. On our closing Ethics Unplugged\, we’ll discuss our favorite non-sexual ways to experience embodied pleasure. Then we invite you to stick around and share a glass of wine and some treats as we close out the Ethics Unplugged series for now. \nJune’s Theme: Wild and Holy Embodiment\, Pt. II \nAs we head into our final month of our Ethics Unplugged experiment we will continue to focus on embodied pleasure. The conversations through May have been deeply personal\, theoretical\, and just down right juicy! We couldn’t cover all the topics we wanted to\, so we’re extending the theme. Living ethically is always an embodied experience\, but sometimes we Ethical Humanists tend to get stuck in our head and forget we even have a body! \nThis month we’ll explore embodied movement\, talk about sex in our elder years\, and explore how rest can be resistance. As always\, we will bring the hermeneutics of ethics to these conversations\, remembering there is an ethical practice in the most radical spaces to engage the most revolutionary acts of pleasure. \nThe first three weeks will be Zoom webinars only\, to accommodate our guest speakers\, but join us live and in person on June 22nd to celebrate the wrap-up of a great experiment! People who attend in person will be given a special gift to help you love and appreciate your beautiful\, strong\, tender\, capable bodies! \nWatch Online! Click to Join at Start | Zoom ID 864 8703 7420 \nFree and open to the public!\nCOVID-19 Notice: Masks are optional but strongly encouraged.
