SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater Presents: HEISENBERG by Simon Stephens
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues on September 29 and October 1 with two performances of Simon Stephens’s Heisenberg: \nIn a crowded London train station\, Georgie spots Alex\, a man much older than her\, and plants a kiss on his neck. This encounter thrusts these strangers\, who are so utterly dissimilar\, into a life-affirming mating dance. Heisenberg brings to blazingly theatrical life the alternatives that could shape our lives at every moment. \nAfter the performance\, we’ll host a lively discussion of the ethical issues raised by the play. \nPerformed by Laurie Schroeder Callen and Charles E. Gerber Directed by Tom Herman \nSuggested Donation: Members $10; Non-Members $15 \nPurchase tickets on Eventbrite here! \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required to attend. Masks are optional but strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Warren Epstein Presents: BORSCHT BELTED
DESCRIPTION:At Ethical NYC September 21 & 22: Laughs\, dreams and cold beet soup in the cradle of American comedy! \nCatskills native Warren Epstein’s acclaimed one-man show comes to Ethical! From screaming\, maniacal chefs to the Kings and Queens of Stand-up\, Borsht Belted conjures the sights\, smells\, and snickers in a place that still resonates in our collective funny bone. \nEpstein channels Rodney Dangerfield\, Woody Allen\, Jack Benny\, and other humor pioneers as he recreates his childhood memories from the famous Catskill resort area in New York. His poignant recreation of Jimmy Grecco–“King of the Catskills”–gives us a memorable portrait of a great comic and the incredible era of American Comedy that produced him. \nEpstein brings the Borscht Belt back to life in all it’s schtick-filled glory. You’ll smell the gefilte fish and laugh out a lung as you journey through the quirky bungalow colonies\, smoky cocktail lounges\, and majestic resorts that now exist only in memory. \nThursday\, September 21 performance will be followed by a special talkback. Come share your Borscht Belt stories! \nTickets: $35\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite! \nMember Discount! Contact mdetermann@nysec.org. \nRead about Borscht Belted at the Colorado Springs Indy! \n“It’s funny about when you grow up in a place that’s unique\,” Epstein says\, “you think everything is entirely normal. So to me\, Milton Berle playing on Saturday a few blocks from my house — that was just another Saturday night.” Milton Berle\, along with comedians like Woody Allen\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Joan Rivers and Marc Maron got their start in the Catskills resorts\, where the Jewish population of New York would go to unwind. The Catskills comedy scene has long since died away\, leaving empty hotels and a fading legacy. Epstein says: “I’m realizing that my memory and my experience\, along with the historic significance of it\, you know\, it called me to do something theatrically about it.” \nChanneling these comedians and his own memories of sneaking into comedy shows and working in famous hotels\, Epstein has created a one-man show to honor both the famous and the forgotten Borscht Belt funnymen who changed the landscape of American comedy. The audience can look forward to meeting Jimmy Grecco\, Epstein’s composite of the comedic personalities he knew and witnessed\, who will narrate a journey through a formative piece of theatrical history. It’s an important story for Epstein to tell\, and not just because it connects to his childhood. It connects to his heritage\, and the shared heritage of many American Jews. \nWatch a Preview:

SUMMARY:Food for Thought Productions Presents - Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! Followed by a Q&A with the cast\, playwright\, director\, Marty Garbus\, and former NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Osgood. \nDon’t miss Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, part two of Food for Thought Productions’ new series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nUnlucky Gal tells the story of Jane Doe\, a twenty-seven year old gay black woman who was raped in Prospect Park in April\, 1994. \nTwo days later\, Mike McAlary of the The New York Daily News began publishing a series of three articles\, based on anonymous police sources\, claiming that Jane Doe was lying about her assault\, although the NYPD did have evidence to the contrary. Devastated\, Jane Doe sued McAlary and the The New York Daily News for libel\, but lost. \nIn 2013 the play Lucky Guy\, based on McAlary\, opened on Broadway. Marty Garbus wrote an editorial for The New York Times pointing out that Jane Doe’s story still had not been told\, and asked\, “Who will tell Jane Does’ story?” \nIn 2017\, Michael Osgood\, Deputy Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit\, heard a radio interview that mentioned the Jane Doe case and Marty’s op-ed. Osgood read the piece\, and knowing Garbus’ reputation\, reopened the case. In 2018\, DNA evidence revealed Jane Doe’s attacker. \nJane Doe’s fight for justice took nearly two and a half decades. It’s time to tell her story. SUMMARY:Climate\, Politics\, and Corporate Power: A Conversation with Steven Donziger
DESCRIPTION:FREE! Hear human rights attorney Steven Donziger discuss his fight for justice at the intersection of climate\, politics\, and corporate power. \nDonations encouraged to benefit the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund. $500 donors receive preferred seating and access to a pre-show reception with Steven\, Michael\, Ayisha\, and Marty. \nJoin us in conversation with noted human rights attorney Steven Donziger about being targeted with the nation’s first corporate prosecution after helping Amazon communities win a historic $10 billion pollution case against Chevron. Steven is a leading thinker operating at the intersection of climate\, law\, and corporate power. He is also the first US attorney to be jailed by a corporation in retaliation for his human rights work. \nSteven will be joined by actor\, writer\, director\, and activist Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos and White Lotus)\, climate justice advocate and one of Time Magazine’s 2023 Women of the Year Ayisha Siddiqa\, and the legendary civil rights attorney Marty Garbus. Marty has represented Steven for years as Chevron attacked him with 60 law firms\, and he formerly represented Nelson Mandela and Vaclav Havel\, among others. \nFREE! Donations encouraged to support the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund.\nClick Here to RSVP! \nMore About Steven \nAfter helping Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted him for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. \nThe judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. \nThe private Chevron prosecutor immediately ordered Steven locked up at home with a 24/7 monitoring device on his ankle\, while his trial was delayed for over two years. He ended up spending 993 days in detention and in prison for a misdemeanor offense with a maximum sentence of 180 days; the judge denied him a jury. \nHe is still the only person ever in the US locked up in retaliation for his human rights work. Chevron used 60 law firms and 2\,000 lawyers to attack Steven. He now enjoys the support of 68 Nobel Laureates and more than 150 bar associations and civil society groups around the world and is considered a leading global spokesperson on the issues of human rights\, climate justice\, Indigenous rights\, and the law. \nLearn more about Steven at FreeDonziger.com.
