SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Nori Rost: Ready\, Set\, Wait
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nLast month\, Dr. Rost talked about the importance of setting intentions to create a different reality for ourselves. She gave us three first steps in setting our intentions\, so we create a year by design. \nIn this platform\, she’ll talk about one of the next steps which is determining if your dream is worthy of you! If you’re going to put your heart and passion into designing a life you love\, there are five questions you should ask first to determine if your dream is a worthy one. Join us as she shares those questions with us today. \nIf you missed last month’s platform you can watch it here. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Nori Rost\nLeader Dr. Nori Rost is the newest Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Joe Chuman: What Humanists Can Learn from the Religions
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. In-person and online! \nThe religious character of Ethical Culture can be infinitely debated. But what is certain is that Felix Adler founded Ethical Culture a religious movement\, though on the extreme left-wing of religious belief. As Ethical Culture evolved into an explicitly humanist movement\, for many members it became identified as a secular in its basic commitments. This tension remains in Ethical Culture. \nTo the extent that it has veered toward a secular (and for some even an anti-religious worldview) in my opinion Ethical Culture has ceded essential values that are viewed as primarily the possession of the religions\, though there is no reason all people of good-will\, who strive to live ethical lives should not appreciate them. Among these values are reverence\, repentance\, atonement\, grace and forgiveness. \nMy address will be an exploration of these values\, as well as others\, and how appropriating them for ourselves can enrich our lives. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Joe Chuman\nLeader Dr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nMonthly Collection\nUplifting Afghan Girls in New York \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with C.K. Allen: Letter From a Birmingham Jail
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nJoin us for a special Sunday Platform presented by our Ethics and the Theater team. This week we’ll feature a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail by actor C.K. Allen\, directed by Tai Thompson. \nIn this open letter written on April 16\, 1963\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. argues that people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws and to take direct action rather than waiting potentially forever for justice to come through the courts. King writes: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” King’s imprisonment was during The Birmingham campaign which included coordinated marches and sit-ins against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham\, Alabama. The nonviolent campaign was coordinated by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). It began on April 3. On April 10\, Circuit Judge W. A. Jenkins Jr. issued a blanket injunction against “parading\, demonstrating\, boycotting\, trespassing\, and picketing.” Leaders of the campaign announced they would disobey the ruling. On April 12\, King was arrested with SCLC activist Ralph Abernathy\, ACMHR\, and SCLC official Fred Shuttlesworth. The letter\, widely published\, became an important text for the American Civil Rights Movement. It’s time to listen to King’s words once more. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout C.K.
