SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: The Glass Menagerie
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues with Tennessee Williams’ classic The Glass Menagerie. \nJoin us for a reception 30 minutes before showtime\, and for a post-reading talkback with the cast and director exploring the ethical questions raised by the play. \nEncore performance on Sunday\, June 9 at 1:30pm! \nAbout The Glass Menagerie\nThis classic of the American theater revolves around the Wingfield family: Tom\, an aspiring poet; Laura\, Tom’s painfully shy sister who escapes into the world of her glass animal figurines\, and their mother\, Amanda\, who dreams of her days as a debutante. When Tom\, pressured by Amanda\, brings home a “gentleman caller” for Laura\, the illusions that make their lives bearable are threatened. \nPerformed by Adam Burby\, Pat Debrovner\, Jane Minus\, and Wesley Mitchell. Directed by Leslie Kincaid Burby. Produced by Pat Debrovner. \nRSVP\nSuggested Donation: $10 Members / $15 Public \nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:SOUND~EARTH~MOTION: Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance Performance and Gala
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Time Lapse Dance ensemble with live musical performances by composer Matthew Burtner\, MET Orchestra musicians\, and pianist Jeffrey Middleton. \nSchedule\n7:00-8:00pm – Performance\n8:00-9:30pm – Gala Reception with Artists \nAbout SOUND~EARTH~MOTION\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble exploring human entanglement with nature. Featured works highlight the climate-engaged collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. Arbor dwells on the intimacy of trees. In Wind Rose\, dancers render changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch. A rare reprisal of Sperling’s masterful solo Clair de lune evokes the shimmer of a moonlit sky. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract the essence of human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers variously appearing to conjure a growing forest or hovering storm clouds. The company’s unique style of movement draws inspiration from and furthers the art form created by dance icon Loie Fuller (1862-1928) a century ago. \n“conjures a timelapse photograph of a flower bud opening to full blossom”\n—Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord \n“[Sperling’s] mission is climate activism through body consciousness”\n—Janet Koplos\, Arts Writer & NYSEC Member \nFollowing the performance\, enjoy a sparkling evening\, from wine to conversation\, with the artists\, fellow Time Lapse Dance fans\, and members of the Ethical NYC community. Light dinner fare served at this cocktail-style gala. \nBuy Tickets\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite \nArtists & Performers\nTime Lapse Dance Dancers: Frances Barker\, Anika Hunter\, Maki Kitahara\, Nicole Lemelin\, Jody Sperling\, Sarah Tracy & Rathi Varma \nMET Orchestra String Quartet: Bruno Eicher (violin)\, Sarah Vonsattel (violin)\, Kari Jane Docter (cello) \nCostumes: Mary Jo Mecca (construction)\, Gina Nagy Burns (textile artist) \nThis program is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture\, with the generous support of the Peck Stacpoole Foundation\, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Game Night with City Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Hosted the City Atlas network! \nIf we are to confront the climate crisis at scale\, we will need to collaborate and coordinate across fields\, neighborhoods\, cultures and industries. A serious energy transition demands such coordination (that’s what Energetic the game teaches us). Collaborative games and policy making forums (such as deliberative citizens’ assemblies) point the way forward to enable us to do this at scale. They orient participants towards long-term goals and enable them to work through scenarios of the coming decades\, in order to discuss what policies will be most efficient and successful at reducing emissions while maintaining public support. \nWe can teach everyone in the US (and then around the world) how to fix climate change with accurate\, updatable info\, scaling from a 2.5 hr game to a monthlong series of workshops\, matched to the region in which they live. And it’s fun! \nEnergetic as seen in New York Times\, on NY1\, and featured in METROPOLIS \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Joe Chuman: Holding Fast to Our Values in a Time of Chaos and Peril
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nAmerican democracy is in greater peril than at any time since the Civil War. Though the United States has well entrenched institutions to safeguard our democracy\, and a Constitution that has served us well for more than 200 years\, democracy is not self-sustaining. It is only as strong as the will\, values and virtues of the people who comprise our nation. If the public is indifferent or does not care\, democracy can readily fade. \nThe presidential election this November may augur the end of the American experiment. But our political reality extends more deeply than the fact that we effectively have only one political party\, with the other committed to the destruction of our democratic system. What reaches further is the flourishing of irrationality\, lies\, conspiracy theories\, and rejection of the legitimate authority of experts. There have always been strands of irrationality that have flowed through American values. But it has always been on the fringes; now adopted by tens of millions of Americans\, it has gone mainstream. Without a commitment to truthfulness there can be no trust. And without trust there can be no democracy\, let alone a coherent society. We live in a kaleidoscopic reality\, which impinges on our sanity. \nHere is where Ethical Culture comes in. Despite our small size\, our values are the values that serve as the foundation of a sane and democratic society. Our values are critical values and we need to hold fast to them. A further exploration of the relation of what we stand for and the mainstays of democracy will be my topic of May 19th. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Joe Chuman\nLeader Dr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nMonthly Collection\nNew York Civil Liberties Union \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Lunch with the League of Women Voters NYC: 'Voting in Jails' with Hazel Weiser
DESCRIPTION:In 1974 the United States Supreme Court recognized a citizen’s right to vote when detained in New York State county jails while serving misdemeanor sentences or awaiting trial. However\, that right has been ignored\, undermined\, and rarely actualized. Here in New York City\, there are more than 6000 people detained at Rikers Island at any one time. Over 85% of those detained are awaiting trial and therefore presumed innocent. Despite concerted efforts by the Voting in Jails Coalition\, of which the League of Women Voters of NYC is a member\, the right to vote in jail remains severely compromised. \nInspired by the stories told by formerly incarcerated people\, the League of Women Voters of New York Criminal Justice Reform Committee saw an opportunity to determine the actual status of voting in all of New York State’s jails. The survey\, conducted during Spring 2023 was published in June 2023\, and its findings are the basis for the latest advocacy\, education\, and legislative efforts to ensure access to the ballot for this often underserved and overlooked population. \nHazel Weiser supervised the data collection and is the author of Voting in New York Jails: A Qualitative Analysis of Access (June 2023). She will review her findings and discuss short term and long term recommendations to improve access to the ballot for those detained in New York City and New York State jails. \nSpeaker: Hazel Weiser is a retired attorney\, law professor\, and law school administrator who has spent the last seven years working with the League of Women Voters of NYC and NY State and currently with Trinity Church Prison Ministry promoting jail-based voting as an aspect of self-empowerment. Through the LWVNYC\, she has taught the history of voting rights and the history of voter suppression in high schools\, colleges\, faith-based organizations\, and reentry groups throughout New York City. \nTickets\n$20 – Click Here to Purchase on Eventbrite \nAbout the League of Women Voters NYC\nVisit the League of Women Voters in the City of New York at lwvnyc.org.
