DESCRIPTION:Last September marked the 50th year since I started my career as a professional Ethical Culture leader\, in fact\, right here at the New York Society. Many personal streams brought me to humanism and Ethical Culture\, but I want to focus on one thinker without whose influence I would not have made my to our movement. That figure is the humanist and social psychologist Erich Fromm\, whose thought I discovered at 16 and at a critical time in my life. \nFromm spoke to both my personal needs and to the state of the world\, including the emergence of fascism and the dehumanizing aspects of corporate capitalism\, in ways that remain relevant. \nMore personal than most addresses\, I look forward to sharing aspects of Fromm’s social philosophy and how he helped shape my life and thought. \nShared Charity: Bergen Sanctuary Coalition \nPresider: Kathleen O’Connell \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. DESCRIPTION:Angeline joins us to share reflections of the strategy and accomplishments of the Student Nonviolent Movement of the 1960’s and the actions of the adult community that supported them. \nAngeline Butler\, currently an Adjunct Professor in Africana Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, has recently been honored by the Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence Award (April 2019\, The 28th Anniversary Malcolm King. Annual Scholarship Breakfast at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (2018)\, The Selma Jubilee  “Freedom Flame Award” and was presented a sermon on Martin Luther King\, Jr. at the Saint Peters Lutheran Church in 2012.   Ms.   Butler is a professional entertainer and has a massive number of credits in variety TV with Johnny Carson\, Dick Cavett\, Hugh Hefner\, performances with Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras and is a recording artist on both Columbia Records and Coburt-MGM Records.   She is an alumni of Columbia University\, The Juilliard School and Fisk University. A recent publication is “Hands On the Freedom Plow: Accounts by Women of SNCC” University of Illinois Press. (2012)& (2010) Press. \nShared Charity: A.J. Muste Memorial Institute \nPresider: Sarah Tielemans \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. She creates novel educational curricula and builds public installations that integrate her research with technology\, environment\, and interactive participation to facilitate understanding across society. \nIn this talk she will present her scientific findings and discuss their practical implications in education and public experience. She will focus on the role science\, technology\, and design can play in not only driving society forward with innovation\, but also in uniting myriad cultures around curiosity and shared knowledge. \nShe has been published in multiple scientific journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Science\, Journal of Neuroscience\, and Neuron\, and has been featured on radio shows such as NPR’s Radiolab and Voice of America.
