SUMMARY:Prof. Karim-Aly Kassam: 'A Methodology of Hope for the Climate Crises: The Role of Ecological Calendars'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWhy is a methodology of hope relevant to climate change research among indigenous and rural communities? Indigenous and rural societies which have not contributed to climate change are at its vanguard. Thereby\, exacerbating existing inequities and increasing anxiety about livelihood and food systems. The immediate impact can be seen on food systems of indigenous and rural communities. Disruption and anxiety caused by climate crises not only affects their wellbeing\, but also the food security of larger urban populations. Our research proposes a methodology of hope using ecological calendars to anticipate climate change. Building anticipatory capacity – being able to visualize diverse futures – is at the core of being able to address the anxieties caused by unpredictable weather changes. Grounded in the local ecology and culture\, these calendars represent an effective adaptive response to climatic variation and may even be applicable in Manhattan. \nDr. Karim-Aly Kassam is International Professor of Environmental and Indigenous Studies in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. He is jointly appointed to the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment and the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program. Read more about him here. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Audrey Kindred \nMonthly Collection: The Deskovic Foundation for Justice \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Joe Chuman: Religion's Expanding Turf and the Fate of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nConservative religious forces have become more politically powerful since the late 1790s. That increasing power has led to the dismantling of the wall of separation of church and state and the steady incursion of religion into the public square. Since religion is a major driver of culture\, with politically empowered religion has come an assault on democratic values and individual rights\, an ominous move sustained by  the supreme court. This address will provide a history and analysis of this political development. \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. \nDuring his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nPresider: TBA \nMonthly Collection: TBA \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Carlos Rojas Alvarez: "Decolonizing Wealth: Money as Medicine to Heal Divides and Restore Balance"
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThough it seems counterintuitive\, the philanthropic industry has evolved to mirror centuries-old colonial structures and reproduce economic and racial hierarchy\, according to Indigenous philanthropist and activist Edgar Villanueva. In his groundbreaking book\, Decolonizing Wealth: Indigenous Wisdom to Heal Divides and Restore Balance\, Villanueva showed us past the field’s glamorous\, altruistic façade and into its dark shadows. Now through the Decolonizing Wealth Project and its fund Liberated Capital\, a team of Black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) Philanthropists and Activists led by Villanueva seek to disrupt the existing systems of moving and controlling capital by offering truth\, reconciliation\, and healing from the ails of colonization through education and healing programs\, radical reparative giving\, and narrative change. We envision a world where racial equity has become a societal norm – where new systems ensure everyone can live their best lives\, thrive in their cultures\, and heal from generations of colonial trauma. \n“All our suffering is mutual. All our healing is mutual. All our thriving is mutual.” -Edgar Villanueva \nCarlos Rojas Alvarez serves as the Director of Executive Affairs and Strategic Initiatives at the Decolonizing Wealth Project and Liberated Capital. He is a recognized champion of education justice\, immigrant rights\, and racial equity and brings over a decade of expertise in community organizing\, movement building\, and philanthropy. As an undocumented immigrant\, he began to organize at 16 through the Student Immigrant Movement\, where he eventually became the Campaign Coordinator\, and later the United We Dream Network\, where he played a critical role in coordinating the network’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) registration and Comprehensive Immigration Reform campaigns. Most recently\, Carlos was the Director of Special Projects at Youth on Board\, where he developed\, staffed\, and executed various capacity-building programs for the youth justice movement field and partnered with philanthropy to advance support for healing justice initiatives across the country. \nCarlos currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Schott Foundation for Public Education\, Massachusetts Advocates for Children\, and Resource Generation\, in addition to serving as a consultant and advisor to other philanthropic and organizational partners. \nHe is honored to continue his work of connecting people\, healing divides\, and building community power through the Decolonizing Wealth Project. He currently lives in Brooklyn\, New York with his partner. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time.
