SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Ethics and the Theater: PROTEST by Vaclav Havel

SUMMARY:Ruth Milkman: 'The Resurgence of U.S. Union Organizing: Roots and Future Prospects'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nTo the surprise of many\, union campaigns at iconic companies like Amazon\, Starbucks\, and Apple gained traction in the 2020s. Unionization has also surged – with less fanfare and over a longer period – among young\, college-educated workers in higher education\, journalism\, health care\, and the non-profit sector. The new labor organizing is still too modest to reverse the longstanding decline in union density\, and it faces intransigent employer opposition. But it offers hope of union revival\, led by a new political generation with an anti-capitalist and intersectionality-based worldview. That generation spearheaded Occupy Wall Street\, Black Lives Matter\, and the Sanders campaigns – and now they are organizing unions. \nRUTH MILKMAN is a sociologist of labor and labor movements who has written on a variety of topics involving work and organized labor in the United States\, past and present. Her most recent books are Immigrant Labor and the New Precariat and On Gender\, Labor and Inequality. She is currently Distinguished Professor of Sociology and History at the CUNY Graduate Center and at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies\, where she chairs the Labor Studies Department. For more information see ruthmilkman.info. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Nori Rost \nMonthly Collection: Maui Strong Fund \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required. Masks are optional but encouraged. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. SUMMARY:Climate\, Politics\, and Corporate Power: A Conversation with Steven Donziger
DESCRIPTION:FREE! Hear human rights attorney Steven Donziger discuss his fight for justice at the intersection of climate\, politics\, and corporate power. \nDonations encouraged to benefit the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund. $500 donors receive preferred seating and access to a pre-show reception with Steven\, Michael\, Ayisha\, and Marty. \nJoin us in conversation with noted human rights attorney Steven Donziger about being targeted with the nation’s first corporate prosecution after helping Amazon communities win a historic $10 billion pollution case against Chevron. Steven is a leading thinker operating at the intersection of climate\, law\, and corporate power. He is also the first US attorney to be jailed by a corporation in retaliation for his human rights work. \nSteven will be joined by actor\, writer\, director\, and activist Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos and White Lotus)\, climate justice advocate and one of Time Magazine’s 2023 Women of the Year Ayisha Siddiqa\, and the legendary civil rights attorney Marty Garbus. Marty has represented Steven for years as Chevron attacked him with 60 law firms\, and he formerly represented Nelson Mandela and Vaclav Havel\, among others. \nFREE! Donations encouraged to support the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund.\nClick Here to RSVP! \nMore About Steven \nAfter helping Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted him for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. \nThe judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. \nThe private Chevron prosecutor immediately ordered Steven locked up at home with a 24/7 monitoring device on his ankle\, while his trial was delayed for over two years. He ended up spending 993 days in detention and in prison for a misdemeanor offense with a maximum sentence of 180 days; the judge denied him a jury. \nHe is still the only person ever in the US locked up in retaliation for his human rights work. Chevron used 60 law firms and 2\,000 lawyers to attack Steven. He now enjoys the support of 68 Nobel Laureates and more than 150 bar associations and civil society groups around the world and is considered a leading global spokesperson on the issues of human rights\, climate justice\, Indigenous rights\, and the law. \nLearn more about Steven at FreeDonziger.com. SUMMARY:Interview with Andrew Boyd: Navigating the Climate Crisis with Grief\, Hope\, and Gallows Humor
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nLeader Dr. Joe Chuman interviews Andrew Boyd\, author of I Want a Better Catastrophe. \nWith global warming projected to rocket past the 1.5°C limit\, lifelong activist Andrew Boyd is thrown into a crisis of hope\, and off on a quest to learn how to live with the “impossible news” of our climate doom. Join us as Dr. Joe Chuman interviews Andrew and learn how he maps out our existential options while tackling some familiar dilemmas: “Should I bring kids into such a world?” “Can I lose hope when others can’t afford to?” and “Why am I even recycling?” \nAndrew Boyd is an author\, humorist\, and climate activist. His new book\, I Want a Better Catastrophe: Navigating the Climate Crisis with Grief\, Hope\, and Gallows Humor was published by New Society Press in February 2023. He is currently CEO (Chief Existential Officer) of the Climate Clock\, a global campaign he co-founded that melds art\, science\, technology\, and grassroots organizing to get the world to #ActInTime. Boyd also co-created the grief-storytelling ritual the Climate Ribbon and led the 2000s-era satirical campaign “Billionaires for Bush.” His previous books include Beautiful Trouble (OR Books\, 2012); Daily Afflictions (WW Norton\, 2002)\, and Life’s Little Deconstruction Book (WW Norton\, 1998). Unable to come up with his own lifelong ambition\, he’s been cribbing from Milan Kundera: “to unite the utmost seriousness of question with the utmost lightness of form.” \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection: Maui Strong Fund \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required.
