This series will explain the basis of Dewey’s ethical thought and how it relates to our social role in democracy. Two sessions will be devoted to the humanism of Albert Camus\, with a nod to existential thought and how it can be used for ethical decision-making. \nAbout David Sprintzen\nDr. David Sprintzen is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Long Island University. He is an expert on the thought of John Dewey and published two books on Albert Camus. He is currently completing a book that proposes a philosophical defense of free will. David is a longtime member of the Long Island Ethical Humanist Society. An activist\, David was the founder and\, for 20 years\, the president of the Long Island Progressive Coalition.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Carey Russell: ‘Land Ethics Trilogy\, Part III: Creating a Daily Practice’
DESCRIPTION:The third and final talk explores how we can all strive to integrate land ethics and an ecological conscience into our daily lives\, including those of us who live in an urban environment. The Deep Ecology movement\, or what poet Gary Snyder calls The Practice of the Wild\, endeavors to gain traction at the level of society. But in order to do so\, it much first express itself in the imaginations and routine practices of individuals. Let’s explore in concrete terms how everyone can take immediate steps toward cultivating a closer\, deeper\, and long-term relationship with land and nature. \nAbout Carey Russell\nCarey is a naturalist\, photographer\, and filmmaker. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. This series will explain the basis of Dewey’s ethical thought and how it relates to our social role in democracy.
