SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. \nWhat if there were no gender – if humans only took on male or female characteristics when they went into heat once a month\, and sex was kept separate from everything else? What would a society without the dualism of male and female look like? \nThis tale of an icebound planet abounds with Le Guin’s chilling descriptions of whirling snow and bitter cold. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper: Spelling XthiQ-All with Everyone
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nIn a time where congregational life is in decline and words such as\, community or belonging can feel spoken in vain. How must we speak and live-out the values of Ethical Culture in such a way\, that the sound of it elicits the unthinkable and yet\, meaningful. This platform is an exploration  of love and logic used within language and changing culture.  Believing that Ethic is Everyone\, I invite you to come spell out its meaning\, sound it out with dignity\, and emphasize its vision.  Maybe Ethical Culture rest in the intelligibility action not just the spelling of it names. \nRev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper\, Ph.D. (they/them) is an artist and Cultural Humanist. Both as performer and clergy at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis and within the Ethical Cultural Movement\, their practice utilizes the body as preaching\, decolonial Humanism\, and Black Embodied-Intellectual Thought. Jé’s love for community-building involves the aesthetic ability within the envelopment of Black folk-talk– one of imagination as meaning-making. Their word-working emphasizes human freedom and interconnectedness through embodiment\, intuition\, creativity\, and improvisation. Their most recent production Keep Liv’n expresses the importance of cultural care and self-care. Also\, they are the clerical consultant at the Susquehanna Valley Ethical Society (the Valley) in Central PA. Jé as an artist has directed and created a film entitled\, Humanitas: A Conscious Coloring of Kindness\, along with other cultural programs that inform and inspire the human spirit. Exemplifying a commitment to equity and inclusion through the arts and congregational life\, Jé enjoys working closely together to decenter the stage and share the spotlight of all those voices that make up beloved community. These kinds of transdisciplinary approaches console and agitate communities in re-imagining and re-claiming narratives that honor the inherited worth and dignity within all people– a love-work that Jé is committed to! \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nMonthly Collection: Foundation Beyond Belief Disaster Relief Fund \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. DESCRIPTION:Notice: Thought Salon is on hiatus until further notice. Join our email list for the latest news! \n***** \nAre you searching for the opportunity to “think out loud” in a respectful and supportive space? Do you love asking questions instead of taking things at face value? Do you want to become a more reflective thinker? We revive the lost art of conversation and fine-tune our critical thinking skills\, opening our minds to new perspectives and possibilities! Dilemmas\, brief readings\, life’s questions\, and personal experience are used as a catalyst for dialogue. \nLimited to 20 participants; NYSEC members only. (Except for non-members already in group who will be “grandfathered” in.) If you would like to try the group or become an ongoing member\, please email Maggie Determann at mdetermann@nysec.org. Sandi Sacks moderates. 2nd Tuesdays.

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Charterhouse of Parma by Stendhal
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. \nStendhal narrates a young aristocrat’s adventures in Napoleon’s army and in the court of Parma\, illuminating in the process the whole cloth of European history. \nThis yarn is an epic and yet intimate tale of political intrigue and erotic frustration. Almost since the moment it appeared it has been considered a masterpiece. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.
