SUMMARY:Fight Voter Suppression and Protect Abortion: Reclaim Our Vote Postcard Writing Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Fighting voter suppression is both more important and more challenging than ever\, and directly engaging voters is crucial to protecting and expanding our democracy. \nBring a friend and join the Society’s Social Service Board for our next Reclaim Our Vote postcard writing gathering! So far\, our team has prepared postcards to help thousands of voters learn about\, and then beat\, voter suppression in their states. \nNext up: Georgia and Texas. \nPostcards created at this gathering will be mailed to lists of targeted voters in October\, ensuring they arrive before election day. \nCan’t Make This Gathering? You Can Still Help!\nSimply email Social Service Board chair Janet Rose at rov.nysec@gmail.com to place an order for postcard supplies in multiples of 20. Supply packets can be picked up at the Society Monday-Thursday\, 10am-4pm. \nSupply packets include your requested quantity of postcards\, labels\, addresses\, and instructions. The cost is .60 per postcard with stamps\, or .10 per postcard without stamps. Payment info will be sent to you when you request the packet. \nPostcards will be targeting voters in Georgia and Texas\, and won’t be mailed until early to mid-October\, so consider taking a many as you think you can complete before then! \nRSVP\nPlease RSVP to rov.nysec@gmail.com if you plan to attend. \nThank you for whatever help you can give! For questions\, please contact rov.nysec@gmail.com. \nAbout Reclaim Our Vote\nReclaim Our Vote is a campaign of the Center for Common Ground\, a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to empower under-represented voters to fully participate in elections. To support that mission we provide voter education on how to monitor voter registration status\, find voting locations (vote centers\, dropboxes and voting precincts) as well as county contacts for local boards of elections or registrars. \nFor more information about ROV\, please read the guidelines for postcard writers and watch this short ROV training video above.

SUMMARY:Carey Russell: 'Land Ethics Trilogy\, Part I: The Making of a Young Naturalist'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nThe first of three talks exploring the concept of land ethics\, as established in the modern era by Aldo Leopold in his perennial classic A Sand County Almanac. Land ethics expand our ethical frameworks\, historically limited to human relationships in Western culture\, to include nature. The first talk will focus on discovering and cultivating land ethics within our own personal narratives and daily lives. Later talks in the series will address the integration of these values into society and the broader philosophical implications of these values\, which we call deep ecology. \nThis talk will be followed by a tree walk in Central Park at 1:00 and an online land ethics book club from selected readings on the evenings of Sept. 25th and October 16th. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Carey Russell\nCarey is a naturalist\, photographer\, and filmmaker. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. SUMMARY:Central Park Tree Walk with Dendro Lab’s Carey Russell
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to cultivate a closer and more familiar relationship with our neighborhood trees? If so\, set off on the right foot with a leisurely walk in Central Park to learn the key concepts used in dendrology\, which you know more commonly as the simple practice of tree identification. Each species of tree has its own unique characteristics and behavior\, which make it surprisingly easy to identify – but only for those who know what they are looking for! If you’re interested in starting or furthering your practice as a naturalist\, learning our local trees is a great place to start. A walk through the park or even around the block will never be quite the same again. \nYour guide for this one-hour presentation will be today’s Sunday Platform guest Carey Russell\, a local dendrologist and founding director of The Dendro Lab\, an organization dedicated to sharing the environmental literacy of trees. \nTo Join\nMeet at the Society Meeting House lobby at 1:00pm – 2 W 64th St. (at the corner of Central Park West).

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Ethics and the Theater: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:Free! \nDon’t miss our Ethics and the Theater team’s annual Summer Sunday Platform featuring a staged reading of A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-finalist Love Letters: \nAndrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner\, both born to wealth and position\, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached\, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school\, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” \nWhile Andy is off at war Melissa marries\, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries\, becomes a successful attorney\, gets involved in politics and\, eventually\, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile\, her marriage in tatters\, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos\, drinks more than she should\, and becomes estranged from her children. \nEventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair\, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter\, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death\, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant\, and gave to\, each other over the years—physically apart\, perhaps\, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. \nMonthly Collection\nProject Renewal \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
