SUMMARY:Progressive International: New International Economic Order 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:50 years ago\, the nations of the Third World\, having won their independence from colonialism\, came together to propose a vision for sovereign development and international cooperation in trade\, finance\, and technology — and won a UN Declaration for the Establishment of a New International Economic Order at the General Assembly. \nToday\, we are again in a moment of rapid geopolitical transformation with the end of the unipolar domination of the United States — but we lack a common vision of the multipolar world that is now in formation. How will we confront the crises of climate change\, viral pandemic\, and extreme poverty that threaten billions of lives and livelihoods across the planet? \nOver the past two years\, the Progressive International has convened scholars\, diplomats\, and policymakers in a series of debates and discussions to answer these questions. Their deliberations yielded a clear strategy to ‘assert Southern power’ toward a new global contract on sovereign development\, as set out in the Havana Declaration delivered at the closing ceremony of the inaugural Congress on the New International Economic Order. \n“The Congress recognizes that economic liberation will not be granted\, but must be seized. Our vision can only be realized through the formation of new and alternative institutions to share critical technology\, tackle sovereign debt\, drive development finance\, and face future pandemics together\,” read the Declaration. \nSince then\, the Havana Group has been hard at work to develop that vision into a comprehensive Program of Action on the New International Economic Order: a document with the clarity\, audacity\, and pragmatism to realize sovereign and sustainable development in the twenty-first century. \nNow\, we are planning the launch of that Program of Action in a special ceremony at the New York Society for Ethical Culture — and we would be honored to welcome you there\, alongside distinguished speakers such as Isabella Weber\, Jayati Ghosh\, Adam Tooze\, and Branko Milanovic. \nThe event\, coinciding with the UN General Assembly\, will not only celebrate the legacy of the New International Economic Order on the occasion of its 50th anniversary — but also revive its tradition of robust programmatic thinking to redress the crises of our day. \nSpeakers\nIsabella Weber • Jayati Ghosh • Adam Tooze • Branko Milanović • Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò • and Special Guests from Across the G77 \nRSVP\nFREE! RSVP Here

He has worked with 350NYC and other local and national groups\, and is currently co-facilitator of Third Act NYC\, as well as Third Act Lawyers. Pat has been particularly interested in the intersection of law and climate advocacy\, and in the role of the faith community in the climate movement. He was instrumental in organizing faith participation in the 2014 Climate March that brought more than 350\,000 people to the streets of NYC\, and more recently has been involved in the elders’ actions that have been part of “The Summer of Heat\,” a months-long series of protests targeting Citigroup\, the world’s largest financer of new fossil-fuel infrastructure projects. He lives on the Upper West Side with his wife\, Susan Gargiulo\, and is active in local Democratic politics. \nKeanu Arpels-Josiah (he/him)\, 19\, is a youth climate justice organizer and activist based on Munsee Lenape land in what is called New York City. He’s been a core organizer and the policy co-lead with Fridays For Future NYC where he’s advocated for action on climate justice and legislation on the local\, state\, federal\, and international governmental levels. His work helped lead to the passage of the Climate Superfund Act in 2024 in the NY state legislature\, he’s also organized on congestion pricing among other policy issues\, garnering appearances on news media from Democracy Now! to statewide radio. In 2023\, he was one of the lead organizers of the March To End Fossil Fuels organizing with a multigenerational intersectional coalition to plan and mobilize for a 75\,000-person march in N.Y.C. calling on President Biden to stop expanding and phase out fossil fuels. Building from the March\, he attended conferences including COP28 in Dubai\, U.A.E. as well as the U.N. Climate Ambition Summit where he pushed the Biden Administration on the same. This work has been covered by outlets from NPR\, POLITICO\, Sierra Magazine\, NBC News\, and the front page of the New York Times. He’s currently a first-year college student at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where he’s still involved in organizing from supporting Fridays For Future NYC and Sunrise Movement NYC to preparing for the November general election. \nMichael Greenberg is the founder and executive director of Climate Defiance. His work has been profiled in the Guardian\, New Republic\, Rolling Stone and New York Times. Michael graduated from Columbia University with a BA in economics. \nAlice Hu is Senior Climate Campaigner at New York Communities for Change. She was a lead organizer of the Summer of Heat on Wall Street campaign and the March to End Fossil Fuels in 2023. Her campaign and direct action work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The Washington Post\, and other local\, national\, and international outlets\, and – on one fun occasion – satirized on Saturday Night Live. \nJohn Mark Rozendaal has enjoyed a musical career specializing in teaching and performing stringed instrument music from the baroque and renaissance eras. As founding Artistic Director of Chicago Baroque Ensemble\, he performed and led seven seasons of subscription concerts\, educational programs\, radio broadcasts\, and recordings for the Cedille and Centaur labels. Mr. Rozendaal served as principal violoncellist of The City Musick and Basically Bach\, and has performed both solo and continuo roles with many period and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra: and taught at Princeton University. Since 2022 John Mark has devoted his efforts to activism for climate justice\, taking a leading role in Extinction Rebellion\, and participating in actions with Summer of Heat and Climate Defiance. \nLiv Senghor is an organizer and artist based in Brooklyn\, NY. She has experience organizing against fossil fuel funding\, police brutality\, and American militarism at home and abroad. She was a lead organizer with the Summer of Heat campaign and is the incoming campaign manager at Stop the Money Pipeline. \nBiologist\, author\, and cancer survivor\, Sandra Steingraber\, Ph.D. writes about climate change\, ecology\, and the links between human health and the environment. Recognized for her ability to serve as a two-way translator between scientists and activists\, Dr. Steingraber has keynoted conferences on human health and the environment throughout the United States and Canada and has been invited to lecture at many medical schools\, hospitals\, and universities–including Harvard\, Yale\, Cornell\, Columbia\, and the Woods Hole Research Center. She has testified in the European Parliament\, at the European Commission\, before the President’s Cancer Panel\, and has participated in briefings to Congress\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, and before United Nations delegates in Geneva\, Switzerland \nAfter environmental and human rights attorney Steven Donziger helped Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted him for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. The judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. The private Chevron prosecutor immediately ordered Steven locked up at home with a 24/7 monitoring device on his ankle\, while his trial was delayed for over two years. He ended up spending 993 days in detention and in prison for a misdemeanor offense with a maximum sentence of 180 days; the judge denied him a jury. He is still the only person ever in the US locked up in retaliation for his human rights work. Chevron used 60 law firms and 2\,000 lawyers to attack Steven. He now enjoys the support of 68 Nobel Laureates and more than 150 bar associations and civil society groups around the world and is considered a leading global spokesperson on the issues of human rights\, climate justice\, Indigenous rights\, and the law. SUMMARY:The Language of Climate Politics in the 2024 Election
DESCRIPTION:FREE and Open to The Public for Climate Week NYC! \nHow should we talk about climate change in the crucible of the 2024 elections? People who care about the future will cherish this smart volume\, which will turn them into far more effective advocates; it is a genuine gift to the world.”\n—Bill McKibben\, author of The End of Nature \n“This is a brave\, compelling\, and necessary book. Guenther blasts away the most persistent myths of the climate crisis…Guenther knows her subject and is a fabulous bullshit detector. Reading The Language of Climate Politics is an excellent way to arm yourself for the fight for a better future.”\n—Jeff Goodell\, author of the New York Times bestseller The Heat Will Kill You First \n“In this genius book\, Dr. Genevieve Guenther takes the whole overwhelming universe of fossil fuel propaganda and distills it to six key words and one key narrative\, exposing the rhetorical tricks used so effectively by the various powers obstructing climate action and thus ridding them of their power entirely.”\n—Amy Westervelt\, Investigative Climate Journalist\, Founder\, Drilled Media \n“The primary obstacle to tackling the climate crisis is political\, not technological. And the political battle has become a war of words. In this important book\, Genevieve Guenther navigates the battlefield with insight and wit\, expertly elucidating the ways in which the modern climate discourse has been polluted by bad actors with an agenda of business-as-usual dependence on fossil fuels.”\n—Michael E. SUMMARY:Cause Célèbre Productions Presents: Someone is Sending a Message
DESCRIPTION:Join Ethical NYC and Cause Celebre Productions for an unforgettable play with Broadway actors and Tony Award-winners including Roberta Wallach\, Penny Fuller\, and James Naughton! \nWritten by Susan Charlotte • Directed by Antony Marsellis \nSomeone is Sending a Message is based on a true story of persistence and hope in the face of adversity–a story that revolves around a courageous young man named Nick Springer. It’s also the story of a painter named Sheila\, a friend of Nick who is at a crossroads in her art and in her life. \nSuddenly she receives a phone call: What do you mean Nick is dead? \nThe same Nick she spoke with two weeks ago\, who she had known since he was 13. The same Nick who had contracted Meningitis at camp and\, despite quadruple amputations\, became a Paralympic Gold Medalist\, an international advocate for life\, survival\, vaccination\, and a national hero. Nick never let any obstacle get in his way\, but while swimming in a friend’s pool his heart gave out. \nSheila turns to Facebook to learn more about what happened\, where hundreds of people have shared messages. Strangely\, every time she tries to post her own\, words appear on her screen: \nSomeone is sending a message. \nSo begins Sheila’s surrealistic journey\, so affected by Nick’s extraordinary life and unexpected death that she begins to face the obstacles in her own life\, make sense of its twists and turns\, and come to terms with the death of her brother\, who was also in his 30s. Sheila stares at the screen as feelings from her past appear alongside the messages from Nick’s friends\, the two worlds overlapping. Perhaps there is a message for her. \nSuddenly one appears: \nLife goes on. With or without you. You can either shut down or join in. \nIt’s from Nick! Sheila turns and faces her incomplete canvas\, and is able\, at last\, to add the final brushstrokes. \nTickets\n$25 – Click to Purchase on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:American Ethical Union All-Societies Platform: Building an Intergenerational Movement for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Watch online or stop by our in-person watch party in Ceremonial Hall! \nAs Climate Week NYC comes to a close\, a panel convenes to look at the unique intergenerational nature of the Climate Justice Movement. Humans of all ages are teaming up to meet the ethical imperative of Climate Justice and to grow this movement. This panel will explore the intergenerational modes and methods that youth and elders have employed\, in connecting across their generational divides for this global movement. \nDialogue will aim to reveal some of the struggles\, frustrations\, joys and learnings from this cross generational collaboration. While different generations may be coming from different points of reference\, different inspirational motivation\, and different stylistic tendencies\, how are they implementing solidarity\, and guiding themselves modalities of curious and compassionate interactivity and care\, with a common mission? In climate justice circles\, this summer has been “the summer of heat.” How are they each navigating the ethical dilemmas they confront in the world through this movement? \nPanelists represent Third Act and Fridays For Future (two organizations that Ethical NYC partners with\, to support this Climate Justice Movement)\, as well as No Brooklyn Pipeline\, and Climate Families. \nAfter the platform\, there will be zoom break out groups for the audience to gather in small discussion groups\, and look at how your communities foster intergenerational connection and collaboration\, and also how your communities approach the global ethical imperative of climate justice involvement. \nPanelists moderated by AEU President and Science Researcher Khandra Sears include: Helen Mancini (high school ~ Fridays for Future)\, Adérìnsọ́lá Marian Babawale (college ~ Fridays for Future Alum\, No Brooklyn Pipeline)\, Pat Almonrode (Third Act)\, Eliza Clark (Climate Families)\, and Monica Weiss (Third Act). \nThis forum is open to all humans\, so we ask all interested people to amplify it on social media platforms. All Ethical Societies are encouraged to publicize this event to their communities\, and even host watch parties if possible. \nRSVP to Watch on Zoom\nClick here to register for this webinar \nPanelists\nHelen Mancini is a senior at Stuyvesant High School and a climate and social justice organizer with Fridays For Future NYC where she has planned four global school strikes and many local rallies. She was also a speaker and lead organizer for the 2023 March To End Fossil Fuels which mobilized 75\,000 people. \nAdérìnsọ́lá Marian Babawale (She/Her/Hers) is a 22-year-old Abolitionist & college student majoring in Global environmental studies liberal arts. She is a poet\, sustainable fashionista and artist who also considers herself a steward of the land and a solution based organizer\, advocating for Eco & housing justice as well as food sovereignty. Ade’s climate activism has included involvement with FFF and the No Brooklyn Pipeline Movement and she has given speeches and taught climate songs at climate rallies and marches. \nPat Almonrode is an attorney and a longtime climate activist. \nEliza Clark is from New York City and lives in Manhattan with her husband and three daughters. She was inspired to take an active part in the climate movement by the example of her teenage daughter Helen Mancini who is a lead organizer with Fridays for Future NYC. Her background is in education and academia. She has a PhD from Harvard University in American Studies and her areas of research include the 19th century women’s movement and the intersection of social and political movements with family life. She has taught history and writing at both the college and high school levels; she has also spent many years as a primary parent and caregiver. She joined Climate Families NYC in 2022 and now serves as one of its volunteer Co-Chairs. She regularly participates in climate actions with her 6-year-old who has befriended many other kids in the group. She and Helen wrote about the urgent need for parents to get involved in climate activism in Teen Vogue. \nMonica Weiss is a long time Ethical Culture member\, retired educator and climate activist. Since retiring from teaching she has trained as a Climate Reality Leader\, completed the Project Drawdown Workshop\, and is on the 350NYC Steering Committee and the Third Act NYC Coordinating Committee. Committed to empowering youth\, Monica has focused much of her activism on creating welcoming spaces for many youth groups to meet and organize at New York Society for Ethical Culture including Fridays for Future\, since 2019. \nPanel Moderator: Khandra Sears\nKhandra Sears is the American Ethical Union’s Board President. Khandra’s relationship with Ethical Culture began as she pursued an undergraduate degree in microbiology and began to question what faith and the Bible meant to her. As she moved to Baltimore to earn a PhD in Microbiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM)\, she started to attend Baltimore Ethical Society Platforms and went on to join them as a member. Currently\, Khandra works at UMSOM as part of a research team that develops live oral vaccines primarily against non-typhoidal strains of Salmonella enterica but also against other enteric bacteria. Since gastroenteric infections are still a leading cause of illness and death in children in resource-limited regions\, she takes pride in the fact that she is working to address this issue and ultimately improve human lives.
