SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Carey Russell: 'Land Ethics Trilogy\, Part II'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nThe second of three talks exploring the concept of land ethics\, as established in the modern era by Aldo Leopold in his perennial classic A Sand County Almanac. Land ethics expand our ethical frameworks\, historically limited to human relationships in Western culture\, to include nature. The first talk focused on discovering and cultivating land ethics within our own personal narratives and daily lives. This talk\, and the third\, will address the integration of these values into society and the broader philosophical implications of these values\, which we call deep ecology. \nThis talk will be followed by a tree walk in Central Park at 1:00. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Carey Russell\nCarey is a naturalist\, photographer\, and filmmaker. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. He lives in New York City where he can often be found botanizing in Central Park and leading tree walks to pass this literacy onto others. \nWatch Carey’s August 2024 Sunday Platform: ‘Land Ethics Trilogy Pt. SUMMARY:Central Park Tree Walk with The Dendro Lab’s Carey Russell
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to cultivate a closer and more familiar relationship with our neighborhood trees? If so\, set off on the right foot with a leisurely walk in Central Park to learn the key concepts used in dendrology\, which you know more commonly as the simple practice of tree identification. Each species of tree has its own unique characteristics and behavior\, which make it surprisingly easy to identify – but only for those who know what they are looking for! If you’re interested in starting or furthering your practice as a naturalist\, learning our local trees is a great place to start. A walk through the park or even around the block will never be quite the same again. \nYour guide for this one-hour presentation will be today’s Sunday Platform guest Carey Russell\, a local dendrologist and founding director of The Dendro Lab\, an organization dedicated to sharing the environmental literacy of trees. \nTo Join\nMeet at the Society Meeting House lobby at 1:00pm – 2 W 64th St. (at the corner of Central Park West).

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Hamilton Nolan: How the Labor Movement Can Save America (and Why It Hasn't Yet)
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nAmerica’s 50-year-long rise in economic inequality is the big crisis underlying most of our nation’s social and political problems. Organized labor is the single most effective tool that regular people can use to reverse this inequality. Yet labor unions have been on the decline for decades. Can the labor movement seize its current moment of popularity as an opportunity to rebuild worker power and revive the American dream? Yes. But will it? That’s up to us. \nNov. 3 Access Notice: Due to the NYC Marathon Central Park West will be closed\, and all in-person attendees must enter our block at the intersection of Broadway and W 64th St. Please expect crowded sidewalks and allow yourself extra time to arrive. \nAbout Hamilton’s new book\, The Hammer: Power\, Inequality\, and the Struggle for the Soul of Labor’: \nA timely\, in-depth\, and vital exploration of the American labor movement and its critical place in our society and politics today\, from acclaimed labor reporter Hamilton Nolan. \nInequality is America’s biggest problem. Unions are the single strongest tool that working people have to fix it. Organized labor has been in decline for decades. Yet it sits today at a moment of enormous opportunity. In the wake of the pandemic\, a highly visible wave of strikes and new organizing campaigns have driven the popularity of unions to historic highs. The simmering battle inside of the labor movement over how to tap into its revolutionary potential—or allow it to be squandered—will determine the economic and social course of American life for years to come. \nIn chapters that span the country\, Nolan shows readers the actual places where labor and politics meld. He highlights how organized labor can and does wield power effectively: a union that dominates Las Vegas and is trying to scale nationally; a successful decades-long campaign to organize California’s child care workers; the human face of a surprising strike of factory workers trying to preserve their pathway to the middle class. Throughout\, Nolan follows Sara Nelson\, the fiery and charismatic head of the flight attendants’ union\, as she struggles with how (and whether) to assert herself as a national leader\, to try to fix what is broken. The Hammer draws the line from forgotten workplaces in rural West Virginia to Washington’s halls of power and shows how labor solidarity can utterly transform American politics—if it can first transform itself. \nA labor journalist for more than a decade\, Nolan helped unionize his own industry. The Hammer is a urgent on-the-ground excavation of the past\, present\, and future of the American labor movement. \nWatch Online\nRSVP Here to Join Via Zoom \nAbout Hamilton Nolan\nHamilton Nolan is a labor journalist who writes regularly for In These Times magazine and The Guardian. He has written about labor\, politics\, and class war for The New York Times\, the Washington Post\, Gawker\, Splinter\, and other publications. He was the longest-serving writer in Gawker’s history\, and was a leader in unionizing Gawker Media in 2015. Hamilton is a proud member of the Writers Guild of America\, East. He lives in Brooklyn. \nMonthly Collection\nMarch for Our Lives \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: Why Progressive Movements Fail
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nThe U.S. has seen a significant decline in civic engagement. As a result\, well-organized and well-funded groups have increasingly dominated public discourse. This shift has led to notable outcomes\, such as the banning of books\, restrictions on students learning about slavery\, multiple efforts to dismantle the Voting Rights Act\, and limitations on women’s reproductive rights. These developments have been linked to the decline of progressive civic organizations that traditionally countered these trends. How did this happen\, and what steps can be taken to restore civic engagement and protect our democracy? \nRSVP to Watch Online\nClick here to RSVP on Zoom \nAbout Curt Collier\nCurt Collier is the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and a passionate advocate for community redevelopment. He works as a consultant\, helping nonprofits enhance their capacity to make a positive impact. Additionally\, Collier is a professor of Ethics and Ethics in Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and serves as a Community Planning Specialist for the National Park Service. He leads various initiatives\, including job training programs for New York City schools\, support for environmental nonprofits in New Jersey\, and projects aimed at improving scientific literacy among young adults. Collier is also the consulting Leader for the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley\, and the Austin Ethical Society. \nMonthly Collection\nMarch for Our Lives \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Philip Lindsay: The Freedom to Assemble
DESCRIPTION:When most of us think of the First Amendment\, we think of free speech. But what do we make of the freedom to assemble? Whatever lies ahead for American Democracy\, it will not thrive unless we are meeting in person\, building relationships across division\, and negotiating common ground. What role might citizens’ assemblies play in the years ahead for those committed to self-government? \nCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion\, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech\, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble\, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. \nNotice: Our original program for this week\, a discussion with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\, has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon. \nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP and Join on Zoom \nAbout Philip Lindsay\nPhilip Lindsay leads the Democracy Innovation Hub at the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College. Over the past three years\, the Hub has hosted annual national gatherings for advocates and practitioners of citizens’ assemblies in the United States. These gatherings led to the first major use of sortition in New York City in 2023 as well as an assembly planned for Ft. Collins\, Colorado. Philip co-taught the course “Democratic Innovation and Citizen Lotteries: from Ancient Athens to the French Climate Assembly\,” which is available online. He also organizes the “Doing Democracy Differently Teacher Fellowship” which trains educators on how to bring deliberative democracy into the classroom.
