DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \n“I got myself ready and went to the Ethical Culture Society at the Century Club to hear Prof. Josiah Royce on “Race Questions and Prejudice.’ I went early… I did [before] it was crowded – but such an audience! CULTURE written on every line of their faces – an audience as you would so enjoy.” -Mary Locke (Alain Locke’s mother) \nMary Locke writes Culture with a capital “C”. Culture here is more than an elitist escape for Black Victorians and Intellectual Freethinkers at the turn of the century\, it is the cultivation of an ideal society\, one with black thriving futures. This kind of Cultural vision within our pre-dated Humanist community can become a blueprint for people on the margins rooted in oppression within a precarious existence. With this in mind\, let us contemplate Humanism’s response to Culture. How does Culture inform our Humanist practices and values? What are the lines of hospitality written on the faces we see? \nEthical NYC Food Drive: Please bring a can of protein–tuna\, chicken\, beans\, etc.–a jar of nut butter\, or box of pasta to Platform to support our Food Insecurity Initiative. Spices and cooking oils are requested as well\, as they are not covered by SNAP and the price of cooking oil has skyrocketed.  \nAn educator for 10 years in the inner-city schools of New York City\, Washington D.C and Baltimore\, Maryland\, Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper was challenged by the prevalent divide the black and brown community still faced despite their solidarity in culture. Much of his teaching was dedicated to incorporating unconventional schools of thought—expeditionary learning\, performance studies\, singing chants\, and helping students develop self-esteem by creating a micro-community that could advocate their own needs. \nJé completed a Master of Professional Studies in Arts and Cultural Management at Pratt Institute. Most recently\, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology with a concentration in Interfaith and Interreligious Engagement at Union Theological Seminary. Last year Jé was ordained as an Interfaith minister through New Seminary\, a practicum-based program through which he holds his license. DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in biology raise expectations for patients and families waiting for cures. Unfortunately\, the path from breakthroughs to drugs is torturous and unpredictable. Looking at two prominent examples\, RNA interference and genome editing\, we can extract some common themes and key lessons applicable to future discoveries. \nAbout Our Speaker \nDavid Bumcrot\, PhD\, is Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of Research at CAMP4 Therapeutics\, where he oversees the Biology\, Data Science and Discovery teams. \nPrior to joining CAMP4\, Dr. Bumcrot led groups at innovative biotech companies advancing novel technologies towards clinical development. He was one of the first employees at Alnylam pharmaceuticals where he spent ten years working to make RNA interference-based drugs a reality for multiple indications\, including key contributions to a first-in-class systemically administered siRNA therapeutic tested in an oncology clinical trial. Dr. Bumcrot then moved on to Editas Medicine where his team established the company’s initial therapeutic programs utilizing groundbreaking CRISPR technology. \nDr. Bumcrot received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:AEU Salon on Biocentrism w/ Curt Collier (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Eighty to ninety years after its founding\, Ethical Culture saw the rise of Humanism as a new organizing set of ideas in which. to describe the aspirations of the Ethical Movement. It can be argued that this was very different from Adler’s original philosophical orientation and revealed the triumph of “Deweyism” over “Adleriansim.” Some Ethical Culture congregations went even further afield\, stating that Ethical Culture and Unitarianism were more aligned in thought. Sixty years later\, we have to ask whether Humanism has served our ideology well. \nFor the past 20 years\, Curt Collier\, the newly installed Leader of the Bergen Ethical Society and presenter for this upcoming salon\, challenged the notion that congregations need to be aligned with Humanism\, and has called for a return to some of Adler’s original thought. He argues that Ethical Biocentrism is more consistent with Adler’s Ethical Culture than Ethical Humanism\, and therefore\, is a better model going forward. This salon will cover these topics\, including a discussion of what is Ethical Biocentrism and what an Ethical Culture congregation who adopts this philosophy would do differently. \nAbout our Presenter:\n\nAn Ethical Culture Leader for over 25 years\, Curt Collier has served five Ethical Societies\, and is a co-founder of the Ethical Society of Austin. He is currently the Leader of the Bergen Ethical Culture Society and a Consulting Leader for the Silicon Valley Society. For more information about our youth and family programming\, please visit www.ethical.nyc/youth. \n\nYoung Ethical Explorers is our Humanist Sunday school\, designed for youngsters from ages 4 to 13\, and takes place concurrent with our Sunday Platform meetings. Sessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nRSVP is essential to guarantee your place and for planning purposes. If you are enrolled for the season or are members of Ethical NYC your spot is guaranteed.
