SUMMARY:CreativeMornings NYC: Maria Popova on Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Ethical NYC is thrilled to host CreativeMornings NYC. CreativeMornings is a global breakfast lecture series for the creative community. CreativeMornings chapters meet once a month\, typically on a Friday morning\, for a cup of coffee and an inspiring talk featuring New York’s most inspiring and influential doers. Events are free of charge and will always be. \nFREE! RSVP Here (In-Person and Livestream) \nMaria Popova is a reader and a wonderer reckoning with the meaning of it all in writing. The Marginalian is the record of the reckoning — a one-woman labor of love\, exploring what it means to live a tender\, thoughtful life of purpose and gladness\, wonder-smitten by reality. Founded in 2006 as an email to seven friends under the outgrown name Brain Pickings and since included in the Library of Congress permanent web archive of culturally valuable materials\, it remains a chronicle of her ongoing becoming — intellectually\, creatively\, spiritually\, poetically — drawn from her extended marginalia on the search for meaning across science\, art\, philosophy\, and the various other tendrils of human thought and feeling; a private inquiry shimmering with the ultimate question\, the great quickening of wonderment that binds us all: What is all this? \nFeaturing Music by Joan as Police Woman \nJoan as Police Woman started out studying to be a classically trained violinist\, then expanded the terrain and role of the violin as she became a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, songwriter\, composer\, and producer. She has released ten critically acclaimed albums and has performed and collaborated with Anthony and the Johnsons\, Gorillaz\, John Cale\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Lou Reed\, David Sylvian\, Rufus Wainwright\, and a constellation of other beloved musicians. Her latest album\, The Solution Is Restless\, is a collaboration with legendary drummer and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen. She lives in Brooklyn and loves the world. \nLocal Partners \n\n\nVenue Partner — The New York Society for Ethical Culture Founded in 1876 by Dr. Felix Adler\, The New York Society for Ethical Culture is the cornerstone of the Ethical Movement. SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series w/ Joe Chuman: 'We Are Not One: A History of America's Fight over Israel' with Eric Alterman (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Puffin Cultural Forum. For more details\, visit this link. \nFights about the fate of the state of Israel\, and the Zionist movement that gave birth to it\, have long been a staple of both Jewish and American political culture. But despite these arguments’ significance to American politics\, American Jewish life\, and to Israel itself\, no one has ever systematically examined their history and explained why they matter. \nIn We Are Not One\, historian Eric Alterman traces this debate from its nineteenth-century origins. Following Israel’s 1948–1949 War of Independence (called the “nakba” or “catastrophe” by Palestinians)\, few Americans\, including few Jews\, paid much attention to Israel or the challenges it faced. Following the 1967 Six-Day War\, however\, almost overnight support for Israel became the primary component of American Jews’ collective identity. Over time\, Jewish organizations joined forces with conservative Christians and neoconservative pundits and politicos to wage a tenacious fight to define Israel’s image in the US media\, popular culture\, Congress\, and college campuses. Deeply researched\, We Are Not One reveals how our consensus on Israel and Palestine emerged and why\, today\, it is fracturing. \n \n\nAbout Eric Alterman\nFormer Nation media columnist Eric Alterman is a CUNY distinguished professor of English at Brooklyn College\, and the author of 12 books\, including We Are Not One: A History of America’s Fight Over Israel\, just published by Basic Books. \nAbout the Interview Series & Dr. Chuman\nThe Puffin Cultural Forum is proud to present our “Puffin Interview Series with Dr. Joe Chuman.” On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. Dr. Chuman recently retired from his post as the leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County after forty-six years. He has taught at Columbia University\, Hunter College\, and the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, The Hill and many other periodicals.

SUMMARY:Steven Hassan: Two Years After the Violent Coup Attempt
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online!\n\nCult expert Steven Hassan\, author of The Cult of Trump\, joins us to examine developments since the January 6\, 2021 attack on the Capitol\, and discuss what we can do to stop those with wealth and influence\, both here and overseas\, who wish to propel the world into authoritarian darkness. \nThe U.S. government is in a lot of trouble: 121 Republican politicians were complicit in trying to stop the transfer of power to President Joe Biden\, the legitimate winner of the 2020 election. The Department of Justice has a special prosecutor looking into charges against Trump\, but the public remains largely ignorant of what a psyop is (think of QAnon)\, what undue influence is (brainwashing)\, and what we can do going forward to stop the plans of those with wealth and influence who wish to destroy the United States and propel the world into authoritarian darkness. \nMany people are now waking up to the reality that they were\, in fact\, believers in The Cult of Trump. However\, the media has largely censored the information in my book\, while groups including Vladimir Putin\, The Family\, Opus Dei\, the New Apostolic Reformation\, Benjamin Netanyahu\, and others have worked to undermine the rule of law\, overthrow established law and legal precedent like Roe v. Wade\, and further tear down the separation of church and state. \nSteven Hassan\, Ph.D. is a mental health professional who specializes in helping people to recover from mind control as well as helping loved ones to exit without coercion. He has been helping people leave destructive relationships and organizations since 1976 after he was rescued from the infamous cult\, the Moonies. Hassan directs the Freedom of Mind Resource Center\, a counseling and publishing organization outside of Boston\, teaches at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and recently received his doctorate from Fielding University. He is the author of The Cult of Trump\, Combating Cult Mind Control\, Releasing the Bonds\, and Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People\, Cults and Beliefs. \nAfterwards\, join us at 2:00pm for a free performance of the acclaimed play One With the Current by Daniel Damiano! \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend Platform in-person at this time. Mask wearing is required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nMonthly Collection: M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.
