SUMMARY:Derek Tesser: Perspectives of the Chocó Rainforest from Space to the Understory
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThe most biodiverse and threatened tropical rainforest in South America is not the Amazon. While less renowned\, the Chocó Biodiversity Hotspot along the Pacific Coast of Ecuador and Colombia lost 98% of its primary forest due to industrial oil palm expansion and illegal logging in the last few decades. \nYet hope is not lost. A complex history weaves together diverse cultures throughout the Chocó. Today\, local communities alongside conservation efforts promote sustainable cultivation of the Chocó. \nWith a combined focus on biodiversity\, music and culture\, the Itapoa Project has advanced scientific understanding alongside amplifying the voices of local communities within this unique and delicate ecoregion. \nDerek Tesser is a Lecturer of Science at CUNY’s Guttman Community College since the college opened in 2012. Derek’s background is in history\, biology and environmental science\, and he holds degrees from New York University and Brandeis University. \nDerek has led multiple study abroad expeditions with NYC community college students to the Chocó rainforest in Ecuador. These trips explore the Chocó’s rich biodiversity and investigate anthropogenic causes of deforestation and land use change. Derek also works with the Itapoa Project to cultivate sustainable cacao farms for local chocolate production in the Chocó. \nDerek is completing a PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center with a focus on satellite imagery techniques to study tropical ecosystems and biodiversity. There are no right or wrong answers\, just your individual response shared in a contemplative atmosphere. \nA colloquy led by Matthew Benson \nAs the authoritative modern text on the subject\, “Attached: the New Science of Adult Attachment” by Amir Levine\, M.D. and Rachel S.F. Heller M.A. presents\, based on the research of psychologist Mary Ainsworth and psychiatrist John Bowlby in the 1950s\, our adult attachment style is developed in early childhood in response to our relationships with our earliest caregivers and evolves depending on our past trauma\, self awareness and life experiences. DESCRIPTION:This event was previously scheduled for September 7. \nSnug Harbor opened 1833 as a sailors’ retirement home. After the home moved away in 1976\, it became the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden\, a beautiful space used by various local arts organizations. \nThere are 26 buildings in a variety of 19th century architectural styles (Greek Revival\, Beaux Arts\, Italianate\, and Victorian) in this 83-acre park on Staten Island’s north shore. We’ll walk through the tall bamboo forest and explore the Chinese Scholar’s Garden. \nLunch will follow at the charming\, outdoor Harbor Eats in the park. We can explore some of the other sights on this large botanical garden before heading home. In this platform cantata\, Dr. Rost will explore the many reasons that can lead people to attempt (and in many cases\, complete) suicide and how we can help ourselves and others find a way through the shadows. \nPrior to joining the New York Society for Ethical Culture as its newest Leader\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Before that\, she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church\, a queer Christian denomination\, for almost 20 years. She is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts.
