SUMMARY:Israel - Palestine Discussion with Leader Dr. Joe Chuman (Members Only)
DESCRIPTION:From Leader Dr. Joe Chuman: \nI had the unusual opportunity to visit Israel last week. I traveled with a small group and met with representatives of Israel’s civil society. We also met with academics\, journalists\, a brother of a man held hostage\, and a soldier wounded in Gaza. We also visited a town that was a site of the Hamas massacre. \nAs many others\, I am very disturbed by the massacre of October 7th and the ensuing warfare. I have long believed that journalism provides merely a distillation of the facts. To truly grasp events that are occurring\, one needs to be on the ground and get a direct sense of the environment and the people. \nI have come back with several conclusions and had experiences that I would like share. \nI am planning a discussion with interested members of the Society to discuss what I saw and learned in my trip to Israel. \nThe discussion will be held on Thursday\, February 29th\, at 7:00 pm. It will be for members only\, in person\, and not via Zoom. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register with Maggie at mdetermann@nysec.org in advance. \nMany thanks for you interest. \nJoe Chuman

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Mattie Kahn: 'Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nGirls have been a driving force for change since the founding of this country\, and they have played crucial roles in almost every major protest movement in American history. I’ll address their unique contributions as well as their routine underestimation. How might we learn from girls? What progress might be possible if we did? \nAbout Mattie Kahn\nMattie Kahn is an award-winning writer and editor. Her work has been published in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Vogue\, Vox\, and more. She was the culture director at Glamour\, where she covered women’s issues and politics\, and a staff editor at Elle. Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America’s Revolutions is her first book. Visit her website at mattiekahn.com. \nAbout Young and Restless\nNine months before Rosa Parks kicked off the bus boycotts\, Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery\, Alabama. She was fifteen. In 1912\, women’s rights activists organized a massive march in support of women’s suffrage. Leading them up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan was not one of the mothers of the movement\, but a teenage Chinese immigrant named Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. Half a century before the better-known movements for workers’ rights began\, over 1\,500 girls—some as young as ten—walked out of factories in Lowell\, Massachusetts\, demanding safer working conditions and higher wages in one of the nation’s first-ever labor strikes. \nYoung women have been disenfranchised and discounted\, but the true retelling of major social movements in America reveals their might: they have ignited almost every single one. \nYoung and Restless recounts one of the most foundational and underappreciated forces in moments of American revolution: teenage girls. From the American Revolution itself to the Civil Rights Movement to nuclear disarmament protests and the women’s liberation movement\, through Black Lives Matter and school strikes for climate\, Mattie Kahn uncovers how girls have leveraged their unique strengths\, from fandom to intimate friendships\, to organize and lay serious political groundwork for movements that often sidelined them. Their stories illuminate how much we owe to girls throughout the generations\, what skills young women use to mobilize and find their voices\, and\, crucially\, what we can all stand to learn from them. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection\nNot on My Watch \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:The New York Virtuoso Singers: 'Composers Without Borders: The Ties That Bind Us - American\, Iranian\, Ukrainian\, Russian\, & Chinese Composers'
DESCRIPTION:The constitution’s preamble begins with the words “We the people\,” a term which over the centuries has taken on a life of its own. In the context of this concert by The New York Virtuoso Singers\, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us\, we focus on the unity of humankind\, not individual governments\, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. Our concert highlights the unending compositional creativity of humankind despite the complicated interrelationships of the countries represented. \nFrom Iryna Aleksiychuk\, composer of Gloria Patri: Music is a language that is understood by all people of the world. It does not require translation. Music just touches your heart – and you rejoice\, cry\, laugh or feel sad with it. It is wonderful that in our time\, when there is so much grief and violence in the World of People\, we can find refuge\, joy\, and peace in the World of Music. The task of the composer is to bring this light and peace to people\, so that they become better and kinder towards each other. And let the music speak\, but not the guns! \nTickets\nStudents 25 years and younger: $10\nGeneral: $20\nAt the Door: $25 \nClick here to purchase tickets online! \nProgram\nJoel Mandelbaum: Sea Surface Full of Clouds\nChen Yi: Spring Dreams\nAlfred Schnittke: Concerto for Choir\nRamin Amir Arjomand: Salve Regina\nIryna Aleksiychuk: Gloria Patri

SUMMARY:Piano Concert: Raj Bhimani
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance by pianist Raj Bhimani! \nProgram\n\nGermaine Tailleferre: Overture and Three Movements from the opera Il était un Petit Navire\nMaurice Ravel: Sonatine\nFrédéric Chopin: 24 Preludes\, Op. 28\n\nTickets\n$20 Students\, Seniors\, and Society Members • $25 Public • $30 at The Door \nClick Here to Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite! \nAbout Raj Bhimani\nPianist Raj Bhimani’s concerts are “virtuosic\, heartfelt and eloquent\,” writes New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman. Time Out NY noted him as being a “gifted and highly expressive pianist.” Performing regularly across North America and Europe\, he also makes frequent appearances in India\, where the nationally distributed newspaper The Hindu wrote\, “Raj Bhimani is a very sensitive piano player\, with a predilection for lyrical melody accompanied with rhythmic gracefulness.” In New York\, where he resides\, he appears often at The Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as well as at other venues. \nMr. Bhimani is a champion of new music and has developed a particular expertise in French piano literature. During his time studying in Paris he had the opportunity to meet composer Henri Dutilleux\, who declared him “a great artist who plays with sensitivity and intelligence.” In 2016\, to mark what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday\, Mr. Bhimani gave several performances of his works\, including the Preludes\, which Mr. Bhimani learned from handwritten manuscripts given to him by the composer before these works were published. \nAnother prominent French composer\, Thérèse Brenet\, has written several works especially for Mr. Bhimani. Two of Ms. Brenet’s compositions for Mr. Bhimani can be heard on a CD entitled “To the West Wind\,” on the Delatour label. A disc containing Schubert’s B-flat Sonata and Moments Musicaux was issued by Delatour in the same year. Two more works Ms. Brenet wrote for Mr. Bhimani were issued in 2014 on a disc entitled “Le Visionnaire\,” released by Musik Fabrik\, which has also released recordings of late solo works by Brahms as well as another disk dedicated to solo works by Ravel. All these recordings are available worldwide on numerous platforms. A recording dedicated to late sonatas of Schubert is in preparation\, and Mr. Bhimani is honored to be the first pianist invited to record previously-unpublished works by composer Germaine Tailleferre. This will be a multi-disk project. \nIn addition to solo recitals\, Mr. Bhimani also performs with Syrinx : XXII\, a group formed with musicians from Portugal. The trio performs regularly in the US\, Portugal\, and India\, and has premiered works written especially for them by composers in Portugal and Germany. \nFrequently sought after as a teacher and pedagogue\, Mr. Bhimani is known for guiding students from their first encounters with a piano up to concert level performances. His students have earned numerous prizes and have been heard in performance at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center\, and other esteemed venues in New York and across the United States. He writes articles on teaching and performance for Serenade Magazine\, is a frequent judge and lecturer on piano pedagogy\, and has served on the board of The Leschetizky Association\, an organization committed to upholding the great pedagogue’s ideals of beautiful tone production and musical integrity. Mr. Bhimani is grateful to his own teachers: John Steele Ritter\, Peter Hewitt\, Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer\, Claude Frank\, and Seymour Bernstein. \nFollow Mr. Bhimani’s activities at his website\, RajBhimani.com\, like his page on Facebook\, follow him on Instagram\, or subscribe to his channel on YouTube. \n(Photo by Jiyang Chen)

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Joe Chuman and Leonard Grob: The Israel-Hamas War and the Day After
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nI had an unusual opportunity last month to travel Israel to get sense of Israeli society in person and on the ground. I met with representatives of civil society to hear from them their response to their government\, the devastating war in Gaza\, and the efforts at mutual support in light of the massacre of October 7th. \nIn my presentation of March 17th I want to share what I saw and learned as well as relate the context for these very disturbing events. \nI will be joined by Professor Leonard Grob. Professor Grob is a Holocaust scholar. His research has led to a life long commitment to fostering peace between Israelis and Palestinians. He has done much work on site in the Middle East. In more recent decades\, Dr. Grob has served as president\, and now vice-president\, of Partners for a Progressive Israel\, which has become a significant actor in attempting to bring an end to the conflict. Our discussion will include thoughts on plans for long range peace after the current violence comes to an end. \nI hope you can join me for an important discussion. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection\nTBA \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sold Out! - John McDonagh Presents: 'Off The Meter'
DESCRIPTION:“He’s an unfailingly affable raconteur… It’s all fascinating stuff.” –The New Yorker \n“An absorbing portrait of a city and society in continual flux\, as told by someone who has lived through it\, Off the Meter\, on the Record makes for an extremely satisfying journey.”  —The Epoch Times \n“Uproarious and moving” –TheaterScene \n“Hilarious…It’s hard to think of anyone who could do justice to the New York cabby’s life better than John McDonagh.” –Theatre’s Leiter Side \n“It’s a gem!” –Curtain Up \n“Had Mark Twain driven a yellow cab instead of a riverboat\, his stories might’ve been like those of populist raconteur John McDonagh.” —Woman Around Town \nJoin us for a special performance of Off The Meter with playwright and actor John McDonagh! \nA comedic glimpse into 40 years behind the wheel of a New York City yellow taxi\, Off The Meter is a pithy social commentary from New York’s most recognizable cab driver about life spent behind the wheel. \nJohn McDonagh\, veteran radio host\, has condensed thirty-plus years of activism\, reality show antics and observation into a love song to the city that never sleeps. \nFrom the plight of the NYC homeless to the crazy demands of Upper East Side matrons\, McDonagh brings the audience from laughter to tears and back again faster than the apparition of umbrella dealers on a rainy day. Throw in his tales of brushes with the rich and famous\, and you have Irish storytelling at its best.
