We’re also thrilled to announce that we’ll be joined by the author herself for our discussion. \nThis profound novel describes a young Chilean writer recently relocated to New York for doctoral work who suffers a stroke\, leaving her blind and increasingly dependent. Lina Meruane explores our tenuous relationship with medicine and science as she confronts the often terrifying nature of the demands we make of those who love us. \nLina Meruane is an award-winning Chilean novelist. Her work\, written in Spanish\, has been translated into English\, Italian\, Portuguese\, German\, and French. She won Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nEvelyn’s presentation will focus on the disconnect between society and people facing mental health challenges\, and examine some of the experiences they have had with police. She’ll also explore one city’s successful mental health crisis system\, and an advocacy organization that still finds problems with the police who\, after their crisis intervention trainings (CITs)\, are still causing the unnecessary deaths of people experiencing mental health crises. \nThe presentation will highlight an organization that is now advocating for non-police response to all mental health crisis calls\, to more effectively and safely assist a person experiencing a mental health crisis. The presentation will end with a brief discussion of the National 988 number set to go into effect in 2022. \nEvelyn Graham-Nyaasi is a graduate of City College\, The Borough of Manhattan Community College and Howie T. Harp Advocacy Center. Currently\, she is studying Adolescent Education at St. John’s University Graduate School of Education. Evelyn works as an Advocacy Specialist at Community Access and is a member of Correct Crisis Intervention Today (CCITNYC) that advocates to replace police at mental health crisis calls with mental health peers and an Emergency Medical Technician. She was diagnosed with Bipolar Depression in 1990 and has had to navigate through a mental health system that can be difficult at times. DESCRIPTION:Speaking of Science returns on Zoom! The program will feature two twenty-minute talks followed by a Q&A. Society member Carol Portlock moderates. 4th Wednesdays. \nThis month’s speakers: \nBridgette Thom\, Ph.D. is a senior research specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Center\, where she conducts research relating to cancer survivorship. Specifically\, she addresses the financial impact of cancer and resultant disparities in treatment adherence and health/mental health services use\, and her work focuses on adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors. Her dissertation research assessed substance use disparities in sexual and gender minority youth. Dr. Thom received her BA from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and earned her MSW and PhD from the Columbia School of Social Work. \nStacie Corcoran\, RN\, MS\, AOCNS\, is the Nurse Leader for the Survivorship Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)\, where she manages multiple nurse practitioner-led clinics throughout the institution. She has presented nationally on survivorship models of care and long-term and late effects associated with cancer treatment. A graduate of William Paterson University and Columbia University\, Corcoran has spent her entire career in oncology nursing. DESCRIPTION:On February 7\, 1949\, renowned scholar and civil rights activist Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois gave a speech (the written version unearthed by our own Carolyn Parker) at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. We will be listening to a reading of this historic address as Dr. Du Bois speaks about the importance of acknowledging the hardships that African Americans have faced as well as their contributions to this country’s success. \nThis historic address is consistent with the resolution passed at the 2017 AEU Assembly titled “Toward Repairing the Harm of Racism.” There\, the AEU stated its goal of addressing racial inequality by examining the effects that racial discrimination has had and continue to have on people of color. Dr. Du Bois’ address echoes this sentiment\, a timeless reminder that we cannot create a better future without looking into the past. This event will take place virtually on Zoom on Sunday\, January 30th\, at 11am Eastern Time with Dennis D. Parker reading Dr. Du Bois’ speech. DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Film Focus at Ethical\, a new monthly series exploring ethical themes in classic and contemporary cinema. Watch the film on your own beforehand\, then join our guest presenter for an in-depth discussion. At this inaugural session\, Greg Berger will lead an examination of the award winning Korean film Parasite. \nParasite is currently available for streaming and/or rental on Hulu\, Apple Movies/iTunes\, YouTube\, Amazon\, Vudu\, Google Play\, and more. \nAbout this session \nFor over a century\, cinema has been an effective means to communicate pressing ethical and social dilemmas to mass audiences. Perhaps no contemporary film has been as effective at portraying social inequality as South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” (2019)\, winner of the 2020 Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. The film’s social message\, however\, extends far beyond its storyline. In Parasite\, Director Bong meticulously deploys visual metaphors within nearly every frame of his 132 minute film to characterize the dysfunctional relationship of the globe’s social classes. In images sometimes subtle and sometimes so transparent as to seem in-your-face\, Bong masterfully and beautifully communicates the toxic elements of global capitalism to his viewers. In this session\, we will review some of the political and cinematic traditions which have shaped the work of Bong Joon Ho\, and examine how he pointedly employs audiovisual language to drive home his social observations. \nDr. Gregory Berger is a filmmaker\, comedian\, Mexican television personality\, and Professor in the School of Humanities and Education at the Tecnológico de Monterrey\, Cuernavaca campus\, and a Research Fellow at the UAEM University in the Mexican State of Morelos. In Mexico he is known for his popular comedy journalism project “El Joe T. Hodo Show” which has been a fixture on social media since 2013. Since 2019 he has been a correspondent for the nationally broadcast comedy journalism television shows “El Almohadazo” and “Capital por Cual.” He has also produced comics for “El Chamuco\,” known as the “MAD Magazine of Mexico.” Berger’s academic research\, focusing on the intimate relationship between social movements and cinema\, has been published in numerous academic anthologies from Routledge Press and Peter Lang. SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas In: Public Art with Rose DeSiano (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, sculptor\, and photographer Rose DeSiano joins us to explore the ethical dilemmas raised by works of public art. Public Art is a service to the community\, but questions arise from aspects of its planning\, placement\, purpose\, and relevance. \nWhat is its role as a method of activism\, bringing topics of social importance to the surface? How can the physical artwork become a conduit for community concerns? Who makes the decision on what art will be installed\, and do the decision-makers represent the local residents? Can it be used to fundraise for non-profit social service organizations? \nRose DeSiano brings together photography and sculpture into a public art practice. Her artwork examines cultural symbolism\, the collective consciousness\, and is interested in bringing to the surface lost or undiscussed topics of history. Using art in public spaces to foster community\, DeSiano sees public art as an act of advocacy and activism. \nCommissioned by multiple cities\, her photo-sculptures have appeared throughout New York City (most recently in Prospect Park)\, in San Diego\, and Cleveland\, and have received multiple awards\, including the Uniqlo Parks Grant and FLOW.17 Public Art Award. Her gallery artwork has been exhibited in solo shows in the US and Europe\, featured in several group museum exhibitions; Bronx Art Museum\, Allentown Museum of Art\, Heritage Museum of Málaga\, and has been included in international art fairs; Photoville\, FOTOFOCUS\, and Orange Changsha Photo\, China. She is also currently the 2021 Artist in Residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. \nHer work appears in numerous publications including; Hyperallergic\, Vogue\, Time Out\, ArtNews\, and UK’s Aesthetica. DeSiano has her MFA from Art Center\, LA\, her BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. She currently lives in NYC and is a Professor of Art at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. On February 2\, Punxsutawney Phil\, the celebrity groundhog from the Pennsylvania town of the same name\, will have been enticed out of his den to read the future for 2022. Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow\, Dr. Rost will reflect on what to do when the pandemic seems unending\, when each day looks like the one before and you’re stuck in a rut. The 1993 movie “Groundhog Day” will be liberally referenced. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts.
