Our goal is to help our neighbors and fulfill our longstanding mission to “build listening relationships to develop responsive programs that alleviate the symptoms of systemic injustice to promote a more compassionate city.” \nThis Sunday Platform will share the high points of the Ethical Society’s 140-plus years of social service since our founding by Dr. Felix Adler\, an inheritance of ethical action we aim to carry forward. While the great powers are antagonizing each other once again\, can’t we build a culture of peace? \nDr. Richard L. Koral has been a Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture since 2017. Richard holds degrees from New York University and New York Law School\, and a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith pastoral counseling from the Hebrew Union College. He is the Leader Consultant to the Social Service Board and numerous committees in the Society. Active with the American Ethical Union\, Richard served on its Board as president from 2012 to 2015. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly series exploring current discoveries and debates in science. \nJane Disney\, Ph.D. received a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Genetics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Washington State University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental Health at MDI Biological Laboratory. In addition\, she directs the activities of the Community Environmental Health Laboratory. She is the co-developer of the citizen science online data portal\, Anecdata.org. \nSince 2000\, she has worked with multiple community partners\, identifying\, and helping to remedy threats to public health and the clean waters on and around Mount Desert Island\, including bacterial pollution at local swim beaches and red tide blooms in Frenchman Bay. It will examine in depth the general state of religiosity within the black community especially. I’ll also be touching on the push back these secular groups receive from both “more traditional” atheist organizations and from the religious people of color. \nKevon Cameron is an atheist\, humanist\, activist\, and organizer. Originally born in Jamaica\, his family moved to New York when he was barely 4 years old. Though he was raised by traditional\, “old school” parents who became more religious over time\, he was never convinced that there is a higher power. \nFor 4 and a half years he was the lead organizer for Black Nonbelievers of NYC. Recently he and several other former organizers have combined their efforts to create The Black Secular Collective.
