SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Sexual Ethics with El/yse Ambrose\, Ph.D. (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This week’s session will be held online only. \nJoin us for this special Ethics Unplugged with our special guest\, Dr. El/yse Ambrose\, a Queer sexual ethicist who will join us to discuss how we can all navigate the pleasures of sex with integrity and joy. \nFeaturing music by Lindsey Wilson! \n\nEl/yse Ambrose\, Ph.D. (they/them)* is a blackqueer ethicist\, creative\, and educator whose research\, art\, and teaching lie at the intersections of race\, sexuality\, gender\, and spirituality/religion. Ambrose’s forthcoming book\, A Living Archive: Embodying a Blackqueer Ethics (T&T Clark [London]\, Enquiries in Embodiment\, Sexuality\, and Social Ethics series) offers a construction of a communal-based ethics of sexuality and grounded in blackqueer archive. Their artistic work-in-progress\, mycountryboy|what do i know\, is a photo-sonic study of Ambrose’s paternal roots that addresses themes of place\, opacities\, monstrosity\, and religion. \nAmbrose’s most recent completed photo-sonic exhibition\, “Spirit in the Dark Body: Black Queer Expressions of the Im/material\,” premiered in November 2019 during the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion at the L Street Fine Arts Gallery (San Diego\, CA) and has shown at the House of Mark West (Bronx\, NY)— one of the few black queer-owned galleries in the country.  Ambrose currently serves as Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Black Study at the University of California\, Riverside. Their research has been supported by the Louisville Institute for the Study of American Religion\, the Forum for Theological Exploration\, Columbia University’s Center on African American Religion\, Sexual Politics\, and Social Justice\, the Henry Luce Foundation\, the Yale University LGBT Studies Fellowship\, Auburn Seminary and CrossCurrents Journal. \nAmbrose’s work and commentary have been featured in the Huffington Post\, the Christian Century and their podcast Contemplating Now\, Medium\, ForHarriet.com\, Vice\, and CBC Radio One’s Tapestry.  Ambrose’s research interests include black religion\, religious ethics\, religion and social change\, queer and trans studies in religion\, Africana spiritual traditions of the U.S. South\, and blackqueer cultural history and production. Elyse Ambrose resides in Southern California. They are a proud plant sibling and parakeet parent. \nMay’s Theme: Pro-Pleasure Activism \nThis month at Ethics Unplugged we’ll be focusing on embodied pleasure. Often\, it’s easy for folx engaged in social justice activism to get caught up in the pursuit of justice and forget to appreciate what it means to be embodied\, and the pleasure we can find in our flesh and bones. \nWe’ll explore some of the more radical ways our bodies can delight us\, and the power of physical pleasure in the many forms in which its revealed to us as embodied beings. As always\, we will bring the hermeneutics of ethics to these conversations\, remembering that there is an ethical practice in even the most radical spaces\, and in the most revolutionary acts of pleasure. \nWatch Online! Click to Join at Start | Zoom ID 864 8703 7420 \nIn-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimagining of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Come early for wine and snacks! \nFree and open to the public!\nCOVID-19 Notice: Masks are optional but strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Parental Rights or Property Rights? You Decide. (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nMuch has been made of newly back in vogue “parental rights” movement that is enjoying popularity in states such as Florida\, Arkansas\, and South Dakota. This shows up as anti-trans legislation\, rolling back protections in child labor laws\, and avowing that hungry children are not the concern of the state but a result of bad parenting. How should we ethically respond? \nGovernor Ron DeSantis Signs Historic Bill to Protect Parental Rights in Education (flgov.com) \nChildren Are Not Property (nymag.com) (Full disclosure and not just to name-drop\, this op-ed was written by non other than Sarah Jones\, ace reporter and wife of our own Ed Beck. For extra credit\, read this vitriolic response by the Post: NY Mag op-ed blasting parental rights movement sparks fury (nypost.com)) \nFree and open to the public!\nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Masks are optional but strongly encouraged. \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 861 1417 5760 | Passcode 347145

SUMMARY:Saving Afghans\, One Girl at a Time: Interview with Meg Chapman and Sr. Catherine Patten
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nFor our platform on May 21\, Leader Joe Chuman will be interviewing Meg Chapman\, Member and former President of the Society\, on a program she is leading to bring five imperiled Afghan girls to safety in New York. The girls\, who are musicians\, artists\, and aspiring scientists\, fled Kabul when their schools were closed and destroyed by the Taliban. Meg will be joined by Sister Catherine Patten\, R.S.H.M.\, Ph.D.\, a trustee of Marymount Manhattan College who is working to create placements for the girls in schools in New York City. \nThe girls currently reside in Pakistan\, where their situation is unstable\, and seek to come to the United States so that they can continue their education. They would like to complete high school and college\, both of which are forbidden for girls in current day Afghanistan. \nMeg has long been involved in supporting Afghan children\, including since the takeover in August 2022. Her focus has been on women and girls who have been oppressed and are endangered. Meg will begin by examining the situation women currently face in Afghanistan\, and then turn to the specifics of this rescue effort. \nWe’re pleased to work with Meg on this important initiative that has brought together educators and others\, and this Platform will launch the Ethical Society’s active support in this life saving effort. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination required. Masks optional but strongly encouraged. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection: Planned Parenthood Action Fund \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. DESCRIPTION:“[A] smart\, fluent drama…Mr. Pearle has found an intriguing subject of real currency\, and one that stirs our natural sympathy.” —The New York Times\n\n“A KID LIKE JAKE is a searching\, keenly perceptive look at how the nature-versus-nurture question can play out on the front lines of tolerance today.” —Time Out New York \n“Daniel Pearle’s polished new dramedy…is full of perceptive details about the intense world of affluent parenting\, where every child is gifted and the struggle for dominance begins at home.” —New York Magazine \n*** \nOur long-running staged reading and talkback series continues on May 21 and 22nd with two performances of Daniel Pearle’s A Kid Like Jake directed by Katrin Hilbe: \nAlex and Greg are facing their child’s big test: admission to kindergarten. SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: John Roberts and The Supremes (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nRecent news reports reveal that some of the justices on the United States Supreme Court have been engaging in highly unethical behavior in regards to relationships (both financial and personal) with wealthy people who have business with the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts has declined a request to meet with a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on ethics reform for SCOTUS. Allegedly\, justices “self-govern” to ensure that ethical standards are kept. But is this actually true? Should SCOTUS have an enforceable code of ethics? Who should create it? SUMMARY:Philip Lindsay: 'Citizens’ Assemblies: Possibilities and Challenges'
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nCitizens assemblies represent one pathway towards a more collaborative form of democracy that puts everyday people at the center of governing. Three qualities make them stand out: the use of random selection to create a representative sample of the public\, the space and time for deep deliberation\, and an emphasis that policy recommendations be tied to actual decision-making power. Such lotteries were a core feature of decision making in ancient Athens. And contemporary assemblies have tackled controversial and complex issues\, from climate change in France to abortion and same-sex marriage in Ireland. \nFrom Germany to Colombia\, Japan to Chile\, such assemblies are on the rise at all levels of government. In Bolivia\, schools have demonstrated the benefits of using lottery to inspire civic duty and participatory culture in student government. And NYC experimented with deliberative committees as part of its citywide Participatory Budgeting in 2023. \nPhilip Lindsay just returned from a brief tour of three major European cities which have integrated permanent assemblies into their local government (Milan\, Brussels and Paris). Join us to discuss the possibilities and limits of these assemblies. How might they contribute to the protection and “revitalization” of democracy? \nPhilip Lindsay grew up in Philadelphia and lives in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. He leads the Democracy Innovation Hub (DIH) at the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College. In July of 2022\, the Hub hosted “Citizens’ Assemblies: A Workshop to Revitalize Democracy\,” which brought together over 50 public servants\, elected officials\, and community advocates. This led to the implementation of three deliberative budgeting processes in NYC government in 2023. Philip also co-taught the course “Democratic Innovation and Citizen Lotteries: from Ancient Athens to the French Climate Assembly.” The Hub also hosted the “Doing Democracy Differently Teacher Fellowship” which trains high school teachers on how to bring deliberative democracy into the classroom. \nPresider: Sarah Sprott \nMonthly Collection: Planned Parenthood Action Fund \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Ethical Theater: Narrative Medicine Short Plays with Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE special theatrical presentation by students from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University! \nTwelve first-year medical students will be presenting 10-minute plays they developed in their Narrative Medicine elective course taught by narrative medicine faculty playwright Catherine Rogers\, MFA\, MS and guest lecturer theatre director Avra Sidiropoulou\, PhD. \nIn this class\, students explore ethics and empathy through the eyes of the characters they create. For students\, creating characters for their plays helps them step into the shoes of others\, as they will be expected to step into the shoes of their future patients. They also learn the skills of teamwork while responding to and acting in each other’s plays. \nRSVPs kindly requested. Click here to register on Eventbrite! \nFor more information about our own monthly Ethics and the Theater series of staged readings and talkbacks\, please visit our calendar.

SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Embodied Movement with Sexologist Tyomi Morgan (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This week’s session is online only. \nJoin Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimagining of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. \nThis week’s guest is sexologist\, pleasure coach\, and intimacy coordinator Tyomi Morgan: \n\nMy name is Tyomi and I am a certified Sexologist\, Pleasure Coach\, Movement specialist and ASSASSIN Trainer.\n\nI began my journey with movement in high school when I joined a dance club called Orchesis\, and it changed my life forever. I was an introvert with a body that appeared to be much more mature than my age\, and I often felt shame around it. Dance taught me to be proud of my body and to use it to express myself through art. I gained confidence\, learned how to move through life shamelessly\, and connected with my sensuality forever.\n\nI am passionate about movement\, and I understand what it’s like to feel disconnected from your body. Taking control of your pleasure is rooted in your ability to feel into your body and to trust it in motion.\n\n\nJune’s Theme: Wild and Holy Embodiment\, Pt. II \nAs we head into our final month of our Ethics Unplugged experiment we will continue to focus on embodied pleasure. The conversations through May have been deeply personal\, theoretical\, and just down right juicy! We couldn’t cover all the topics we wanted to\, so we’re extending the theme. Living ethically is always an embodied experience\, but sometimes we Ethical Humanists tend to get stuck in our head and forget we even have a body! \nThis month we’ll explore embodied movement\, talk about sex in our elder years\, and explore how rest can be resistance. As always\, we will bring the hermeneutics of ethics to these conversations\, remembering there is an ethical practice in the most radical spaces to engage the most revolutionary acts of pleasure. \nThe first three weeks will be Zoom webinars only\, to accommodate our guest speakers\, but join us live and in person on June 22nd to celebrate the wrap-up of a great experiment! People who attend in person will be given a special gift to help you love and appreciate your beautiful\, strong\, tender\, capable bodies! \n\nWatch Online! Click to Join at Start | Zoom ID 864 8703 7420 \nFree and open to the public!
