DESCRIPTION:Admittedly the relevance of my talk will depend on the results of the November 3rd elections. If the results are favorable\, my address\, I hope\, will be relevant to our immediate future. If not\, it will speak to a time beyond a far off horizon. The founder of Ethical Culture\,Felix Adler\, believed that ethics should guide and inspire our lives. He also believed that his philosophy laid out a blueprint\, so to speak\, as to how society should be organized. Though I respectfully dissent from the how Dr. Adler technically grounded his philosophy\, as a metaphor I believe it is of striking relevance when we ponder the type of society we want America to be. His ethical vision was profoundly democratic\, and it is democratic values that we need to restore. \nI sense that there is a moral awakening in America\, and if things go our way\, then I am hopeful that we will embark on a new beginning and Americans will dedicate themselves to rebuilding our society\, a society very much in need of repair. We may also find that Ethical Culture has something important as the direction we need to go. \nDr. Joe Chuman has been the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, NJ since 1974\, and a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture since 2008. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. It sheds light on the increasingly relevant topic of growing up multiracial in America.The Girl in the Yellow Poncho is the story of a black and white American child growing up in Los Angeles and coming of age in the 1980s and 1990s. As a young woman finding her way among mostly white students at UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz\, she is a biracial black feminist longing for the white father who abandoned her\, while grappling with the worldviews of her mother and grandmother—and later\, struggling to find her place as a light-skinned journalist covering controversial issues involving racial injustice and women. \nKristal Brent Zook\, Ph.D. is an author\, award-winning journalist\, and professor of journalism at Hofstra University on Long Island. She is a former contributing writer for the Washington Post and Essence magazine and has written for dozens of print and broadcast outlets over the past 25 years\, including the New York Times Sunday Magazine\, NPR\, the Nation\, the Guardian\, and most recently\, The New Yorker. DESCRIPTION:One of the most enduring ideas in economics is that unemployment is both unavoidable and necessary for the smooth functioning of the economy. This assumption has provided cover for the devastating social and economic costs of job insecurity. It is also false. \nIn this presentation\, Pavlina R. Tcherneva challenges us to imagine a world where the phantom of unemployment is banished and anyone who seeks decent\, living-wage work can find it -guaranteed. This is the aim of the Job Guarantee proposal: to provide a voluntary employment opportunity in public service to anyone who needs it. Tcherneva enumerates the many advantages of the Job Guarantee over the status quo and proposes a blueprint for its implementation within the wider context of the need for a Green New Deal. \nPavlina R. Tcherneva\, Ph.D.\, is an Associate Professor of Economics at Bard College and a Research Scholar at the Levy Economics Institute\, NY. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy.
