DESCRIPTION:Join our Sunday Platform on July 11 at 11:00am to learn about issues facing Asian Americans\, the recent shootings and hate crimes this past year under COVID\, and what to do – for themselves and their families. I strategically share my personal story and review the law and tie in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion messages and micro-aggressions within the very specific Asian experience. While focused on Asians and South Asians\, it will be a program that all diverse people can find illuminating. \nAbout Glenn: \nFor over 30 years\, Glenn D. Magpantay has been a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ and AAPI communities. He is a long-time civil rights attorney\, professor\, and LGBTQ rights activist. \nGlenn worked on hate crimes at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). He lobbied for successful passage of the federal Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and Hate Crimes Act\, which President Obama signed into law in 2009. He knows the law and its limitations very well. He co-founded and most recently served as the Executive Director of the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA). \nFor the past few weeks\, he has been supporting the community. He has counseled students\, lawyers\, staff of service agencies\, attorneys at the U.S. Department of Justice. He met with District Attorney prosecutors and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "The Humanity of Others"
DESCRIPTION:The title of my address may sound trite\, but it actually of the greatest consequence. As a professor of human rights\, I read continually about the dark underside of human behavior. Human rights inevitably causes those concerned with their protection to acquaint oneself with the human capacity for cruelty. Genocide\, torture\, massive rape\, and other forms of mass atrocity leave it difficult to retain a sunny view of human nature. My work as a human rights activist has placed me in face to face conversation victims of the most brutal torture. \nOften such cruelty is carried out against people who are different from the perpetrator by virtue of race\, gender\, religion\, sexual orientation\, or more broadly\, culture. Xenophobia is too often a component of the most vicious abuses. \nBut before a person can brutalize or annihilate another human being\, he must first convince himself that his victim is not human\, or at most\, a human being of a lesser order. To kill it is first necessary to dehumanize. \nIndeed\, given human history such oppressions as slavery or the disenfranchisement of women as full citizens was justified by tconcluding that such persons were not complete human beings. Often the capacity for abstract reasoning was the criterion employed to legitimate one’s complete humanity. Those in power\, namely white males possessed it\, minorities and women\, not enough. Hence the institutions of slavery and patriarchy\, as well as various forms of brutality were justified. \nThe question of what makes for a human being who is thereby in possession of fundamental rights ensuring her or his dignity\, protection from violation\, and equal participation in society is an issue of great consequence. It is an issue I will explore in my address. \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. DESCRIPTION:This is the last of our 4-month series developed in collaboration with the American Slavery Project to grow racial justice through responsive youth dialogue. Participants will receive certificates of completion. Today’s is an all-in-one program with a 15-minute break in between. \n********** \nEthical NYC is partnering with American Slavery Project to grow racial justice through responsive youth dialogue. Youth are invited to a four-month series of programs\, featuring virtual productions of American Slavery Project’s REVERBERATION plays\, with follow up workshops based on ASP’s responsive youth curriculum. (Is that right? “responsive youth curriculum”?) \nOnce a month\, from March through May\, youth will engage in a Wednesday “Watch-n-Chat” session” followed with a Sunday “Dialogue-n-Deed” workshop with expert guidance to support deep inquiry. The series culminates with a JUNETEENTH gathering that combines the watch-’n’-chat and workshop sessions into a singular grand finale (note that the June finale is an all-in-one Saturday event). Youth participants will be treated as Racial Justice Scholars of Ethical Youth Programming and will be given a certificate of completion for full participation in the four-month program. DESCRIPTION:Join The American Slavery Project for the finale of The Reverberation Plays\, a five-part audio drama series with soundscapes and minimal visuals that dramatize how Black History isn’t an event\, it’s a legacy. Each premiere is accompanied by a scholar-led conversation illuminating the themes of each play. All events will be streamed with a live talkback following the show. \nThe Reverberation Series is made possible by grants from The Black Seed as well as Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and Creative Communities\, made possible by NY Dept. of Cultural Affairs\, New York State Council on the Arts and distributed by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. #Reverberations \nJune 18: “Second Sight” by Judy Tate \nA brother and sister in rural Illinois reconnect after many years.
