DESCRIPTION:This feminist proletarian novel tells the story of the friendship between two working-class wives\, Ellen and Sally. Set in the rural country and the industrial cities of Sweden during the 1920s\, the book follows the parallel development of Ellen and Sally. In the 70s\, Jack Birnbaum and Larry Allison took on leadership\, endeavoring to developing a camp culture that was more unstructured and free-spirited. Under this dynamic duo\, the camp provided a fertile environment for political and social discussions\, inspiring many to become activists. Judith Heumann\, Bobbi Linn\, and other Jenedians in fact formed the Disabled in Action advocacy group in 1970\, part of the grassroots beginning that led to the 1990 passage of the American Disabilities Act. \nThe documentary\, set at the camp in 1971\, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and a nomination for an Academy Award as Best Documentary Feature soon followed. Written\, directed\, and co-produced by Nicole Newnham and James LeBrecht\, the film’s executive producers were Barack and Michelle Obama\, under their Higher Ground Productions banner. \nWatch the film on Netflix on your own before joining the discussion. If so\, what are the justifications? \nThese discussions of Ethical Culture beliefs and practices explore the history\, ideals\, and current interests of the Ethical Society community and our place in the philosophical/ religious firmament. Leaders Dr. Richard Koral and Dr. Joe Chuman alternate. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527 \nAbout Leader Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. \nDuring his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. \nCurrently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time.
