SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: Owls Do Cry by Janet Frame (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:This 1957 novel is Daphne’s song of survival but also the author’s: Frame was herself misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and scheduled for brain surgery. She was famously saved only when she won New Zealand’s premier fiction prize. The book confronts life in mental institutions and is equally valuable for its poetry\, its incisive satire\, and its acute social observations. A sensitively rendered portrait of childhood and adolescence and a testament to the power of imagination. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater Encore: The Model Apartment by Donald Margulies
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running play reading and discussion series continues with The Model Apartment: \nLola and Max escaped to America from the Holocaust\, and now they have escaped to Florida from Brooklyn and their troubled daughter. But their haven for the night is a mirage: a model apartment where the appliances are for show only and ashtrays are glued down. Hilariously and horrifyingly\, it is gradually revealed that their escapes are equally illusory\, as they carry with them all they hoped to have fled. \nPerformed by Kersti Bryan\, Patricia Bruder Debrovner\, Charles E. Gerber\, Trevor Latez Hayes\, and Bonnie Bean. Directed by Susan Horowitz. \nAfter the play\, member Betsy Ungar will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Member Patricia Bruder Debrovner produces. \nRSVP REQUIRED – Click here to RSVP on Eventbrite \nSuggested Donation: Members $5\, Guests $10 (at door) \nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and mask are required to attend.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "A Meditation on Kindness"
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online! \nThese are times when we are vexed\, rather assaulted\, by multiple challenges coming from the wider world: Climate destruction\, democracy destruction and the flourishing of irrationality that is literally mind-boggling. Ethical Culture has been historically committed to taking on the larger issues in each era in which it has found itself. Perhaps what is sometimes lost is that Ethical Culture is no less committed to the private lives of individuals and the more intimate sphere of social relations. \nI contend that in these times\, when feelings are often made raw and barbed by the fears and challenges that impinge on us\, that being able to nurture kindness in the smaller sectors of life is vitally important. \nI plan to dedicate my address to the cultivation of kindness and why we should not overlook this essential value which more than most reveals our humanity. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served since 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. This coalition of religious and human rights organizations provides services for asylum seekers released from federal detention. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. All others are invited to join us via Zoom. With flu season approaching\, if you feel unwell please stay safe\, stay home\, and join us remotely! \nPresider: Dan Hanson \nShared Charity: Hope for Haiti \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series w/ Leader Joe Chuman: "The Biomedical Empire: Lessons Learned From the COVID-19 Pandemic" with Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the Puffin Cultural Forum have announced the Puffin Interview Series with our own Leader Dr. Joe Chuman! \nOn the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format\, all streamed live on Youtube. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \nUpcoming Livestreams: \nSunday\, December 5 • 4:00pm\nDr. Barbara Katz Rothman\, author of The Biomedical Empire: Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic\n\nMore Interviews TBA!\nAbout Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman and The Biomedical Empire \nJust released by Stanford University Press\, Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman’s Biomedical Empire: Lessons Learned from the Covid-19 Pandemic expounds on the dangers of the “medical industrial complex.” Dr. Katz Rothman shows that biomedicine has the key elements of an imperial power: economic leverage\, the faith of its citizens\, and governmental rule. She investigates the Western colonial underpinnings of the empire and its rapid intrusion into everyday life\, focusing on the realms of birth and death. This provides her with a powerful vantage point from which to critically examine the current moment\, when the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the power structures of the empire in unprecedented ways while sparking the most visible resistance it has ever seen. Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman is a professor of Sociology at the City University of New York. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals. Joe currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. \nWatch Live Here!

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: "It Takes a Village"

During the short winter days\, when it appeared the sun might just fade away and not come back\, humans would gather around campfires and tell stories to banish their fears of a never-ending night. We’ve always innately known that we function best when we see ourselves as part of a larger community and understand how our lives\, joined together with others\, enrich us as individuals and enlarge our capacity for social change. Join us during these short days and long nights\, as we explore the importance of our connections to each other\, to all living things\, and to the great community of Mother Earth. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (Online)

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul: "Reading for Truth and Affirmation"
DESCRIPTION:Who writes a story matters. Texts are not neutral. The racial identities of creators impact the stories they create. Sonja describes two essential factors that guided her writing in Stamped (For Kids)\, and they are critical for young readers. She addresses the importance of young people having access to books where they’re able to read for truth—the both painful and celebratory history of the United States. And she provides insights on the importance of young people accessing books where they’re able to read for affirmation—where the humanity of people\, specifically those who have been oppressed\, is affirmed. \nDR. SONJA CHERRY-PAUL is the New York Times best-selling author of Stamped (For Kids). She is an educator\, author\, and the co-founder of the Institute for Racial Equity in Literacy. Sonja is the Director of Diversity and Equity at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University and the host of The Black Creators Series. She develops curricula that centers the work of racial literacy and culturally-relevant teaching in K-12 schools. Sonja leads presentations at educational conferences and works with educators around the world\, providing professional development on antiracist reading and writing instruction. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated members of the public are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nShared Charity: Women for Afghan Women \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "I Am Spiritual but Not Religious. What on Earth Does That Mean?"
DESCRIPTION:It is now found that almost 25 percent of Americans now are unaffiliated with a religion. For younger generations\, this number climbs to at least 30 percent. This means that\, if the so-called “nones” were a denomination\, they would comprise the largest in the the United States\, more numerous than Catholics or evangelicals. \nIt is assumed that of this cohort about ten percent are atheists and agnostics. If so\, the majority are either religiously totally indifferent or proclaim some free-lance belief\, hence “spiritual but not religious.” \nBut what could this possibly mean? I hope to provide a possible answer – which is also a personal confession. \nDr. – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nShared Charity: Women for Afghan Women \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Fair Share Giving Luncheon (Members Only/In-Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the kick-off of the 2022 season with the annual Fair Share Giving Lasagna Plus Luncheon. Leaders Richard Koral and Nori Rost will give a platform talk about the Society and will celebrate the activism and participation of its members and friends. A lasagna luncheon will be accompanied by music and reflections by your fellow Society members on their connection to the Society and to you\, the membership community. We will remember and celebrate our members for their long-standing commitments and look towards the coming year. \nSociety Members Only — In-Person Only – No Zoom \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
