SUMMARY:Barbara Allan: Doing Our Time on the Outside (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nBarbara Allan will share firsthand knowledge as she addresses our community on the devastating effects incarceration has on families. She will delve into how families and the community at large are the collateral damage of the carceral system. \nEthical NYC Food Drive: Please bring a can of protein–tuna\, chicken\, beans\, etc.–a jar of nut butter\, or box of pasta to Platform to support our Food Insecurity Initiative. Spices and cooking oils are requested as well\, as they are not covered by SNAP and the price of cooking oil has skyrocketed.  \nBarbara Allan was a schoolteacher\, wife and mother who had no contact with the criminal justice system until 1966 when her husband was imprisoned. As she tried to deal with her feelings of isolation and confusion\, she became aware of a new organization\, The Fortune Society\, whose goal was to disseminate information about a failing prison system. In a letter she wrote to Fortune\, she said that she was doing time on the outside. That was the beginning of Barbara’s advocacy. \nBarbara\, along with two other women\, formed Prison Families Anonymous\, an organization that provides support and advocacy for loved ones impacted by the juvenile or criminal justice system. A source of pride for Barbara was the work she did to institute contact visits in her state. She served on the board of directors of New Yorker’s Against the Death Penalty; was on the advisory board of a maximum-security prison for women; a victims advocate of the Lauderhill Police Department; volunteered at Women’s in distress\, a domestic violence agency. \nCurrently she is on the board of directors of 3 criminal justice agencies\, including on that is International. Barbara has been published in the congressional record\, written her memoir\, “Doing Our Time on the Outside: One prison family of over 2.5 million” and advised on the publication of the folio edition “All I ever wanted…Stories of the Children of the Incarcerated.” She has appeared in two documentaries and is currently working on Houses on the Moon to help bring stories of the Prison Family to the stage. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above.\n \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nMonthly Collection: Camp Linden \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter\, Stories 1-4 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:From familiar fairy tales and legends Angela Carter created an absorbing collection of dark\, sensual\, fantastic stories. When she died in 1992 her reputation instantly went from cultish to canonical. Margaret Atwood said: “She was a quirky\, original\, and baroque stylist\, a trait especially marked in The Bloody Chamber – her vocabulary a mix of finely tuned phrase\, luscious adjective\, witty aphorism\, and hearty\, up-theirs vulgarity.” \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:SSB Film Screening: Mothers of Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Ethical NYC Social Service Board. \nMany parents find it hard to imagine being away from a child for a week. Now\, imagine being separated for 10 or 20 years. Mothers of Bedford explores the effects of a long-term prison sentence on the mother-child relationship: \nFilmmaker Jenifer McShane spent four years following five incarcerated mothers at the New York maximum-security penitentiary\, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility She interviewed them\, their children and other family members\, the children’s caregivers\, and prison employees and volunteers. \nEighty percent of women in US prisons today are mothers of school-age children. McShane’s documentary depicts the stresses that prison places on a family while also painting a beautiful picture of the power of a mother’s unconditional love as they take parenting classes\, enroll in in-prison education\, phone in for parent-teacher conferences\, spend time with their kids at the prison’s Children’s Center. We see the struggles and joys these women face as prisoners and mothers. \nFollowing the film\, the Social Service Board’s Bonnie Bean and Marlene Williamson will lead a discussion about the effects of incarceration on parents and children. \nVisit our website to learn more about the Social Service Board\, including their Televisiting Program that helps children maintain contact with an incarcerated family member. While not a replacement for in-person visits\, the program provides another option for families to help alleviate children’s separation trauma. \nPremiere screening on Wednesday\, April 20 at 5:00pm. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required to attend. \nWatch the trailer for Mothers of Bedford:

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Robert Godfried: An Equitable AmeriCorps Could Tackle the Biggest Problems Facing Our Nation (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nNational service has the potential to bring Americans together to tackle the competing crises of an ongoing pandemic\, a worsening climate crisis\, and increasing economic inequality. AmeriCorps\, the nation’s largest national service program\, does work of tremendous importance in our communities —but problems remain around who is able to serve in the program. AmeriCorps must embrace a new vision that centers equity and accessibility to ensure that all who want to serve are able to serve. \nRobert Godfried is a policy fellow at Next100\, a think tank focused on empowering those with lived experience to impact policy in that area. Robert’s work focuses on increasing equity and inclusion in AmeriCorps and the new Civilian Climate Corps. He draws on his experience in tenant organizing as an AmeriCorps member to inform his work advocating for better public service opportunities. He has previously worked as a field organizer for Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 presidential campaign\, and as an associate at a progressive political digital marketing firm. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Columbia University. \n“Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great\, because greatness is determined by service.” ―Martin Luther King Jr. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Leader Nori Rost \nMonthly Collection: Sunrise NYC \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:AEU Salon on Peace and Climate (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Russian invasion of Ukraine has elicited a broad range of responses from a broad range of perspectives. \nHere are three from Ethical Culture: \n• We must respond to the human suffering caused by war with concrete actions. \n• Violence is never justified. \n• We must not be complicit in supporting the root causes of war. \nJoin us for a discussion of these ideas in the classic Ethical Culture approach to differing priorities–a passionate yet friendly\, discussion among colleagues. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: 'The Cave' by José Saramago (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The struggle of the individual against bureaucracy and anonymity is one of the great subjects of modern literature\, and Saramago is often matched with Kafka as one of its premier exponents. But this comparison doesn’t convey the warmth and human dimension of many of his novels. Those qualities are particularly evident in this brilliant allegory\, which links the sterility of modern life to the parable of Plato’s cave. \nIt took Saramago’s consummate skills to convert this ancient parable into a novel with impact\, hope and charm. \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella.
