SUMMARY:Book Launch: "How to Live a Good Life: A Guide to Choosing Your Personal Philosophy"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of HOW TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE with editors Skye Cleary\, Massimo Pigliucci\, and Daniel Kaufman\, along with contributor and Ethical NYC Leader Emerita Anne Klaeysen. \n\n\n“Philosophy professors Pigliucci\, Cleary\, and Kaufman deliver on their goal of providing a ‘glimpse of how the world looks through [the] respective lenses’ of 15 major philosophies in this anthology featuring an impressive array of contributors. . . . Readers interested in thinking more about their life-choices and options for change will be grateful for this practical guide to\, as the authors write in their conclusion\, the ‘possibilities to learn from\, ponder\, and perhaps adopt.’” —Publishers Weekly \n“Philosophies and religions are sometimes more than just dogmas or points to be argued. They can also be daily practices which help you in the most difficult moments of your life. This book explores some of the greatest ethical paths humans have walked\, including both ancient\, modern\, and non-western routes to wisdom. Highly recommended.”  —Jules Evans\, author of Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations  \n“Everyone will have something to learn from this book\, whether you are seeking guidance on living a good life\, or have already dedicated yourself to a school or tradition. Secular humanists can learn about Daoism\, Progressive Muslims can learn about Existentialism\, Confucians can learn about Ancient Greek wisdom. Those looking to seek an examined life and those looking to learn about how other coherent systems of values work will find this book illuminating. With accessible storytelling as well as scholarly rigor\, the editors have put together a truly inclusive edition that covers the central tenets of living well bestowed on us by the most prominent traditions in moral philosophy and religion.”  —Barry Lam\, creator of Hi-Phi Nation and associate professor of philosophy at Vassar College \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT HOW TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE\nA collection of essays by fifteen philosophers presenting a thoughtful\, introductory guide to choosing a philosophy for living an examined and meaningful life. A VINTAGE ORIGINAL \nSocrates famously said “the unexamined life is not worth living\,” but what does it mean to truly live philosophically? \nThis thought-provoking\, wide-ranging collection brings together essays by fifteen leading philosophers reflecting on what it means to live according to a philosophy of life. From Eastern philosophies (Daoism\, Confucianism\, and Buddhism) and classical Western philosophies (such as Aristotelianism and Stoicism)\, to the four major religions\, as well as contemporary philosophies (such as existentialism and effective altruism)\, each contributor offers a lively\, personal account of how they find meaning in the practice of their chosen philosophical tradition. \nTogether\, the pieces in How to Live a Good Life provide not only a beginner’s guide to choosing a life philosophy but also a timely portrait of what it means to live an examined life in the twenty-first century. \n\n\n\nFor more information about the book\, visit:\nhttps://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/604070/how-to-live-a-good-life-by-edited-and-with-an-introduction-by-massimo-pigliucci-skye-cleary-daniel-kaufman/

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion Group: Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
DESCRIPTION:Thirty years since its original publication\, Ceremony remains one of the most profound and moving works of Native American literature\, a novel that is itself a ceremony of healing\, masterfully written. Tayo\, a World War II veteran of mixed ancestry\, returns to the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. He is deeply scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese and further wounded by the rejection he encounters from his people. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. \nRead the novella in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you! Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nMonthly\, 1st Wednesday\nMembers Free\, Guests $5

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "Erich Fromm: The Thinker Who Inspired Me Most and His Relevance for Today"
DESCRIPTION:Last September marked the 50th year since I started my career as a professional Ethical Culture leader\, in fact\, right here at the New York Society. Many personal streams brought me to humanism and Ethical Culture\, but I want to focus on one thinker without whose influence I would not have made my to our movement. That figure is the humanist and social psychologist Erich Fromm\, whose thought I discovered at 16 and at a critical time in my life. \nFromm spoke to both my personal needs and to the state of the world\, including the emergence of fascism and the dehumanizing aspects of corporate capitalism\, in ways that remain relevant. \nMore personal than most addresses\, I look forward to sharing aspects of Fromm’s social philosophy and how he helped shape my life and thought. \nShared Charity: Bergen Sanctuary Coalition \nPresider: Kathleen O’Connell \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. SUMMARY:Stoa Nova - The Open Door Policy: The Stoics on Suicide
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is an obviously delicate topic\, and one — for instance — about which Stoics and Epicureans disagreed vehemently. Let’s take a look at what the Stoics think about taking one’s life\, under what circumstances it is permissible\, and what should your friends do to dissuade or assist you. \nSuggested reading: https://howtobeastoic.wordpress.com/2016/04/05/epictetus-on-suicide-the-open-door-policy/ \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome. SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas In: Aging - "If I'd Only Known" w/ End of Life Specialist Liz Singer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with end of life specialist and Ethical NYC President Liz Singer! \nWhy choose the title “If I’d Only Known” for this talk? Easy question. In the 10 years that I have been practicing as a geriatric care manager and coordinator\, it is the phrase I most often hear. Planning for what is needed as one ages and as one faces the end of life — whether for oneself or for a loved one — can be overwhelming. There are so many decisions to make! Decisions in the areas of financial\, legal\, medical\, personal\, social\, emotional…the list goes on and on. And these ethical decisions are fraught with ethical dilemmas. \n\nWhat does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds — medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, etc. — who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields. Monthly\, 3rd Wednesdays.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Happy Hour for Humanity
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: Unfortunately this month’s HH4H is cancelled. Please join us on February 28! \nMany of us are young professionals working full-time jobs\, some are starting and caring for families\, and we’re all living in what seems to be a state of survival trying to make it here in the tri-state area–but we’re not alone! Although we lead busy lives\, we know it’s important to engage with others in our community to support\, motivate\, and challenge each other to be our best ethical selves. \nOnce a month\, let’s unite and make some time to meet over refreshments to discuss current ethical issues around the globe as well as ones we’re facing locally. Through current events\, short articles\, TED Talks\, and personal narratives\, let’s break out of our daily routines to make a toast to humanity together. \nMonthly\, fourth Friday. Free for members\, $5 for guests!
