DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nJoin a conversation about what the U.S. Constitution means today. As we celebrate the nation’s 250th Anniversary\, let’s take a look at the document that formed this new government. \nOur conversation is guided thanks to a video the League of Women Voters produced featuring Heidi Schreck\, award winning playwright of “What the Constitution Means to Me” and law professor Ally Coll\, CUNY Law School. Heidi and Ally ask students about what the Constitution means to them\, and our group will pick up on that conversation. No prep required. Through dialogue and action\, we defend democracy together. Total time: 60 minutes. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\n>>> RSVP to Join on Zoom Here \nAbout Barbara Ettington\, Board Director\nBarbara is proud of the League’s non-partisan history and enjoys working to ensure today’s League remains relevant. Barb began volunteering for the League in 2014\, joined in 2015\, and served as Chair of Voter Services from 2016-2019. In addition to serving as a Board Director since July 2020\, she sits on the Board’s Budget & Finance Committee. Barb also produced several fundraising events for the League while serving on the Development Committee\, and has helped on various projects such as updating “What Makes NYC Run?” Barb enjoys serving where needed. \nAbout Stacey Lesser\, Vice President of Communications\nStacey joined the LWVNYC in 2022\, and initially became an active member of the Development Committee. She was asked to take on responsibility for the League newsletter the following year – a natural fit given that her engagement with the League followed her retirement from a career in Advertising where she served as Chief Strategic Officer at a number of large NYC agencies. As VP Communications she seeks to ensure the activities of the Chapter receive as wide an audience as possible\, and is working to create the balance between maintaining the appreciation for the long-standing values and tenets of the LWV and the evolving voice of the organization. She is a native New Yorker and a long time resident of Tribeca. She has a long history of involvement in political issues and is bringing that experience and passion to bear in her new role. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Winder reaches over 300K+ people across social platforms\, film\, and public speaking. But what happens when we stop building it? \nAcross America\, many of the places where people once learned to work together—neighborhood associations\, civic organizations\, congregations\, clubs\, volunteer groups\, and local institutions—have weakened or disappeared. As civic engagement declines\, so too does something less easily measured: our sense that we can shape the future together. We become more isolated\, more distrustful\, and increasingly spectators to forces that seem beyond our control. \nThe Undiscovered Country explores the relationship between civic life and hope\, and asks what happens when a society loses the habits and institutions that teach people how to participate in something larger than themselves. At a moment when many of our old assumptions about community\, democracy\, and social stability are being tested\, we are entering genuinely uncharted territory.\nBut an undiscovered country is not necessarily a place to fear. It is also a place we have not yet built.
