SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. The novel explores how seemingly insignificant things shape people’s behavior and lives. The novel also delves into the lingering effects of casteism in India. It won the Booker Prize in 1997. \nRoy is a leading political activist and environmentalist. Articles and incendiary essays from her hand can be found in The Guardian\, Democracy Now! and many other publications. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Panel Discussion: 'Mothers of Bedford\,' Decarceration\, and Women Dignity
DESCRIPTION:As incarceration rates for men drop in some states\, efforts to de-carcerate jails and prisons have largely left women behind\, and women have become the fastest-growing segment of the incarcerated population. At the same time\, it’s women who are leading the charge to right these wrongs.\n\nJoin the New York Society For Ethical Culture\, The Social Justice Network\, and the National Action Network for a film screening and panel discussion to explore this important topic.\nThis event will host a screening of the acclaimed documentary Mothers of Bedford\, which highlights the challenges of women\, families\, and the impact of the criminal justice system in the lives of women here in the United States. Minerva Pascual of the Social Justice Network will give an introduction. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring: \n\nShawanaa Vaughn\, Founder of Silent Cry\nHope Sanders\, Formerly Incarcerated Citizen\, College and Communities Valedictorian\nJudy Clark\, Community Justice Advocate\, Hour Children\nJustice Kathleen Waterman-Marshall\, State Supreme Court Justice\nModerated by activist\, podcast host\, and member of Social Justice Network Dorian Bess.\n\nFollowing the panel discussion and Q&A\, awards will be presented to these women for their work\, including a Lifetime Achievement Award to Judy Clark. A call to action will be given by Claudette Robertson\, and closing remarks will be given by Derek Perkinson of the National Action Network. \nRSVP Required: Click Here to RSVP on Eventbrite!\nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required to attend.\n \nAbout Mothers of Bedford: \nFilmmaker Jenifer McShane spent four years following five incarcerated mothers at the New York maximum-security penitentiary\, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility She interviewed them\, their children and other family members\, the children’s caregivers\, and prison employees and volunteers. \nEighty percent of women in US prisons today are mothers of school-age children. McShane’s documentary depicts the stresses that prison places on a family while also painting a beautiful picture of the power of a mother’s unconditional love as they take parenting classes\, enroll in in-prison education\, phone in for parent-teacher conferences\, spend time with their kids at the prison’s Children’s Center. We see the struggles and joys these women face as prisoners and mothers. \nVisit our website to learn more about the Social Service Board\, including their Televisiting Program that helps children maintain contact with an incarcerated family member. The program provides a supplemental option for families to help alleviate children’s separation trauma. \nWatch the trailer for Mothers of Bedford:

SUMMARY:Stephanie McGraw: From Dirt to Destiny
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online! \nFrom Dirt to Destiny is about my struggles as a woman of color growing up in poverty\, growing up in lack with poor education\, no sense of direction\, no goals\, my failures and my successes. \nWhat my journey has proven to show me is it doesn’t matter how far down you go\, there is always a light or something bright that can guide us out\, and that light found me and guided me out. \nThis week also features a performance by special musical guest Keith Anthony Fluitt! \nStephanie McGraw grew up in New York City Housing Authority projects and experienced abuse as a child and intimate partner violence as an adult. Surviving 30 years of abusive relationships and a resulting stay in a domestic violence shelter\, there came a time in her life where there was a growing\, burning desire to help victims journey from devastation to safety and independence. \nLeaving the domestic violence shelter and growing out of her pain\, Stephanie returned to her Harlem roots\, where there was no one talking about real life issues related to domestic violence. As a result\, she gave birth to WARM – We All Really Matter (a 501c non-profit organization) in 2010 to increase community awareness about domestic violence\, and to empower victims to help themselves. \nWhile what Stephanie does radiates from an internal fire rather than external recognition\, she is grateful and further strengthened by the multiple recognitions about her work from NYC elected officials\, community organizations\, NYPD\, newspapers\, TV stations\, and hospitals; as well as from the New York State Senate and the United Nations. \nAbout Keith Anthony Fluitt \nKeith Anthony Fluitt\, a New York City born and rasied singer\, has worked with many great artists of our time including Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. Keith also sings lead vocals. \nHe went to Alvin Aliey Dance Shool\, graduated from talent unlimited program at Julia Richmond High School (graduating with: Lisa Lisa\, Gene Anthony Ray from Fame\, Brenda K. Starr\, and a host of others). Keith has performed with many great stars including but not limited to: Patti LaBelle\, Martha Wash\, Will Downing\, Ashford & Simpson\, Lala Brooks\, Quincy Jones\, amd Michael Jackson. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion - 'Doña Bárbara' by Rómulo Gallegos
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Click here to view the upcoming schedule. \nThis week: \nDoña Bárbara tells the tale of an epic struggle between two cousins for a vast estate and ranch in the Venezuelan llano\, or prairie. Doña Bárbara\, a mysteriously and powerfully beautiful woman\, is consumed with hatred for all men. When her cousin Santos Luzardo\, bred on the plains but educated in the city\, returns to reclaim his land and cattle\, their battle becomes one of violence\, magic\, and seduction. Rómulo Gallegos’s vivid prose brings the world of Doña Bárbara to life\, and blends fantasy\, adventure\, and romance. \nPublished in 1929 and all but forgotten by anglophone readers\, Doña Bárbara is one of the first examples of magical realism\, laying the groundwork for later authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.
