DESCRIPTION:Join us on a hike to Bull’s Hill in historic Cold Spring\, NY. \nThis 4.5-hour hike will take us to a summit over the Hudson River. You will be rewarded with stunning views of the river and\, on a clear day\, Manhattan. We will take a scenic train ride to the town of Cold Spring. The town\, set on the east bank of Hudson\, has many antique stores\, nice coffee shops\, several restaurants\, and a lovely small park on the riverfront. This town is worth a day’s visit even if you do not hike! \nThe ride on Metro North Hudson line takes an hour and twenty minutes and offers spectacular views of the river. TRAVEL INFO: Meet at the information booth at Grand Central at 8:30 am. If you arrive after that time\, find us on the train that leaves at 8:45am (Hudson Line). The round trip ticket is $30 ($20 for seniors). Please buy your own tickets. Bring a water bottle\, light lunch and/or snack for the trail\, and a few dollars for a coffee stop at a local cafe. Carolyn\, the Deskovic Foundation for Justice\, and her team of lawyers are now hoping that the Westchester DA will permit her to go back to court to prove her innocence using DNA testing recently approved but unavailable at the time.  David will ask her about new evidence and go over some of the questionable aspects of her trials\, including the media environment\, back in the early 1990s. \nFeaturing music from Music on the Inside! \nCarolyn Warmus is a former Westchester school teacher convicted of murder in 1992. After serving 26 years in prison\, she was paroled two years ago. The Westchester DA has recently approved the use of DNA evidence in re-examining her case. \nDavid Rothenberg is a producer\, director\, author\, activist\, and the founder of The Fortune Society. He was inspired to start Fortune after producing a play called Fortune and Men’s Eyes which revealed the horrors of life in prison. Over the past 50 Years\, Fortune has become one of the nation’s leading reentry service organizations\, serving nearly 7\,000 individuals annually\, with a wide range of holistic services to meet their needs. It has secured a position as a leading advocate in the fight for criminal justice reform and alternatives to incarceration. David has hosted a weekly radio program on WBAI for nearly 50 years. DESCRIPTION:In his work\, Twilight of the Self: The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism\, political theorist Michael J. Thompson argues that modern societies are witnessing a decline in one of the core building blocks of modernity: the autonomous self. \nFar from being an illusion of the Enlightenment\, Thompson contends that the individual is a defining feature of the project to build a modern democratic culture and polity. One of the central reasons for its demise in recent decades has been the emergence of what he calls the “cybernetic society\,” a cohesive totalization of the social logics of the institutional spheres of economy\, culture and polity. These logics have been progressively defined by the imperatives of economic growth and technical-administrative management of labor and consumption\, routinizing patterns of life\, practices\, and consciousness throughout the culture. Evolving out of the neoliberal transformation of economy and society since the 1980s\, the cybernetic society has transformed how that the individual is articulated in contemporary society. Thompson examines the various pathologies of the self and consciousness that result from this form of socialization—such as hyper-reification\, alienated moral cognition\, false consciousness\, and the withered ego—in new ways to demonstrate the extent of deformation of modern selfhood. Since that time\, the gallery has participated in numerous art fairs including the Outsider Art Fair\, Armory Show\, Frieze\, Art Forum Berlin\, FIAC\, Independent\, Art Brussels and Art Basel Miami Beach. In 2010\, Andrew Edlin’s satellite company\, Wide Open Arts\, acquired the Outsider Art Fair and has been its sole owner since that time. \nAbout the Exhibit: \nThe truth is that if it hadn’t been for Paul Edlin (1931 – 2008)\, this gallery never would have existed. When I first saw his postage stamp art in 1996 at Gordon College in Massachusetts I was deeply moved by the shimmering effect the room full of mosaic collages had on me. At the age of 65\, it was Uncle Paul’s first solo show. I knew he’d been making art for years but I didn’t realize that for the last 15 years he had been almost exclusively using stamps to compose his paintings. He chose the stamps from many nations for colors and visual texture. He sliced them into tiny pieces\, which he used like mosaic tiles\, gluing them on museum board until his compositions were finalized. His scenes of people and mythological figures\, animals and objects suggest a mystical personal cosmology. His 16 x 20 inch collages could take as long as three months to complete\, and he worked diligently every day\, alone in his one-room New York apartment. \nUncle Paul’s art is\, in a way\, the soul of this gallery. The topic? How to survive The Event: the societal catastrophe they know is coming. Rushkoff came to understand that these men were under the influence of The Mindset: a Silicon Valley-style certainty that they can break the laws of physics\, economics\, and morality to escape a disaster of their own making—with enough money and the right technology. \nRushkoff will share how we can transcend the landscape the Mindset created—a world alive with algorithms and intelligences actively rewarding our most selfish tendencies—and rediscover community\, mutual aid\, and human interdependency. Instead of changing the people\, we can change the program. \nRushkoff will also be signing his new book\, Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires\, immediately following the program. \nDouglas Rushkoff is rofessor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at Queens/CUNY\, and an author and documentarian who studies human autonomy in a digital age. Named one of the world’s ten most influential intellectuals by MIT\, his twenty books include the upcoming Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires\, as well as the recent Team Human\, based on his podcast\, and the bestsellers Present Shock\, Throwing Rocks and the Google Bus\, Program or Be Programmed\, Life Inc\, and Media Virus. He also made the PBS Frontline documentaries Generation Like\, The Persuaders\, and Merchants of Cool. His book Coercion won the Marshall McLuhan Award\, and the Media Ecology Association honored him with the first Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity.
