SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Mick Metal on the History of Tattooing and Body Marking
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimagining of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Come early for wine and refreshments! \nTonight we will be joined by guest speaker Mick Metal. Mick began in 2003 as a body piecer at Stiehl’s Body Modification and came to work at Shotsie’s Tattoo? in 2004 and went through his apprenticeship. Mick was Shotsie Gorman’s last apprentice. He left to buy a tattoo shop in Guttenberg\, NJ and then sold it to open Revolution Tattoo Co. in Pearl River\, NY. In 2014 he and a few other tattooists fought against unjust ink laws that were put into law with out NY tattoo artists knowledge and ultimately had the laws reacted and rewritten and approved by then Governor Cuomo. As an advocate for tattooing he is as of 2021 a Board Member of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists and continues to fight for the rights of tattoo artists everywhere. Mick is available Wednesdays through Saturdays. \nApril Theme: Stories Our Bodies Tell \nThis month we will be exploring the stories our bodies tell through choice and chance. For many of us tattoos are an important way to tell the stories of our lives. For some\, scars derived from accidents or surgeries have equally profound stories to share. Join us as we explore these mediums of life. \nGet a tattoo or piercing at Ethical! We’ll be joined by partner artists at our Thursday\, April 27 Unplug Yourself session who will discuss and practice their art. \nWatch Online! DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nThis week: During the pandemic\, many businesses shifted to working from home as a necessity. Does work actually get done? This is another topic suggested by Elinore. I welcome suggestions for LRT topics. \nReport: As US Economy Grapples with Nearly 11 Million Unfilled Jobs\, Immigration Reform is Critical (abc27.com) \n5 reasons employees don’t want to return to the office | Envoy \nOpinion | Meta. SUMMARY:AEU All-Society Platform: Our Climate Future with Our Children's Trust
DESCRIPTION:Watch online and at our meeting house in-person watch party! \nWe are thrilled to announce that our next All-Societies Platform with special guests from Our Children’s Trust is taking place on April 30th! This is a great opportunity to meet the lawyer and some of the youth plaintiffs in the upcoming lawsuit  Held v. State of Montana\, the first ever constitutional and children’s climate trial in U.S. history- which will begin on June 12th in Helena\, Montana. On March 13\, 2020\, 16 young people from across the state of Montana filed their constitutional climate lawsuit against the state\, asserting that by supporting a fossil fuel driven energy system\, which is contributing to the climate crisis\, Montana is violating their constitutional rights to a clean and healthful environment\, to seek safety\, health and happiness\, and to individual dignity and equal protection of the law. They also argue that the state’s fossil fuel energy system is degrading and depleting Montana’s constitutionally protected public trust resources\, including the atmosphere\, rivers and lakes\, fish and wildlife \nThis is a unique opportunity for Ethical Culture families to explore together how to empower our youngsters to speak up and speak out\, and to show them a path forward that is empowering and grounded in our beliefs. Click on the link below to RSVP for what will be an amazing event. We hope to see you there. \nRead more about “the greening of state constitutions” at the Brennan Center. \nAbout Our Children’s Trust\nOur Children’s Trust (OCT) is a non-profit\, public-interest law firm that provides campaign-based\, legal services to youth from diverse backgrounds to secure their legal rights to a safe climate. SUMMARY:Howard Yaruss: Understandable Economics (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online! \nAlthough many economists may be reluctant to admit it\, economics is not a scientific discipline which requires expert knowledge and specialized tools. Like psychology\, economics is a social science\, an attempt to understand human interactions and how they affect the world around us. It focuses on those relationships as they relate to money and the things money buys. In order to tease out some precision regarding those relationships\, economists use data and mathematical tools. But the fundamental relationships can become apparent to anyone willing to observe the world carefully and apply their own common sense. The goal of this talk is to help participants do just that. \nHoward Yaruss will discuss our economy and his new book\, Understandable Economics (Prometheus Books\, 2022)\, which breaks down our economic system in a straightforward way\, avoiding jargon\, formulas\, graphs\, and other technical material so common in books on this subject. In particular\, he will discuss some common economic myths regarding money and business and show how they can easily be demystified. For example\, he will discuss misunderstandings many people have about cryptocurrencies\, economic growth\, the national debt\, the tax system\, the Fed\, and inflation. \nRead the Kirkus review of Howard’s “impressively clear presentation that should prove useful to those looking for a one-stop primer.” \nThere will be ample time for questions and the author looks forward to a spirited conversation. Free and open to the public! \nClick here to RSVP to attend in-person \nClick here to RSVP to watch on Zoom \nHoward Yaruss is an economist\, professor\, attorney\, businessman\, and activist who greatly enjoys explaining complex issues in a clear\, interesting and accessible way. He has taught a variety of economics and business courses and currently teaches at New York University. Previously\, he served as General Counsel of Radian Group\, one of the largest guarantors of debt in the world. He has also served on the Boards of organizations that advocate for safer streets\, help the homeless and support the arts. He lives on the Upper West Side and serves on our local community board.
