SUMMARY:AEU All-Societies Sunday Platform: Gathering Light in Our Times (Online Only)
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nJoin Ethical Culturists from around the country as we acknowledge the dark and bring out the light. Let’s bring out the best of others and thus ourselves through this heart-centered winter solstice program of many voices. \nHosted by Hugh Taft-Morales\, Ethical Culture Leader \nCall for Submissions: How Have You Navigated This Season and Times Like This? \nWe are seeking twelve Ethical Culturists to share their short story (up to 90 seconds) in response to any of these prompts: \n\nWhat gifts have darkness and light brought to your life?\nHow has darkness nourished you toward a moment of light?\nTell us about an incident\, person\, or moment in your life that recently brought you hope or joy?\n\nWe are seeking experiences from your life that you are willing to share with our national movement — a brief\, evocative description or illustration rather than an intellectual explanation. \nFor example: “Last month I visited my aunt who was distraught over the fact that her cat had gone missing….  Her cat\, named Willow\, was a great comfort to her…. As I was getting ready to leave\, the doorbell rang and when we opened it a neighborhood girl was holding Willow. The smile on my aunt’s face brightened my day.” \nYour story can be more descriptive so that it fits our 90-second format. Hugh is happy to work with all those offering a story if they wish advice or coaching and a rehearsal. \nEmail Hugh with your story or for submission support → \nRSVP to Join Online\nClick Here to Register on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nGMHC \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Anne Klaeysen: Revisiting 'Justice January' Seven Years Later
DESCRIPTION:Society Leader Emerita Dr. Anne Klaeysen returns on Sunday to explore the developments of the last seven years and what justice means moving forward after the election: \nSeven years ago\, when I was clergy leader at the New York Society\, I gave a platform address called Justice January. This January the same person who was then president will be returning to the White House\, so I am returning to this topic. \nAs I noted then\, justice is “an idea that has taken center stage in ethics\, philosophy\, religion\, law\, and politics for millennia.” I asked\, “What distinguishes justice from other moral and political ideas?” Now I wonder whether justice in this country has become so politicized as to be meaningless. \nWhat does it mean when we say that Ethical Culture has a social justice mission? Explore with me ways to fulfill that mission. \nAbout Anne Klaeysen\nDr. Anne Klaeysen is Leader Emerita of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. She is also co-chair of The Encampment for Citizenship Board. Anne holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in pastoral care and counseling from Hebrew Union College\, as well as masters’ degrees in business administration and German. She and her husband\, Glenn Newman\, were married and raised their children at the Brooklyn Society\, where Anne currently serves as vice president. \nJoin Online\nRSVP Here to Join on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nCamp Linden \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. At a later point\, Ms. Tillinghast headed state operations out of Jackson\, MS\, subsequent to which she handled regional administrative work at SNCC headquarters in Atlanta\, GA. Government interference and reaction to a published recommendation for a 2-state solution on the issue of Palestine brought about the collapse of the organization. \nSince that time\, Muriel Tillinghast has pioneered in domestic violence abuse\, worked at River’s Island and the Brooklyn House of Detention\, built St. Margaret’s House for Trinity Church\, aborted scientific experimentation on a child\, worked in reviving landlord abandoned housing\, tried to save a church and worked in a community garden. She spends a great deal of time doing historical research as is a recognized autodidact in Black and American History. She and her cat live in Brooklyn\, NY. \n“Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows\, the censure of their colleagues\, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change.” -Robert F.
