SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Leader Joe Chuman: Stitching Together the American Fabric (Online)
DESCRIPTION:As we are all aware\, American society is ominously divided by ethnicity\, race\, and more recently\, political orientation and positions on specific issues. A new tribalism characterizes the American experience. \nBut the American fabric is divided socially as well. Fewer people associate in groups and clubs. The institutional life of America is growing thinner. This includes families. A result is growing isolation and an epidemic of loneliness. \nIn my address of April 12th\, I’ll be looking at some of the causes for this fraying of American society and how we can begin to rebuild the American fabric. \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Stoa Nova: Should We Believe in a Stoic God? (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The ancient Stoics were pantheists\, they believed that the cosmos is a living organism endowed with reason\, which they called God. Some modern Stoics insist that if we abandon that sort of belief\, then the Stoic ethical system will irremediably suffer. In particular\, the Stoic notion of Providence will become untenable\, and with it the idea that we should not just endure\, but embrace our fate. What do you think? \nSuggested readings: https://thesideview.co/articles/the-stoic-god-is-untenable-in-the-light-of-modern-science/ \nhttps://thesideview.co/articles/again-modern-science-does-not-support-the-stoic-god-and-thats-okay/ \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome. SUMMARY:Proactive Meditation and Deep Listening (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In this experiential session\, we allow our breath and physical support to help us sense how we really are in each moment\, taking time to listen deeply and empathically for what might be calling for our attention and is more than a fleeting distraction. This focused approach to meditating can allow stuck places to soften\, leading to fresh paths of connection. \nLed by Society Member Larry Hurst. \n*** \nEvery weekday at 2:00 pm\, Ethical Culture will offer a live broadcast and gathering. It may be a meditation session\, a book reading circle\, shared poetry\, a study group or a class run by one of our Leaders\, Joe Chuman or Richard Koral. \n  \nClick here to join at start time – Meeting ID 384-422-5692 \nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time.
