SUMMARY:The Joy of Being Generous: NYSEC’s Food Insecurity Initiative During COVID
DESCRIPTION:In late October of 2020\, NYSEC members Janet and Howard Rose began a food insecurity initiative. Acting on behalf of the Ethical Action Committee and honoring the Ethical Culture tenet of deed\, it was a simple concept that grew enormously\, building by building\, to ultimately a collection of over five tons of food. Join Janet and Howard as they share this incredible journey. Learn about all of the participants – from the volunteers who organized their buildings\, to the managers who ran months long drives. Share the enthusiasm of students who set up a pantry in their East Harlem high school and finally\, the food pantry organizations who received the desperately needed donations. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click here to join at start time | ID 824 8529 0494 \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nShared Charity: TBA \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O’Brien (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This 1939 novel tells the story of a college student who lives with his curmudgeonly uncle in Dublin. When not in bed or reading\, he is composing a novel about a second-rate author\, Trellis\, whose characters ultimately rebel against him. Figures of Irish myth make Trellis pay for his bad writing. Hilariously funny and inventive\, this is a masterpiece of Irish literature\, included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor complete access information\, including Meeting ID\, please see this week’s Ethical Weekly email or contact Gunther.\n \nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. Zoom is available for tablets and smartphones in both main app stores\, Apple and Google Android. Attendees don’t need to register for a Zoom account although it’s free and helpful. To join a meeting\, simply click the event’s invitation link above.
