DESCRIPTION:In this platform\, we will explore\, through songs and words\, the dynamics between gender and oppression\, gender violence\, as well as the meaning and social significance of how we perceive ourselves to be. Each November 20\, people around the world commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance\, a day to memorialize all the people who had been murdered in the previous 12 months due to their perceived gender identity. Currently\, there are already over 300 folx murdered because of their gender expression. It is more important than ever to critically reflect on the role of gender in our society. \nAbout Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:Let’s walk around Governor’s Island and learn something about its 400-year colonial history and present uses. We’ll meet at Ethical at 9:30 and ride the #1 train to South Ferry. (Or you could meet us near the #1 exit on the Staten Island Ferry Plaza. Just let us know.) We’ll walk a few feet to the (extraordinary) Battery Maritime Building\, buy our $3 round trip tickets and ride the ferry 800 yards to the island. There will probably be little or no food available there in November; so after an estimated two-hour visit we’ll ferry back to Manhattan for lunch. \nNOTE: The 9:30 departure time is based on the October Ferry schedule. The November schedule will not be announced until November 1\, and it may require a modification to our departure time.
