We’ve always innately known that we function best when we see ourselves as part of a larger community and understand how our lives\, joined together with others\, enrich us as individuals and enlarge our capacity for social change. Join us during these short days and long nights\, as we explore the importance of our connections to each other\, to all living things\, and to the great community of Mother Earth. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. She investigates the Western colonial underpinnings of the empire and its rapid intrusion into everyday life\, focusing on the realms of birth and death. This provides her with a powerful vantage point from which to critically examine the current moment\, when the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the power structures of the empire in unprecedented ways while sparking the most visible resistance it has ever seen. Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman is a professor of Sociology at the City University of New York. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals.
