SUMMARY:Intergenerational Winter Festival: "Winter Wonder" (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intergenerational celebration and exploration of the gifts of darkness and light\, featuring art\, song\, poetry\, and dance! We will gather as a community for the first time since March to celebrate the season of change and reflect on these challenging times. \nThe holidays and the arrival of the winter season will elicit some nostalgia for a more normal time and yet remind us that we are a loving\, resourceful\, and resilient community that comes together in times of joy and sadness and uncertainty. \nFeaturing a special performance by choreographer/dancer Jody Sperling and Time Lapse Dance! \n“American Elm” (excerpt\, from Arboreal Entanglement)\nChoreographed and performed by Jody Sperling\nMusic by Matthew Burtner\nCostume Construction: Mary Jo Mecca\nTextile Artist: Gina Nagy Burns \n\nA NYC-based dancer-choreographer\, Jody Sperling is the Artistic Director of Time Lapse Dance. She has created more than 45 works and is the leading exponent of the style of early performance technologist Loïe Fuller (1862-1928). Sperling has expanded Fuller’s genre into the 21st century\, deploying it in the context of contemporary and environmental performance forms. Sperling earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature film “The Dancer” and was commissioned to create new work featured in a forthcoming Fuller documentary. In 2014\, Sperling participated in a polar science mission—as the first choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker—and danced on Arctic sea ice. Since then much of her work has focused on engaging with climate change. Currently\, Sperling is developing a dance practice called ecokinetics that cultivates the relationship between the moving body and ecological systems while providing strategies for climate-engaged artmaking. \n\n**Please note that this Sunday’s program begins at 11:30.** \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. All others are invited to join us via Zoom. With flu season approaching\, if you feel unwell please stay safe\, stay home\, and join us remotely! \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresiders: Leaders Dr. Nori Rost and Richard Koral; Youth Programs Coordinator Audrey Kindred \nShared Charity: Hope for Haiti \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.
