SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: "Seeing Red" with Author Lina Meruane (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This week’s discussion is about Seeing Red by Lina Meruane. We’re also thrilled to announce that we’ll be joined by the author herself for our discussion. \nThis profound novel describes a young Chilean writer recently relocated to New York for doctoral work who suffers a stroke\, leaving her blind and increasingly dependent. Lina Meruane explores our tenuous relationship with medicine and science as she confronts the often terrifying nature of the demands we make of those who love us. \nLina Meruane is an award-winning Chilean novelist. Her work\, written in Spanish\, has been translated into English\, Italian\, Portuguese\, German\, and French. She won Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Professor Meruane’s doctoral work was a New York University\, where she teaches Latin American literature and culture. \nIf you have a question for Lina\, please submit it to Gunther and he’ll create a queue of questioners. \nAbout GLD: Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: Cost of Living by Martyna Majok (Online)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Out of an abundance of caution\, this month’s two sessions of Ethics and the Theater have moved entirely online via Zoom. We hope to return to in-person readings and discussions as soon as possible. \n********** \nOur long-running staged reading and discussion series continues with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Cost of Living by Martyna Majok: \nTruck driver Eddie struggles to reconnect with his estranged and partially paralyzed wife\, Ani. Jess\, overeducated and underemployed\, takes a job assisting John\, a graduate student with cerebral palsy and an only partly merited sense of entitlement. In her unsentimental\, blackly funny Pulitzer Prize-winning play\, Martyna Majok unspools the stories of these mismatched pairs in parallel\, until their paths dramatically and poignantly\, intersect. \nPerformed by Mary Theresa Archbold\, Daniel Damiano\, Christopher Imbrosciano\, and Valerie Terranova. Directed by Kathy Gail MacGowan. \nAfter the play\, member Betsy Ungar will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Member Patricia Bruder Debrovner produces.
